Medium-modified average multiplicity and multiplicity fluctuations in jets
The energy evolution of average multiplicities and multiplicity fluctuations
in jets produced in heavy-ion collisions is investigated from a toy
QCD-inspired model. In this model, we use modified splitting functions
accounting for medium-enhanced radiation of gluons by a fast parton which
propagates through the quark gluon plasma. The leading contribution of the
standard production of soft hadrons is enhanced by a factor while
next-to-leading order (NLO) corrections are suppressed by , where
the parameter accounts for the induced-soft gluons in the medium. Our
results for such global observables are cross-checked and compared with their
limits in the vacuum.Comment: 8 pages and 4 figures. Version to be published in EPJ
----------ABSTRACT---------- The aim of this paper was to analyze decisional competence and contextual intelligence in sport among different level of expertise football players. Synthesis of a 12R-type hexagonal perovskite solid solution Sr3NdNb3-xTixO12-delta and the influence of acceptor doping on electrical properties
A solid solution forms for Sr3NdNb3−xTixO12−δ with approximate limits 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.06. The system crystallizes with a 12R-type hexagonal perovskite structure in the space group R[3 with combining macron], as determined by neutron diffraction and selected area electron diffraction. The electrical properties of the end members have been investigated by impedance spectroscopy in the temperature range 550–800 °C under various gas atmospheres and as a function of oxygen and water-vapour partial pressure. Proton transport dominates under wet oxidising conditions in the temperature range 550–700 °C, as confirmed by the H+/D+ isotope effect. Acceptor doping considerably enhances proton conductivity with a value of 3.3 × 10−6 S cm−1 for the bulk response of x = 0.06 at 700 °C in moistened air. The presence of a −¼ slope for both doped and undoped samples in the range 10−19 ≤ pO2 ≤ 10−8 atm at 900 °C indicates n-type transport under reducing conditions following the extrinsic model attributable to acceptor centres. The conductivity is essentially independent of pO2 at 600 °C under dry oxidising conditions, consistent with oxide-ion transport; a positive power-law dependence at higher temperature indicates extrinsic behaviour and a significant electron–hole contribution. The dielectric constant at RT of nominally stoichiometric Sr3NdNb3O12 is εr ∼ 37, with a moderately high quality factor of Q × f ∼ 16 400 GHz at fr ∼ 6.4 GHz. The temperature coefficient of resonant frequency of x = 0 is τf ∼ 12 ppm °C−1, which lowers to −3 ppm °C−1 for the Ti-doped phase x = 0.06
Nickel tissue residue as a biomarker of sub-toxic exposure and susceptibility in amphibian embryos
Although low level exposure to physicochemical agents is the most common environmental scenario, their effects on living organisms are very controversial. However, there is an increasing need to integrate low level exposures from risk assessment to remediation purposes. This study focus on the possibility to employ Ni tissue residue values as biomarkers of sub-toxic exposure and susceptibility to this metal in a range of almost pristine to sub-toxic concentrations for Rhinella arenarum embryos. For that purpose, three batches of amphibian embryos were pretreated during 10 days with three increasing concentrations of Ni starting in 2, 8 and 20 ìg Ni2+ L-1 and ending in 16, 64 and 160 ìg Ni2+ L-1 (in natural fresh waters this value ranges from 2 to 10 ìg L-1; the LC50-24 hr for R. arenarum is 26.2 mg Ni2+ L-1). For the experimental conditions, the Ni tissue residue values at 360 hr post exposure were 0.5, 2.1 and 3.6 ìg Ni g-1 embryo w/w respectively, corresponding to BCFs of 31, 33 and 23. The susceptibility to Ni in those experimental embryos was evaluated by means of challenge exposures to three lethal concentrations of this metal (10, 20 and 30 mg Ni2+ L-1), registering survival during the following 10 days of treatment. As a general pattern, the lower, intermediate and higher pretreatments with Ni resulted in enhanced, neutral and adverse effects on embryonic survival respectively. Thus, sub-toxic exposure to Ni could modify the resistance of the amphibian embryo to this metal and Ni tissue residue values could be considered as biomarkers of both, exposure and susceptibility.Fil: Perez Coll, Cristina Silvia. Hierarchically Porous Gd3+-Doped CeO2 Nanostructures for the Remarkable Enhancement of Optical and Magnetic Properties
Rare earth ion-doped CeO2 has attracted more and more attention because of its special electrical, optical, magnetic, or catalytic properties. In this paper, a facile electrochemical deposition route was reported for the direct growth of the porous Gd-doped CeO2. The formation process of Gd-doped CeO2 composites was investigated. The obtained deposits were characterized by SEM, EDS, XRD, and XPS. The porous Gd3+- doped CeO2 (10 at% Gd) displays a typical type I adsorption isotherm and yields a large specific surface area of 135 m2/g. As Gd3+ ions were doped into CeO2 lattice, the absorption spectrum of Gd3+-doped CeO2 nanocrystals exhibited a red shift compared with porous CeO2 nanocrystals and bulk CeO2, and the luminescence of Gd3+-doped CeO2 deposits was remarkably enhanced due to the presence of more oxygen vacancies. In addition, the strong magnetic properties of Gd-doped CeO2 (10 at% Gd) were observed, which may be caused by Gd3+ ions or more oxygen defects in deposits. In addition, the catalytic activity of porous Gd-doped CeO2 toward CO oxidation was studied
Sustainable pome fruit production in Patagonia, Argentina
Apple and pear production in Argentina mostly takes place in the provinces of Río Negro and Neuquén, along a valley located in an area irrigated by the rivers Neuquén, Limay and Negro. Most commonly agrochemicals applied for these cultures protection are pesticides against mite and codling moth (Cydiapomonella, L). Carbaryl,azinphos-methyl and dimethoate have been recently detected and quantified in water samples from these rivers. Heptachlor, was also found sporadically, despite its use is forbidden in our country. Although these organophosphorus pesticides use is allowed, dimethoate and azinphos-methyl, as well as carbaryl are harmful substances that exert adverse effects through inhibition of cholinesterases and carboxylesterases. Also they are responsible of eliciting antioxidant responses in different organisms. Fruit production in this region became more sustainable in the last years as the consequence of government prohibition on the use of old generation pesticides and the introduction of new generation ones. A National Program designed to avoid codling moth damage, through a sexual confusion method, was implemented in 2006. The codling moth induced damage reached 6,1% of total production in 2003 in farms that were afterwards included in the Program, and 0,73% of it, after 3 years of program development; and at the same time there was a 385 ton/year decrease in azimphos-methyl use. Improvement in management techniques for pests as San José louse and European red mite, as well as government programs for their control promoting the use of non-toxic natural compounds, will certainly contribute to achieve sustainable fruit production in Patagonia.Fil: Sfara, Valeria.
