Noncommutative Geometry and Conformal Geometry. III. Vafa-Witten Inequality and Poincar\'e Duality

This paper is the the third part of a series of paper whose aim is to use of the framework of \emph{twisted spectral triples} to study conformal geometry from a noncommutive geometric viewpoint. In this paper we reformulate the inequality of Vafa-Witten \cite{VW:CMP84} in the setting of twisted spectral triples. This involves a notion of Poincar\'e duality for twisted spectral triples. Our main results have various consequences. In particular, we obtain a version in conformal geometry of the original inequality of Vafa-Witten, in the sense of an explicit control of the Vafa-Witten bound under conformal changes of metric. This result has several noncommutative manifestations for conformal deformations of ordinary spectral triples, spectral triples associated to conformal weights on noncommutative tori, and spectral triples associated to duals of torsion-free discrete cocompact subgroups satisfying the Baum-Connes conjecture.Comment: Final version. 38 page

Privileged Coordinates and Nilpotent Approximation of Carnot Manifolds, I. General Results

In this paper we attempt to give a systematic account on privileged coordinates and the nilpotent approximation of Carnot manifolds. By a Carnot manifold it is meant a manifold with a distinguished filtration of subbundles of the tangent bundle which is compatible with the Lie bracket of vector fields. This paper lies down the background for its sequel by clarifying a few points on privileged coordinates and the nilpotent approximation of Carnot manifolds. In particular, we give a description of all the systems of privileged coordinates at a given point. We also give an algebraic characterization of all nilpotent groups that appear as the nilpotent approximation at a given point. In fact, given a nilpotent group GG satisfying this algebraic characterization, we exhibit all the changes of variables that transform a given system of privileged coordinates into another system of privileged coordinates in which the nilpotent approximation is given by GG.Comment: v2: final version. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1510.0585
