The effect of income on service export have been modelled and assessed in a trivariate model using time series annual data for Ghana for the period 2005-2013. The analysis is based on ordinary least square (OLS) method of regression. The results seem to suggest that income is positively associated with service export. The findings support theories on income and trade. The implication of the findings is that income is a policy variable to influence service trade. Future study should use larger sample size to ensure there is more external validity of the findings. Causal studies should be considered in future studies

What is the Effect of Economic Globalisation on the Productivity of the Manufacturing Sector of Ghana?

The research paper investigates the stable long run hypothesis between globalisation and manufacturing sector productivity for Ghana for the period 1961-2013 using annual time series data. The augmented Dickey Fuller (ADF, for unit root analysis) and Kwiatkowski–Phillips–Schmidt–Shin (KPSS, unit root analysis), OLS (regression analysis), Johansen test (long run analysis), VECM (short run analysis), and the granger causality (causality analysis) tests were used. The findings suggest the data were integrated of order one. The findings of the study seem to indicate that the manufacturing sector has not benefited from globalisation. There is the need to introduce various policy measures such as improvement in security to reduce risk and uncertainty of foreign investment into the manufacturing sector; improvement in infrastructure to encourage domestic and foreign investment into the manufacturing sector; and strong political will to attract investors into the sector. Further studies should consider the effect of other factors (electricity) and other proxies of globalisation (foreign direct investment, financial liberalisation, investment liberalisation, and multinational firm activity) on the manufacturing sector performance to determine if the findings will be replicated. The issues of structural breaks should be investigated in future studies

Reflections from Cross-Gender Fieldwork Experiences in Open Markets in Ghana

Fieldwork can be an enjoyable academic adventure producing lifelong experiences of excitement and a sense of academic accomplishment. However, it can be an equally frustrating undertaking, especially when carried out in ‘unfamiliar’ environments. This paper adds to the growing number of studies about fieldworkers’ experiences by reflecting on the complexities involved in the process and proffering ways to respond to them. We share our perspectives as three adult African males conducting research in a predominantly female space in two informal markets in Accra, Ghana. To do this, we engage with five issues related to fieldwork: preparing to enter the field; negotiating access; handling interviews; dealing with ethical dilemmas; and exiting the field. We found that being male is not a barrier to conducting research in a predominantly female space. The success of our fieldwork was a product of our ability to adapt, be creative, appreciate our inadequacies, learn quickly and also take some practical and common-sense steps. Our hope is that the insights shared in this paper will serve as a compass for prospective fieldworkers.</jats:p

Background: Patients with gynaecological disorders often suffer from psychological disorders including anxiety and depression. Although depression and anxiety have been studied in Ghana, data regarding the prevalence of these disorders in patients with gynaecological disorders is non-existent. The aim of the study was to investigate the prevalence of anxiety and depression in reproductive-aged women diagnosed with gynaecological disorders. Methods: Cross-sectional observational study was conducted at the Gynaecology Clinic of Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, a tertiary health facility in Accra, Ghana. Patients of reproductive age seeking gynaecological care at the facility from December 2018 to January 2019 were assessed for anxiety and depression using the Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) questionnaire and the Beck depression inventory (BDI) respectively. Sociodemographic and clinical information was gathered as well. Results: Of the 120 patients interviewed (mean age 34.33±0.66), 36.7% were depressed while 51.6% were reported anxiety disorders. Patients aged 35-45 years had the highest prevalence of anxiety (24.58%) and depression (29.18%). Again, prevalence rates were highest among respondents with senior high school as the highest educational qualification, (anxiety (22.15%); depression (24.20%). Patients suffering from pelvic floor disorder recorded the highest prevalence of anxiety (11.40%) and depression (13.77%). There was a significant association between depression and gynaecological disorders [χ2(25) =53.915, p=0.001, CI=95%], but there was not enough evidence of an association between anxiety and gynaecological disorders [χ2(15) =22.791, p=0.089, CI=95%].Conclusions: Anxiety and depression are prevalent amongst women in their reproductive age diagnosed presenting with gynaecological disorders and there is a significant association between gynaecological disorders and the prevalence of depression

A comprehensive investigation of low-frequency noise characteristics of GaAs and GaAsBi based infrared laser diodes with parabolic and rectangular quantum wells were carried out. The aim of the investigation was to characterize the performance and quality of the lasers, to clear up noise origins in their structures. The investigated laser diodes were grown by molecular beam epitaxy. Measured characteristics include current-voltage characteristics and light output power (operating characteristic), low-frequency (10 Hz – 20 kHz) optical and electrical noise properties, and cross-correlation factor between optical and electrical fluctuations. Measurements were carried out at room temperature and in temperature range from 88 K to 300 K for PQW lasers. Current-voltage characteristic of the investigated laser diodes do not deviate far from the ideal behavior: the non-ideality factor of current-voltage characteristic is between 1 and 2. The flowing current mainly consists of diffusion and generation and recombination current components. In low frequency noise characteristics, 1/f noise and generation and recombination fluctuations with Lorentzian spectrum are manifested. Presence of 1/f noise is caused by the superposition processes of generation and recombination of charge carrier. These generation and recombination carriers’ centers are formed by different defects, dislocations, and imperfections in the active region of the laser diode structure. Electrical noise intensity for GaAsBi laser diode is very high as compared with GaAs rectangular and parabolic quantum well lasers due to larger number of defects caused by introduction of bismuth. Cross-correlation factor between optical and electrical fluctuations shows a high positive correlation of optical and electrical, what indicates that there are defects in the active region of investigated laser diodes which control current flow through the active region. Noise spectra at different temperatures were modeled and fitted by superposition of thermal noise, 1/f^α, 1/f and two Lorentzian components. The activation energy of observed two generation and recombination processes was evaluated and obtained 16.0 meV and 20.4 meV. Results showed that low frequency noise characteristics of the investigated laser diodes do not depend on the quantum well profile (rectangular or parabolic), but noise intensity is larger for GaAsBi based devices
