Profitability of technical trading strategies in emerging Sri Lankan stock market
This study examines whether the technical trading strategies can outperform the unconditional buy-and-hold strategy to forecast stock price movements and earn excess returns, after adjusting transaction costs, in emerging Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE). The study uses daily market closing prices of All Share Price Index (ASPI), which is a composite index to represent whole market, for twenty five years from January 1985 to December 2010. The variable length moving average method and fixed length moving average method with sixteen different rules is used as the methodology to analyze data. The empirical findings of the study confirmed that the moving average trading strategies have statistically significant predictive ability in explaining the market and capable of generating excess return to investors. However after considering transaction costs the excess return is negligible.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.4038/kjm.v2i2.6549 Kelaniya Journal of Management Vol.2(2) 2013:32-50</p
Environmental-Toxicological Characteristics of Waters and Their Sources at Magnitogorsk With the Its Iron and Steel Industry
This study summarizes the information necessary to characterize and assess the quality of drinking and industrial water supply in industrial centers with metallurgical engineering and provides information about the pollution impact on the natural environment. The study shows the influence of air pollution, of the soil pollution on the environment of water objects; it also demonstrates the role of the quality of water supply for establishing a higher risk of health problems for children
Postnatal depression across countries and cultures : a qualitative study
Background: Postnatal depression seems to be a universal condition with
similar rates in different countries. However, anthropologists question the
cross-cultural equivalence of depression,
particularly at a life stage so influenced by
cultural factors.
Aims: To develop a qualitative method to explore whether postnatal depression is universally recognised, attributed and
described and to enquire into people’s
perceptions of remedies and services for
morbid states of unhappiness within the
context of local services.
Method: The study took place in 15 centres in 11 countries and drew on three groups of informants: focus groups with new mothers, interviews with fathers and
grandmothers, and interviews with health
professionals.Textual analysis of these three groups was conducted separately in each centre and emergent themes compared across centres.
Results: All centres described morbid unhappiness after childbirth comparable
to postnatal depression but not all saw this
as an illness remediable by health interventions.
Conclusions: Although the findings of
this study support the universality of a
morbid state of unhappiness following childbirth, they also support concerns
about the cross-cultural equivalence of postnatal depression as an illness requiring the intervention of health professionals;
this has implications for future research
Soundscape assessment: Towards a validated translation of perceptual attributes in different languages
The recently published ISO/TS 12913-2:2018 standard aims to provide researchers and practitioners around the world with a reliable questionnaire for soundscape characterization. The ISO Technical Specifications report protocols and attributes grounded in the soundscape literature, but only includes an English version. The applicability and reliability of these attributes in non-English speaking regions remains an open question, as research investigating translations of soundscape attributes is limited. To address this gap, an international collaboration was initiated with soundscape researchers from all over the world. Translation into 15 different languages, obtained through focus groups and panels of experts in soundscape studies, are proposed. The main challenges and outcomes of this preliminary exercise are discussed. The long-term objective is to validate the proposed translations using standardized listening experiments in different languages and geographical regions as a way to promote a widespread use of the soundscape attributes, both in academia and practice, across locations, populations and languages

A systematic literature review on financial capability of small and medium entrepreneurs
The lack of financial capability has become a contemporary issue around the
globe. Currently there is a high level of individual indebtedness, an increasing
trend of complexity in the financial market, rapidly changing financial landscape,
and increased individual responsibility, specifically the growing need of financial
capability. The main objective of this study is to critically evaluate the literature
on financial capability. The study identified different aspects and different
measures of financial capability, levels of financial capability of small and medium
entrepreneurs, consequences of financial incapability and methods of improving
financial capability. The study revealed financial capability can be improved from
tailor-made training programs and workshops. Also, it is necessary to follow up
the individual’s acts and their behavior to identify whether their performances
changed according to the advice given. Finally, the financially capable individual
has the capacity to participate more effectively in society and contribute
significantly to the economic growth of the country
