A comparative study of open and closed heat-engines for small-scale CHP applications
In this paper the authors compare and contrast open and closed-cycle heat engines. First of all, by way of example and to aid discussion, the performance of proprietary externally heated closed-cycle Stirling engines is compared with that of internally heated open Otto cycle engines. Both types of engine have disadvantages and merits and this suggested that in order to accommodate the best of both engine types an externally-heated open-cycle engine might offer a more satisfactory solution for small-scale combined heat and power (CHP) systems. To investigate this possibility further the paper goes on to compare the performance of externally-heated and recuperated Joule hot-air cycle engines with that of an externally-heated closed Stirling cycle engines. The results show that an externally heated recuperated open Joule cycle engine can exceed that of a closed cycle Stirling engine operating between the same heat source and sink temperatures when a variable temperature heat source is used
Valuing initial teacher education at Master's level
The future of Master’s-level work in initial teacher education (ITE) in England seems uncertain. Whilst the coalition government has expressed support for Master’s-level work, its recent White Paper focuses on teaching skills as the dominant form of professional development. This training discourse is in tension with the view of professional learning advocated by ITE courses that offer Master’s credits. Following a survey of the changing perceptions of Master’s-level study during a Post Graduate Certificate in Education course by student teachers in four subject groups, this paper highlights how the process of professional learning can have the most impact on how they value studying at a higher level during their early professional development

Vitamin D intake and risk of CVD and all-cause mortality: evidence from the Caerphilly Prospective Cohort Study
OBJECTIVE:
Prospective data on the associations between vitamin D intake and risk of CVD and all-cause mortality are limited and inconclusive. The aim of the present study was to investigate the associations between vitamin D intake and CVD risk and all-cause mortality in the Caerphilly Prospective Cohort Study.
DESIGN:
The associations of vitamin D intake with CVD risk markers were examined cross-sectionally at baseline and longitudinally at 5-year, 10-year and >20-year follow-ups. In addition, the predictive value of vitamin D intake for CVD events and all-cause mortality after >20 years of follow-up was examined. Logistic regression and general linear regression were used for data analysis.
SETTING:
Participants in the UK.
SUBJECTS:
Men (n 452) who were free from CVD and type 2 diabetes at recruitment.
RESULTS:
Higher vitamin D intake was associated with increased HDL cholesterol (P=0·003) and pulse pressure (P=0·04) and decreased total cholesterol:HDL cholesterol (P=0·008) cross-sectionally at baseline, but the associations were lost during follow-up. Furthermore, higher vitamin D intake was associated with decreased concentration of plasma TAG at baseline (P=0·01) and at the 5-year (P=0·01), but not the 10-year examination. After >20 years of follow-up, vitamin D was not associated with stroke (n 72), myocardial infarctions (n 142), heart failure (n 43) or all-cause mortality (n 281), but was positively associated with increased diastolic blood pressure (P=0·03).
CONCLUSIONS:
The study supports associations of higher vitamin D intake with lower fasting plasma TAG and higher diastolic blood pressure
The NIRSPEC Brown Dwarf Spectroscopic Survey. I. Low-Resolution Near-Infrared Spectra
We present the first results of a near-infrared (0.96-2.31 micron)
spectroscopic survey of M, L, and T dwarfs obtained with NIRSPEC on the Keck II
telescope. Our new survey has a resolving power of R = 2000 and is comprised of
two major data sets: 53 J-band (1.14-1.36 micron) spectra covering all spectral
types from M6 to T8 with at least two members in each spectral subclass
(wherever possible), and 25 flux-calibrated spectra from 1.14 to 2.31 microns
for most spectral classes between M6 and T8. Sixteen of these 25 objects have
additional spectral coverage from 0.96-1.14 microns to provide overlap with
optical spectra. Spectral flux ratio indexes for prominent molecular bands are
derived and equivalent widths (EWs) for several atomic lines are measured. We
find that a combination of four H2O and two CH4 band strengths can be used for
spectral classification. Weak (EW~1-2 angstrom) atomic lines of Al I and Ca I

Characterizing the Chemistry of the Milky Way Stellar Halo: Detailed Chemical Analysis of a Metal-Poor Stellar Stream
We present the results of a detailed abundance analysis of one of the
confirmed building blocks of the Milky Way stellar halo, a
kinematically-coherent metal-poor stellar stream. We have obtained high
resolution and high S/N spectra of 12 probable stream members using the MIKE
spectrograph on the Magellan-Clay Telescope at Las Campanas Observatory and the
2dCoude spectrograph on the Smith Telescope at McDonald Observatory. We have
derived abundances or upper limits for 51 species of 46 elements in each of
these stars. The stream members show a range of metallicity (-3.4 < [Fe/H] <
-1.5) but are otherwise chemically homogeneous, with the same star-to-star
dispersion in [X/Fe] as the rest of the halo. This implies that, in principle,
a significant fraction of the Milky Way stellar halo could have formed from
accreted systems like the stream. The stream stars show minimal evolution in
the alpha or Fe-group elements over the range of metallicity. This stream is
enriched with material produced by the main and weak components of the rapid
neutron-capture process and shows no evidence for enrichment by the slow
neutron-capture process.Comment: v2: Removed references to M15 after learning that the source

Detection of Elements at All Three r-process Peaks in the Metal-Poor Star HD 160617
We report the first detection of elements at all three r-process peaks in the
metal-poor halo star HD 160617. These elements include arsenic and selenium,
which have not been detected previously in halo stars, and the elements
tellurium, osmium, iridium, and platinum, which have been detected previously.
Absorption lines of these elements are found in archive observations made with
the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph onboard the Hubble Space Telescope. We
present up-to-date absolute atomic transition probabilities and complete line
component patterns for these elements. Additional archival spectra of this star
from several ground-based instruments allow us to derive abundances or upper
limits of 45 elements in HD 160617, including 27 elements produced by
neutron-capture reactions. The average abundances of the elements at the three
r-process peaks are similar to the predicted solar system r-process residuals
when scaled to the abundances in the rare earth element domain. This result for
arsenic and selenium may be surprising in light of predictions that the
production of the lightest r-process elements generally should be decoupled

Disfluency in dialogue:an intentional signal from the speaker?
Disfluency is a characteristic feature of spontaneous human speech, commonly seen as a consequence of problems with production. However, the question remains open as to why speakers are disfluent: Is it a mechanical by-product of planning difficulty, or do speakers use disfluency in dialogue to manage listeners' expectations? To address this question, we present two experiments investigating the production of disfluency in monologue and dialogue situations. Dialogue affected the linguistic choices made by participants, who aligned on referring expressions by choosing less frequent names for ambiguous images where those names had previously been mentioned. However, participants were no more disfluent in dialogue than in monologue situations, and the distribution of types of disfluency used remained constant. Our evidence rules out at least a straightforward interpretation of the view that disfluencies are an intentional signal in dialogue. © 2012 Psychonomic Society, Inc
Blood pressure variability and cardiovascular risk in the PROspective study of pravastatin in the elderly at risk (PROSPER)
Variability in blood pressure predicts cardiovascular disease in young- and middle-aged subjects, but relevant data for older individuals are sparse. We analysed data from the PROspective Study of Pravastatin in the Elderly at Risk (PROSPER) study of 5804 participants aged 70–82 years with a history of, or risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Visit-to-visit variability in blood pressure (standard deviation) was determined using a minimum of five measurements over 1 year; an inception cohort of 4819 subjects had subsequent in-trial 3 years follow-up; longer-term follow-up (mean 7.1 years) was available for 1808 subjects. Higher systolic blood pressure variability independently predicted long-term follow-up vascular and total mortality (hazard ratio per 5 mmHg increase in standard deviation of systolic blood pressure = 1.2, 95% confidence interval 1.1–1.4; hazard ratio 1.1, 95% confidence interval 1.1–1.2, respectively). Variability in diastolic blood pressure associated with increased risk for coronary events (hazard ratio 1.5, 95% confidence interval 1.2–1.8 for each 5 mmHg increase), heart failure hospitalisation (hazard ratio 1.4, 95% confidence interval 1.1–1.8) and vascular (hazard ratio 1.4, 95% confidence interval 1.1–1.7) and total mortality (hazard ratio 1.3, 95% confidence interval 1.1–1.5), all in long-term follow-up. Pulse pressure variability was associated with increased stroke risk (hazard ratio 1.2, 95% confidence interval 1.0–1.4 for each 5 mmHg increase), vascular mortality (hazard ratio 1.2, 95% confidence interval 1.0–1.3) and total mortality (hazard ratio 1.1, 95% confidence interval 1.0–1.2), all in long-term follow-up. All associations were independent of respective mean blood pressure levels, age, gender, in-trial treatment group (pravastatin or placebo) and prior vascular disease and cardiovascular disease risk factors. Our observations suggest variability in diastolic blood pressure is more strongly associated with vascular or total mortality than is systolic pressure variability in older high-risk subjects
