Oscillatory Spin Polarization and Magneto-Optic Kerr Effect in Fe3O4 Thin Films on GaAs(001)

The spin dependent properties of epitaxial Fe3O4 thin films on GaAs(001) are studied by the ferromagnetic proximity polarization (FPP) effect and magneto-optic Kerr effect (MOKE). Both FPP and MOKE show oscillations with respect to Fe3O4 film thickness, and the oscillations are large enough to induce repeated sign reversals. We attribute the oscillatory behavior to spin-polarized quantum well states forming in the Fe3O4 film. Quantum confinement of the t2g states near the Fermi level provides an explanation for the similar thickness dependences of the FPP and MOKE oscillations.Comment: to appear in Phys. Rev. Let

Substrate specificity provides insights into the sugar donor recognition mechanism of O-GlcNAc transferase (OGT).

O-Linked β-N-acetylglucosaminyl transferase (OGT) plays an important role in the glycosylation of proteins, which is involved in various cellular events. In human, three isoforms of OGT (short OGT [sOGT]; mitochondrial OGT [mOGT]; and nucleocytoplasmic OGT [ncOGT]) share the same catalytic domain, implying that they might adopt a similar catalytic mechanism, including sugar donor recognition. In this work, the sugar-nucleotide tolerance of sOGT was investigated. Among a series of uridine 5'-diphosphate-N-acetylglucosamine (UDP-GlcNAc) analogs tested using the casein kinase II (CKII) peptide as the sugar acceptor, four compounds could be used by sOGT, including UDP-6-deoxy-GlcNAc, UDP-GlcNPr, UDP-6-deoxy-GalNAc and UDP-4-deoxy-GlcNAc. Determined values of Km showed that the substitution of the N-acyl group, deoxy modification of C6/C4-OH or epimerization of C4-OH of the GlcNAc in UDP-GlcNAc decreased its affinity to sOGT. A molecular docking study combined with site-directed mutagenesis indicated that the backbone carbonyl oxygen of Leu653 and the hydroxyl group of Thr560 in sOGT contributed to the recognition of the sugar moiety via hydrogen bonds. The close vicinity between Met501 and the N-acyl group of GlcNPr, as well as the hydrophobic environment near Met501, were responsible for the selective binding of UDP-GlcNPr. These findings illustrate the interaction of OGT and sugar nucleotide donor, providing insights into the OGT catalytic mechanism

PACIAE 2.0: An updated parton and hadron cascade model (program) for the relativistic nuclear collisions

We have updated the parton and hadron cascade model PACIAE for the relativistic nuclear collisions, from based on JETSET 6.4 and PYTHIA 5.7 to based on PYTHIA 6.4, and renamed as PACIAE 2.0. The main physics concerning the stages of the parton initiation, parton rescattering, hadronization, and hadron rescattering were discussed. The structures of the programs were briefly explained. In addition, some calculated examples were compared with the experimental data. It turns out that this model (program) works well.Comment: 23 pages, 7 figure

Absurdity underneath realistic elements in Pinter’s The Dumb Waiter

This paper is a study on the absurdity underneath the realistic factors in Harold Pinter’s The Dumb Waiter. Through analyzing the realistic elements in The Dumb Waiter’s setting, plot and characterization respectively, this paper attempts to prove that despite these realistic aspects, the overall effect of the play is one of uncertainty and absurdity. Key words: The Dumb Waiter, realism, absurdity Résumé: L’article présent étudie principalement l’utilisation des éléments réalistes et l’absurdité cachée sous l’apparence réaliste dans la pièce d’Harold Pinter- Le Serveur muet.

Local density of states and scanning tunneling currents in graphene

We present exact analytical calculations of scanning tunneling currents in locally disordered graphene using a multimode description of the microscope tip. Analytical expressions for the local density of states (LDOS) are given for energies beyond the Dirac cone approximation. We show that the LDOS at the AA and BB sublattices of graphene are out of phase by π\pi implying that the averaged LDOS, as one moves away from the impurity, shows no trace of the 2qF2q_F (with qFq_F the Fermi momentum) Friedel modulation. This means that a STM experiment lacking atomic resolution at the sublattice level will not be able of detecting the presence of the Friedel oscillations [this seems to be the case in the experiments reported in Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 101}, 206802 (2008)]. The momentum maps of the LDOS for different types of impurities are given. In the case of the vacancy, 2qF2q_F features are seen in these maps. In all momentum space maps, KK and K+KK+K^\prime features are seen. The K+KK+K^\prime features are different from what is seen around zero momentum. An interpretation for these features is given. The calculations reported here are valid for chemical substitution impurities, such as boron and nitrogen atoms, as well as for vacancies. It is shown that the density of states close to the impurity is very sensitive to type of disorder: diagonal, non-diagonal, or vacancies. In the case of weakly coupled (to the carbon atoms) impurities, the local density of states presents strong resonances at finite energies, which leads to steps in the scanning tunneling currents and to suppression of the Fano factor.Comment: 21 pages.
