Effects of Local Weather Variation on Water-column Stratification and Hypoxia in the Western, Sandusky, and Central Basins of Lake Erie

    Get PDF
Hypoxia, low dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations (<2 mg/L), has been a major issue in Lake Erie for decades. While much emphasis has been placed on biological factors, particularly algal blooms, contributing to hypolimnetic oxygen depletion, there has been little focus on the role of weather. For this study, we monitored water temperature and DO concentrations at sites in the western, central, and Sandusky basins in Lake Erie during June and July 2010–2012. We then compared trends in stratification and DO concentrations to weather patterns during that period. We found that during those three years, there was significant variation in weather patterns, particularly decreased ice coverage and increased storm events in 2012. These weather patterns corresponded to 2012 having the warmest water temperatures, some of the lowest DO concentrations, and a deeper and thinner hypolimnion (especially in the central basin) than the previous years. We found a relationship between weather and hypoxia, providing further evidence for why these basins are susceptible to low DO conditions during summer months. The role of weather in hypoxia is another indication that the lake is vulnerable to effects of climate change and should be considered in management strategies

Wavelet multiscale analysis for hedge funds: scaling and strategies

    Get PDF
The wide acceptance of Hedge Funds by Institutional Investors and Pension Funds has led to an explosive growth in assets under management. These investors are drawn to Hedge Funds due to the seemingly low correlation with traditional investments and the attractive returns. The correlations and market risk (the Beta in the Capital Asset Pricing Model) of Hedge Funds are generally calculated using monthly returns data, which may produce misleading results as Hedge Funds often hold illiquid exchange-traded securities or difficult to price over-the- counter securities. In this paper, the Maximum Overlap Discrete Wavelet Transform (MODWT) is applied to measure the scaling properties of Hedge Fund correlation and market risk with respect to the S&P 500. It is found that the level of correlation and market risk varies greatly according to the strategy studied and the time scale examined. Finally, the effects of scaling properties on the risk profile of a portfolio made up of Hedge Funds is studied using correlation matrices calculated over different time horizons

Theoretical and Experimental Studies of Schottky Diodes That Use Aligned Arrays of Single Walled Carbon Nanotubes

We present theoretical and experimental studies of Schottky diodes that use aligned arrays of single walled carbon nanotubes. A simple physical model, taking into account the basic physics of current rectification, can adequately describe the single-tube and array devices. We show that for as grown array diodes, the rectification ratio, defined by the maximum-to-minimum-current-ratio, is low due to the presence of m-SWNT shunts. These tubes can be eliminated in a single voltage sweep resulting in a high rectification array device. Further analysis also shows that the channel resistance, and not the intrinsic nanotube diode properties, limits the rectification in devices with channel length up to ten micrometer.Comment: Nano Research, 2010, accepte

Circular economy challenges within the road freight transport: Case study of Portuguese companies

    Get PDF
Nowadays, environmental concerns have significantly influenced business management and societal practices, leading to a strong focus on minimizing environmental damage and embracing sustainable development. This has prompted the adoption of greener supply chain practices and the transition towards a circular economy (CE). Companies are under pressure to incorporate green innovation practices, aiming for environmentally friendly and low-carbon development. This research aligns with the principles of the CE, an emerging economic model that emphasizes resource preservation and energy efficiency. CE is also recognized as a key driver for achieving sustainable development goals. However, the road freight transport sector, which is vital for goods transportation, faces challenges in becoming more sustainable due to its significant greenhouse gas emissions. This study analyzes the feasibility of achieving both environmental and financial sustainability in the road freight transport sector in Portugal. This piece of research aims to determine if combining these two concepts is practically viable and explores how transitioning to a circular economy can generate value and enhance environmental sustainability in the sector. Drawing upon the interview results, existing literature, and principles of the circular economy, an analysis was conducted to understand the current obstacles faced by companies in the sector and explore potential solutions. The main findings indicate that implementing the circular economy in the sector requires better technological advancements to ensure the use of fully renewable energy sources and facilitate the reuse of materials in vehicles. Additionally, it is crucial for all stakeholders to participate actively, as the transition to a circular economy is a structural change that necessitates collective efforts from everyone involved.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

Aplastic anemia and severe pancytopenia during treatment with peg-interferon, ribavirin and telaprevir for chronic hepatitis C

Telaprevir and Boceprevir are the first direct acting antivirals approved for chronic hepatitis C in combination with peg-interferon alfa and ribavirin. Pancytopenia due to myelotoxicity caused by these drugs may occur, but severe hematological abnormalities or aplastic anemia (AA) have not been described. We collected all cases of severe pancytopenia observed during triple therapy with telaprevir in four Spanish centers since approval of the drug in 2011. Among 142 cirrhotic patients receiving treatment, 7 cases of severe pancytopenia (5%) were identified and three were consistent with the diagnosis of AA. Mean age was 59 years, five patients had compensated cirrhosis and two patients had severe hepatitis C recurrence after liver transplantation. Severe pancytopenia was diagnosed a median of 10 wk after the initiation of therapy. Three patients had pre-treatment hematological abnormalities related to splenomegaly. In six patients, antiviral treatment was interrupted at the onset of hematological abnormalities. Two patients died due to septic complications and one patient due to acute alveolar hemorrhage. The remaining patients recovered. Severe pancytopenia and especially AA, are not rare during triple therapy with telaprevir in patients with advanced liver disease. Close monitoring is imperative in this setting to promptly detect serious hematological disorders and to prevent further complications

AI-powered chatbots in recruitment from Indian HR professionals’ perspectives: Qualitative study

    Get PDF
Although artificial intelligence (AI) is broadly extended worldwide, full potential is not being reached in human resource management (HRM) so far. In fact, there is still a gap in analyzing the usefulness and limitations of chatbots in recruitment. This piece of research attempts to cover part of this gap paying particular attention to the Indian market. A qualitative analysis has been undertaken in selected Indian companies. One of the main conclusions drawn from the study is the need for mature chatbots in recruitment. Although chatbot has several features from HR professionals’ perspectives, our paper reveals that chatbot has particular limitations in hiring mid-level and senior-level positions. Furthermore, there is a gap between what are Indian IT companies offering for recruiters and what are recruiters know about the latest development of the chatbots. The paper contributes as a food for thought for HR managers and academia by provides an extensive analysis of the usefulness and limitations of chatbots in the recruitment process in India

[EN] Growing interest is being shown in the circular economy (CE) in areas like strategic management, operations management and technology management. Moreover, governments, industry players and academia are increasingly recognizing and focusing on this concept. Adopting CE principles has become crucial for companies to sustain their competitive advantage. CE can be defined as an economic system that aims to eliminate waste and keep resources in continuous use to, thereby, minimize the consumption of raw materials and energy, and the environmental impact.Carrascosa López, C.; Perello-Marin, MR.; Carabal-Montagud, M. The orexigenic gut-brain peptide, ghrelin and its G-protein coupled receptor, the growth hormone secretagogue receptor 1a (GHS-R1A) are pivotal regulators of hypothalamic feeding centers and reward processing neuronal circuits of the brain. These systems operate in a cooperative manner and receive a wide array of neuronal hormone/transmitter messages and metabolic signals. Functional magnetic resonance imaging was employed in the current study to map BOLD responses to ghrelin in different brain regions with special reference on homeostatic and hedonic regulatory centers of energy balance. Experimental groups involved male, ovariectomized female and ovariectomized estradiol-replaced rats. Putative modulation of ghrelin signaling by endocannabinoids was also studied. Ghrelin-evoked effects were calculated as mean of the BOLD responses 30 minutes after administration. In the male rat, ghrelin evoked a slowly decreasing BOLD response in all studied regions of interest (ROI) within the limbic system. This effect was antagonized by pretreatment with GHS-R1A antagonist JMV2959. The comparison of ghrelin effects in the presence or absence of JMV2959 in individual ROIs revealed significant changes in the prefrontal cortex, nucleus accumbens of the telencephalon, and also within hypothalamic centers like the lateral hypothalamus, ventromedial nucleus, paraventricular nucleus and suprachiasmatic nucleus. In the female rat, the ghrelin effects were almost identical to those observed in males. Ovariectomy and chronic estradiol replacement had no effect on the BOLD response. Inhibition of the endocannabinoid signaling by rimonabant significantly attenuated the response of the nucleus accumbens and septum. In summary, ghrelin can modulate hypothalamic and mesolimbic structures controlling energy balance in both sexes. The endocannabinoid signaling system contributes to the manifestation of ghrelin’s BOLD effect in a region specific manner. In females, the estradiol milieu does not influence the BOLD response to ghrelin

[EN] The economic situation worldwide has led to a global rise in female entrepreneurship. Furthermore, entrepreneurial activity has become very important and is considered fundamental to adopt measures that encourage and correct deficiencies. To this end, the purpose of this work is to study the financing of this venture from a gender perspective by taking a sample of entrepreneurs from a Spanish Mediterranean region. We analysed factors of capital structure, company ownership and funding sources (formal and informal), among other aspects, with a sample of 192 surveyed entrepreneurs. By multivariate analysis techniques, the statistically significant differences that appeared between male and female entrepreneurs were studied. This study is important and might be useful because it provides an overview of the current situation of entrepreneurs and funding sources in not only the studied Mediterranean region, but also in similar Mediterranean and/or Spanish regions. This work has been funded by the R+D project for emerging research groups with reference (GVA) GV/2016/078.Cervelló Royo, RE.; Moya Clemente, I.; Perello-Marin, MR.; Ribes-Giner, G.
