Lifetime of the eta' meson at low temperature
This work constitutes one part of an investigation of the low-temperature
changes of the properties of the eta' meson. In turn these properties are
strongly tied to the U(1)_A anomaly of Quantum Chromodynamics. The final aim is
to explore the interplay of the chiral anomaly and in-medium effects. We
determine the lifetime of an eta' meson being at rest in a strongly interacting
medium as a function of the temperature. To have a formally well-defined
low-energy limit we use in a first step Chiral Perturbation Theory for a large
number of colors. We determine the pertinent scattering amplitudes in leading
and next-to-leading order. In a second step we include resonances that appear
in the same mass range as the eta' meson. The resonances are introduced such
that the low-energy limit remains unchanged and that they saturate the
corresponding low-energy constants. This requirement fixes all coupling
constants. We find that the width of the eta' meson is significantly increased
from about 200 keV in vacuum to about 10 MeV at a temperature of 120 MeV.Comment: 49 page

Occurrence of mite Ophionyssus natricis (Acari: Macronyssidae) on captive snakes from Panama
We report for the first time the presence of the snake mite, Ophionyssus natricis (Gervais) (Mesostigmata: Macronyssidae) on captive snakes kept at Panama City, Panama. This occurrence adds a new record to the geographical distribution of O. natricis as well as confirms its high prevalence on captive reptiles. Several Boidae species, Boa constrictor, Epicrates maurus, Corallus ruschenbergerii, Corallus caninus and a Pythonidae, Python regius were found infested with intensities varying from 10 to 2200 mites each. These findings represent the second record of O. natricis for Central America
Using the Sound Card as a Timer
Experiments in mechanics can often be timed by the sounds they produce. In
such cases, digital audio recordings provide a simple way of measuring time
intervals with an accuracy comparable to that of photogate timers. We
illustrate this with an experiment in the physics of sports: to measure the

High Energy Break and Reflection Features in the Seyfert Galaxy MCG+8-11-11
We present the results from ASCA and OSSE simultaneous observations of the
Seyfert 1.5 galaxy MCG+8-11-11 performed in August-September 1995. The ASCA
observations indicate a modest flux increase (20%) in 3 days, possibly
correlated to a softening of the 0.6-9 keV spectrum. The spectrum is well
described by a hard power law (Gamma=1.64) absorbed by a column density
slightly larger than the Galactic value, with an iron line at 6.4 keV of EW=400
eV. The simultaneous OSSE data are characterized by a much softer power law
with photon index Gamma=3.0, strongly suggesting the presence of a spectral
break in the hard X/soft gamma-ray band. A joint fit to OSSE and ASCA data
clearly shows an exponential cut-off at about 300 keV, and strong reflection
component. MCG+8-11-11 features a spectral break in the underlying continuum
unambiguously. This, together with the inferred low compactness of this source,
favours thermal or quasi-thermal electron Comptonization in a structured Corona

AGILE detection of delayed gamma-ray emission from GRB 080514B
GRB 080514B is the first gamma ray burst (GRB), since the time of EGRET, for
which individual photons of energy above several tens of MeV have been detected
with a pair-conversion tracker telescope. This burst was discovered with the
Italian AGILE gamma-ray satellite. The GRB was localized with a cooperation by
AGILE and the interplanetary network (IPN). The gamma-ray imager (GRID)
estimate of the position, obtained before the SuperAGILE-IPN localization, is
found to be consistent with the burst position. The hard X-ray emission
observed by SuperAGILE lasted about 7 s, while there is evidence that the
emission above 30 MeV extends for a longer duration (at least ~13 s). Similar
behavior was seen in the past from a few other GRBs observed with EGRET.
However, the latter measurements were affected, during the brightest phases, by
instrumental dead time effects, resulting in only lower limits to the burst
intensity. Thanks to the small dead time of the AGILE/GRID we could assess that
in the case of GRB 080514B the gamma-ray to X-ray flux ratio changes
significantly between the prompt and extended emission phase.Comment: A&A letters, in pres
Continuous slice functional calculus in quaternionic Hilbert spaces
The aim of this work is to define a continuous functional calculus in
quaternionic Hilbert spaces, starting from basic issues regarding the notion of
spherical spectrum of a normal operator. As properties of the spherical
spectrum suggest, the class of continuous functions to consider in this setting
is the one of slice quaternionic functions. Slice functions generalize the
concept of slice regular function, which comprises power series with
quaternionic coefficients on one side and that can be seen as an effective
generalization to quaternions of holomorphic functions of one complex variable.
The notion of slice function allows to introduce suitable classes of real,
complex and quaternionic --algebras and to define, on each of these
--algebras, a functional calculus for quaternionic normal operators. In
particular, we establish several versions of the spectral map theorem. Some of
the results are proved also for unbounded operators. However, the mentioned
continuous functional calculi are defined only for bounded normal operators.
