IBM system/360 assembly language interval arithmetic software
Computer software designed to perform interval arithmetic is described. An interval is defined as the set of all real numbers between two given numbers including or excluding one or both endpoints. Interval arithmetic consists of the various elementary arithmetic operations defined on the set of all intervals, such as interval addition, subtraction, union, etc. One of the main applications of interval arithmetic is in the area of error analysis of computer calculations. For example, it has been used sucessfully to compute bounds on sounding errors in the solution of linear algebraic systems, error bounds in numerical solutions of ordinary differential equations, as well as integral equations and boundary value problems. The described software enables users to implement algorithms of the type described in references efficiently on the IBM 360 system
Technique for pinpointing submicron particles in the electron microprobe

Strong CH^+ J = 1–0 emission and absorption in DR21
We report the first detection of the ground-state rotational transition of the methylidyne cation CH^+ towards the massive star-forming region DR 21 with the HIFI instrument onboard the Herschel satellite. The line profile exhibits a broad emission line, in addition to two deep and broad absorption features associated with the DR 21 molecular ridge and foreground gas. These observations allow us to determine a ^(12)CH^(+)J = 1–0 line frequency of ν = 835 137 ± 3 MHz, in good agreement with a recent experimental determination. We estimate the CH^+ column density to be a few 10^(13) cm^(-2) in the gas seen in emission, and >10^(14) cm^(-2) in the components responsible for the absorption, which is indicative of a high line of sight average abundance [CH^+] /[H] > 1.2 × 10^(-8). We show that the CH^+ column densities agree well with the predictions of state-of-the-art C-shock models in dense UV-illuminated gas for the emission line, and with those of turbulent dissipation models in diffuse gas for the absorption lines
Evaluation of ERTS-1 imagery for land use/resource inventory information
This investigation was to develop a low cost, manual technique for enhancing ERTS-1 imagery and preparing it in suitable format for use by users with wide and varied interests related to land use and natural resources information. The goals were: to develop enhancement techniques based on concepts and practices extant in photographic sciences, to provide a means of allowing productive interpretation of the imagery by manual means, to produce a product at low cost, to provide a product that would have wide applications, and one compatible with existing information systems. Cost of preparation of the photographically enhanced, enlarged negatives and positives and the diazo materials is about 1 cent per square mile. Cost of creating and mapping a land use classification of twelve use types at a scale of 1:250,000 is only $1 per square mile. The product is understood by users, is economical, and is compatible with existing information systems

Ground Systems Development Environment (GSDE) interface requirements analysis: Operations scenarios
This report is a preliminary assessment of the functional and data interface requirements to the link between the GSDE GS/SPF (Amdahl) and the Space Station Control Center (SSCC) and Space Station Training Facility (SSTF) Integration, Verification, and Test Environments (IVTE's). These interfaces will be involved in ground software development of both the control center and the simulation and training systems. Our understanding of the configuration management (CM) interface and the expected functional characteristics of the Amdahl-IVTE interface is described. A set of assumptions and questions that need to be considered and resolved in order to complete the interface functional and data requirements definitions are presented. A listing of information items defined to describe software configuration items in the GSDE CM system is included. It also includes listings of standard reports of CM information and of CM-related tools in the GSDE
