    Individuals' Rates of Time Preference for Life-Saving Programs in Developing Countries: Results from a Multi-Country Study

    Individuals' time preferences for mortality reductions are measured in six Less Developed Countries in Africa, Eastern Europe, and Asia using the contingent valuation method. The results indicate that individuals' discount factors are much lower than those estimated for a United States sample. Also, respondents' intertemporal preferences for saving lives are characterized by a nonexponential discount function. We conclude that the discounting practices currently used in standard economic analyses of development projects are probably poor representations of individuals' actual intertemporal preferences.Time preference

    Grain-size trend analysis for the determination of non-biogenic sediment transport pathways on the Kwinte Bank (southern North Sea), in relation to sand dredging

    Grain-size trend analysis is applied to the determination of sediment transport pathways over the Kwinte Bank, southern North Sea; which had been subjected to intensive dredging, within the context of the environmental impact of dredging activities. On the basis of the results of grain-size trend analysis, focused mainly upon the transportation of the non-biogenic sedimentary material (<2 mm), it appears that: (i) there is a main sediment pathway over the western (bank crest) and central (dredged area) part of the bank directed toward the NE; whilst a secondary pathway is established over its eastern gently-sloping flank, having a SE direction. Further, the present analysis shows that the area of the central (dredged) depression acts more as a ‘by-passing’ zone rather than as a depo-centre for the nonbiogenic sediments. Comparison undertaken with the results of an earlier investigation, for a non-dredged area at the northern end of the same bank, reveals that the depression due to dredging modifies significantly the sediment transport pathways; this may be attributed to a change in the seabed morphology which, in turn, modifies the nearbed hydrodynamics (related to tide and/or storm events)

    The synthesis is described of an analogue of the locust CRF-like diuretic peptide in which methionine in positions 1,3, and 13 is replaced by isosteric methyl-homoserine residues. This analogue has been tested for biological activity on Malpighian tubules in vitro, and feeding behavior in vivo. It is highly active in stimulating fluid secretion and accumulation of cAMP in tubules, and on increasing the latency to feed and reducing meal duration. A 15 residue fragment from the C-terminus of the CRF-like peptide, Locmi-DP32–46, is fully active in the feeding assay, but has only weak ability to stimulate the accumulation of cAMP in tubules. Two smaller fragments, Locmi-DP32–37 and Locmi-DP41–46, were tested but neither had consistent biological activity in any of the assays used here. None of the peptides tested have any substantive activity in increasing cGMP in tubules
