Subfactor realisation of modular invariants
We study the problem of realising modular invariants by braided subfactors
and the related problem of classifying nimreps. We develop the fusion rule
structure of these modular invariants. This structure is useful tool in the
analysis of modular data from quantum double subfactors, particularly those of
the double of cyclic groups, the symmetric group on 3 letters and the double of
the subfactors with principal graph the extended Dynkin diagram D_5^(1). In
particular for the double of S_3, 14 of the 48 modular modular invariants are
nimless, and only 28 of the remaining 34 nimble invariants can be realised by
subfactors
Dynamic nonlinear analyses for the 4-storey infilled R/C frame: study of a retrofitting solution
A research project on assessment and retrofitting of R/C frame structures is currently being developed under the research programme of the ICONS TMR-research network. This paper presents and discusses the preliminary experimental results from a 4-storey bare frame representative of the common practice of 40~50 years ago in most south European countries and devotes special attention to the study of a retrofitting solution based on bracing and rubber dissipaters, which intends to increase stiffness and damping reducing consequently the earthquake deformation demands.O estudo aqui apresentado concentra-se numa solução de reforço de um pórtico utilizando contraventamentos (k-bracing) com perfis de aço em conjunto com elementos elastoméricos de dissipação. Os resultados das análises não lineares da estrutura com e sem alvenaria e com reforço são apresentados e discutidos. Na segunda parte da comunicação apresentam-se os resultados experimentais já disponíveis e discute-se o problema da modelação recorrendo aos resultados experimentais e comparando os resultados obtidos com diferentes tipos de modelos
Development and standardization of a protocol for sperm cryopreservation of two important commercial oyster species
Dissertação de mestrado, Aquacultura e Pescas, Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia, Universidade do Algarve, 2015Aquaculture activities have a huge contribution for the world food production and their development is extremely necessary to answer to the lack of resources, especially to the demand for seafood. Bivalve production, especially Crassostrea angulata (Portuguese oyster) has been practiced from long ago, and although its production suffered several constraints, in recent years it has been increasing the interests in recovering production and in preserving nature populations. In this sense, new research needs to guarantee an efficient and economically viable production, contributing to a relatively new environmental concern: wild population restoration.
Nowadays, pure wild populations of Crassostrea angulata are rare to find due to multiple factors that affected this oyster industry. Cryopreservation technology could promote alternative techniques to contribute for the resource management efficiency of the Portuguese oyster and associated economic activity. In this sense, standardization of procedures is important for Crassostrea genus. At the present there are no cryopreservation reports on Crassostrea angulata sperm, and therefore, one of the objectives of this work is to design a cryopreservation protocol for this species, testing the more adequate cryoprotectant solution, its ideal concentration, different freezing rates and types of containers. In parallel, this stablished protocol was applied in Crassostrea gigas and compared to other previously published for this species.
Analysis of motility, viability, agglutination and fertilizations were used as guides for the establishment of the protocol in C. angulata. Moreover, ATP content, DNA fragmentation and lipid peroxidation were done in order to standardize the same protocol for both species. Movement analysis were assessed by CASA system, viability through common staining techniques and flow cytometer, agglutination was quantified according to the scale developed by Dong et al., (2007), ATP content determined by bioluminescence, Comet assay was performed to quantify the DNA fragmentation and lipid peroxidation determined spectrophotometrically by measuring the absorbance of the malondialdehyde (MDA).
Significant differences were observed (p<0.05) for lipid peroxidation and fertilization trials whereas ATP content and fragmentation of DNA of the cryopreserved samples did
not differ significantly from the control. In C. gigas, the same analysis were performed and did not reveal post-thaw quality differences in the samples cryopreserved with 10% DMSO.
The established protocol revealed to be effective and with a low degree of cellular damage on C. angulata sperm and, at the same time, viable to apply in other species, such as Crassostrea gigas

The Wheeler-DeWitt Quantization Can Solve the Singularity Problem
We study the Wheeler-DeWitt quantum cosmology of a spatially flat Friedmann
cosmological model with a massless free scalar field. We compare the consistent
histories approach with the de Broglie-Bohm theory when applied to this simple
model under two different quantization schemes: the Schr\"odinger-like
quantization, which essentially takes the square-root of the resulting
Klein-Gordon equation through the restriction to positive frequencies and their
associated Newton-Wigner states, or the induced Klein-Gordon quantization, that
allows both positive and negative frequencies together. We show that the
consistent histories approach can give a precise answer to the question
concerning the existence of a quantum bounce if and only if one takes the
single frequency approach and within a single family of histories, namely, a
family containing histories concerning properties of the quantum system at only
two specific moments of time: the infinity past and the infinity future. In
that case, as shown by Craig and Singh \cite{CS}, there is no quantum bounce.
In any other situation, the question concerning the existence of a quantum
bounce has no meaning in the consistent histories approach. On the contrary, we
show that if one considers the de Broglie-Bohm theory, there are always states
where quantum bounces occur in both quantization schemes. Hence the assertion
that the Wheeler-DeWitt quantization does not solve the singularity problem in
cosmology is not precise. To address this question, one must specify not only
the quantum interpretation adopted but also the quantization scheme chosen.Comment: 13 pages, 1 figur
Type II Supernovae as Standardized Candles
We present evidence for a correlation between expansion velocities of the
ejecta of Type II plateau supernovae and their bolometric luminosities during
the plateau phase. This correlation permits one to standardize the candles and
decrease the scatter in the Hubble diagram from ~1 mag to a level of 0.4 and
0.3 mag in the V and I bands, respectively. When we restrict the sample to the
eight objects which are well in the Hubble flow (cz > 3,000 km/s) the scatter
drops even further to only 0.2 mag (or 9% in distance), which is comparable to
the precision yielded by Type Ia supernovae and far better than the ``expanding
photosphere method'' applied to Type II supernovae. Using SN 1987A to calibrate
