Experimental results on the physical model of an USBR type II stilling basin
The present paper describes the experimental campaign carried on the physical model of the spillway of Lower Diamphwe Dam (Malawi), which is provided with a USBR type II stilling basin. Stilling basins are used in order to reduce the excessive kinetic energy of flowing water downstream of spillways. Specifically, a USBR type II basin is provided with blocks at the end of the chute and with a confining dentated sill; these appurtenances allow to dissipate excess energy with high efficiency. The study focuses on the hydraulic behavior of the stilling basin; tests were carried on for different values of incoming discharge and downstream water depth. Results show the dissipation efficiency of the stilling basin in terms of pressure fluctuation and the variability of the jump type with the hydraulic characteristics of the incoming and the downstream flow depths
Using R via PHP for Teaching Purposes: R-php
This paper deals with the R-php statistical software, that is an environment for statistical
analysis, freely accessible and attainable through the World Wide Web, based on
R. Indeed, this software uses, as “engine” for statistical analyses, R via PHP and its design
has been inspired by a paper of de Leeuw (1997). R-php is based on two modules: a base
module and a point-and-click module. R-php base allows the simple editing of R code in
a form. R-php point-and-click allows some statistical analyses by means of a graphical
user interface (GUI): then, to use this module it is not necessary for the user to know
the R environment, but all the allowed analyses can be performed by using the computer
mouse. We think that this tool could be particularly useful for teaching purposes: one
possible use could be in a University computer laboratory to permit a smooth approach
of students to R
Corpus callosum involvement: a useful clue for differentiating Fabry Disease from Multiple Sclerosis.
PURPOSE:
Multiple sclerosis (MS) has been proposed as a possible differential diagnosis for Fabry disease (FD). The aim of this work was to evaluate the involvement of corpus callosum (CC) on MR images and its possible role as a radiological sign to differentiate between FD and MS.
METHODS:
In this multicentric study, we retrospectively evaluated the presence of white matter lesions (WMLs) on the FLAIR images of 104 patients with FD and 117 patients with MS. The incidence of CC-WML was assessed in the two groups and also in a subgroup of 37 FD patients showing neurological symptoms.
RESULTS:
WMLs were detected in 50 of 104 FD patients (48.1%) and in all MS patients. However, a lesion in the CC was detected in only 3 FD patients (2.9%) and in 106 MS patients (90.6%). In the FD subgroup with neurological symptoms, WMLs were present in 26 of 37 patients (70.3%), with two subjects (5.4%) showing a definite callosal lesion.
CONCLUSION:
FD patients have a very low incidence of CC involvement on conventional MR images compared to MS, independently from the clinical presentation and the overall degree of WM involvement. Evaluating the presence of CC lesions on brain MR scans can be used as a radiological sign for a differential diagnosis between MS and FD, rapidly addressing the physician toward a correct diagnosis and subsequent treatment options
Determinants of Deep Gray Matter Atrophy in Multiple Sclerosis: A Multimodal MRI Study
Deep gray matter involvement is a consistent feature in multiple sclerosis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between different deep gray matter alterations and the development of subcortical atrophy, as well as to investigate the possible different substrates of volume loss between phenotypes. Seventy-seven patients with MS (52 with relapsing-remitting and 25 with progressive MS) and 41 healthy controls were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. MR imaging investigation included volumetric, DTI, PWI and Quantitative Susceptibility Mapping analyses. Deep gray matter structures were automatically segmented to obtain volumes and mean values for each MR imaging metric in the thalamus, caudate, putamen, and globus pallidus. Between-group differences were probed by ANCOVA analyses, while the contribution of different MR imaging metrics to deep gray matter atrophy was investigated via hierarchic multiple linear regression models. Patients with MS showed a multifaceted involvement of the thalamus and basal ganglia, with significant atrophy of all deep gray matter structures (P.001). In the relapsing-remitting MS group,WMlesion burden proved to be the main contributor to volume loss for all deep gray matter structures (P .006), with a minor role of local microstructural damage, which, in turn, was the main determinant of deep gray matter atrophy in patients with progressive MS (P .01), coupled with thalamic susceptibility changes (P .05). Our study confirms the diffuse involvement of deep gray matter in MS, demonstrating a different behavior between MS phenotypes, with subcortical GM atrophy mainly determined by global WM lesion burden in patients with relapsing-remitting MS, while local microstructural damage and susceptibility changes mainly accounted for the development of deep gray matter volume loss in patients with progressive MS
Verification of a low fidelity fast simulation framework through RANS simulations
© 2019, The Author(s). Verification and validation of simulation models are critical steps in engineering. This paper aims at verifying the suitability of reduced order aerodynamic models used in an aeroservoelastic framework designed to analyze the flight dynamics of flexible aircraft, known as the Cranfield Accelerated Aircraft Loads Model. This framework is designed for rapid assessment of aircraft configurations at the conceptual design stage. Therefore, it utilizes or relies on methods that are of relatively low fidelity for high computational speeds, such as modified strip theory coupled with Leishmann–Beddoes unsteady aerodynamic model. Hence, verification against higher order methods is required. Although low fidelity models are widely used for conceptual design and loads assessments, the open literature still lacks a comparison against higher fidelity models. This work focuses on steady-trimmed flight conditions and investigates the effect of aerodynamic wing deformation under such loads on aerodynamic performance. Key limitations of the reduced order models used, namely fuselage and interference effects, are discussed. The reasons for the overall agreement between the two approaches are also outlined

Кинетика восстановления железа при восстановительной плавке рудоугольных окатышей
Исследовано влияние интенсивности теплообмена на кинетику восстановления железа в процессе плавки рудоугольных окатышей. Показано, что с ростом интенсивности теплообмена повышается скорость восстановительных процессов. Вследствие роста коэффициента теплообмена увеличивается глубина восстановленного слоя окатыша, существенно изменяются его структура и химический состав образующейся металлической фазы.Досліджено вплив інтенсивності теплообміну на кінетику відновлення заліза в процесі плавки рудовугільних окатишів. Показано, що при зростанні інтенсивності теплообміну підвищується швидкість відновлювальних процесів. Внаслідок зростання коефіцієнту теплообміну збільшується глибина відновленого шару окатиша, суттєво змінюються його структура та хімічний склад металевої фази, що утворюється.Influence of intensity of heat exchange is investigational on kinetics reduction of iron in the process of melting ore-coal pellets. Subthreshold psychosis in 22q11.2 deletion syndrome: multisite naturalistic study
Nearly one-third of individuals with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS) develop a psychotic disorder during life, most of them by early adulthood. Importantly, a full-blown psychotic episode is usually preceded by subthreshold symptoms. In the current study, 760 participants (aged 6-55 years) with a confirmed hemizygous 22q11.2 microdeletion have been recruited through 10 medical sites worldwide, as part of an international research consortium. Of them, 692 were nonpsychotic and with complete measurement data. Subthreshold psychotic symptoms were assessed using the Structured Interview for Prodromal Syndromes (SIPS). Nearly one-third of participants met criteria for positive subthreshold psychotic symptoms (32.8%), less than 1% qualified for acute positive subthreshold symptoms, and almost a quarter met criteria for negative/disorganized subthreshold symptoms (21.7%). Adolescents and young adults (13-25 years) showed the highest rates of subthreshold psychotic symptoms. Additionally, higher rates of anxiety disorders and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) were found among the study participants with subthreshold psychotic symptoms compared to those without. Full-scale IQ, verbal IQ, and global functioning (GAF) scores were negatively associated with participants' subthreshold psychotic symptoms. This study represents the most comprehensive analysis reported to date on subthreshold psychosis in 22q11.2DS. Novel findings include age-related changes in subthreshold psychotic symptoms and evidence that cognitive deficits are associated with subthreshold psychosis in this population. Future studies should longitudinally follow these symptoms to detect whether and how early identification and treatment of these manifestations can improve long-term outcomes in those that eventually develop a psychotic disorder
Anti-α-enolase Antibodies in Serum from Pediatric Patients Affected by Inflammatory Diseases: Diagnostic and Pathogenetic Insights
Human glycolytic enzyme α-enolase was associated with human diseases and with inflammation. An ELISA test was developed to measure anti-α-enolase AAE IgG and AAE IgA in the serum from patients affected by inflammatory diseases with the purpose to evaluate it as a novel diagnostic marker. 80 healthy blood donors and 194 paediatric patients affected by Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), celiac disease (CD), Crohn's Disease (CrD), hereditary periodic fever (HPF), and PFAPA syndrome were included in the study. HPF patients showed high levels of AAE antibodies, whereas JIA, CD, and CrD presented only partial results. Benign fevers such as PFAPA were almost negative for AAE Abs. These findings suggested that the genetic dysfunction of inflammasome associated with HPF could lead to the formation of AAE Abs that could be used for an early and easy diagnosis
