The political economy of competitiveness and social mobility
Social mobility has become a mainstream political and media issue in recent years in the United Kingdom. This article suggests that part of the reason for this is that it can serve as a mechanism to discuss policy concerns that appear to be about social justice without questioning important aspects of neo-liberal political economy. The article charts the policy rhetoric on social mobility under both New Labour and the current Coalition Government. It is argued first that under New Labour the apparent commitment to social mobility was in fact subsumed beneath the pursuit of neo-liberal competitiveness, albeit imperfectly realised in policy. Second, the article suggests that under the Coalition Government the commitment to raising levels of social mobility has been retained and the recently published Strategy for Social Mobility promises that social mobility is what the Coalition means when it argues that the austerity programme is balanced with ‘fairness’. Third, however, the Strategy makes clear that the Coalition define social mobility in narrower terms than the previous government. It is argued here that in narrowing the definition the connection with the idea of competitiveness, while still clearly desirable for the Coalition, is weakened. Fourth, a brief analysis of the Coalition's main policy announcements provides little evidence to suggest that even the narrow definition set out in the Strategy is being seriously pursued. Fifth, the international comparative evidence suggests that any strategy aimed at genuinely raising the level of social mobility would need to give much more serious consideration to narrowing levels of inequality. Finally, it is concluded that when considered in the light of the arguments above, the Strategy for Social Mobility – and therefore ‘Fairness’ itself – is merely a discursive legitimation of the wider political economy programme of austerity
Clinical biological and genetic heterogeneity of the inborn errors of pulmonary surfactant metabolism
Pulmonary surfactant is a multimolecular complex located at the air-water interface within the alveolus to which a range of physical (surface-active properties) and immune functions has been assigned. This complex consists of a surface-active lipid layer (consisting mainly of phospholipids), and of an aqueous subphase. From discrete surfactant sub-fractions one can isolate strongly hydrophobic surf acta nt proteins B (SP-B) and C (SP-C) as well as collectins SP-A and SP-D, which were shown to have specific structural, metabolic, or immune properties. Inborn or acquired abnormalities of the surfactant, qualitative or quantitative in nature, account for a number of human diseases. Beside hyaline membrane disease of the preterm neonate, a cluster of hereditary or acquired lung diseases has been characterized by periodic acid-Schiff-positive material filling the alveoli. From this heterogeneous nosologic group, at least two discrete entities presently emerge. The first is the SP-B deficiency, in which an essentially proteinaceous material is stored within the alveoli, and which represents an autosomal recessive Mendelian entity linked to the SFTPB gene (MIM 1786640). The disease usually generally entails neonatal respiratory distress with rapid fatal outcome, although partial or transient deficiencies have also been observed. The second is alveolar proteinosis, characterized by the storage of a mixed protein and lipid material, which constitutes a relatively heterogeneous clinical and biological syndrome, especially with regard to age at onset (from the neonate through to adulthood) as well as the severity of associated signs. Murine models, with a targeted mutation of the gene encoding granulocyte macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) (Csfgm) or the beta subunit of its receptor (II3rb1) support the hypothesis of an abnormality of surfactant turnover in which the alveolar macrophage is a key player. Apart from SP-B deficiency, in which a near-consensus diagnostic chart can be designed, the ascertainment of other abnormalities of surfactant metabolism is not straightforward. The disentanglement of this disease cluster is however essential to propose specific therapeutic procedures: repeated broncho-alveolar ravages, GM-CSF replacement, bone marrow grafting or lung transplantation
Emergent global patterns of ecosystem structure and function from a mechanistic general ecosystem model
Anthropogenic activities are causing widespread degradation of ecosystems worldwide, threatening the ecosystem services upon which all human life depends. Improved understanding of this degradation is urgently needed to improve avoidance and mitigation measures. One tool to assist these efforts is predictive models of ecosystem structure and function that are mechanistic: based on fundamental ecological principles. Here we present the first mechanistic General Ecosystem Model (GEM) of ecosystem structure and function that is both global and applies in all terrestrial and marine environments. Functional forms and parameter values were derived from the theoretical and empirical literature where possible. Simulations of the fate of all organisms with body masses between 10 µg and 150,000 kg (a range of 14 orders of magnitude) across the globe led to emergent properties at individual (e.g., growth rate), community (e.g., biomass turnover rates), ecosystem (e.g., trophic pyramids), and macroecological scales (e.g., global patterns of trophic structure) that are in general agreement with current data and theory. These properties emerged from our encoding of the biology of, and interactions among, individual organisms without any direct constraints on the properties themselves. Our results indicate that ecologists have gathered sufficient information to begin to build realistic, global, and mechanistic models of ecosystems, capable of predicting a diverse range of ecosystem properties and their response to human pressures
Evolutionary connectionism: algorithmic principles underlying the evolution of biological organisation in evo-devo, evo-eco and evolutionary transitions
The mechanisms of variation, selection and inheritance, on which evolution by natural selection depends, are not fixed over evolutionary time. Current evolutionary biology is increasingly focussed on understanding how the evolution of developmental organisations modifies the distribution of phenotypic variation, the evolution of ecological relationships modifies the selective environment, and the evolution of reproductive relationships modifies the heritability of the evolutionary unit. The major transitions in evolution, in particular, involve radical changes in developmental, ecological and reproductive organisations that instantiate variation, selection and inheritance at a higher level of biological organisation. However, current evolutionary theory is poorly equipped to describe how these organisations change over evolutionary time and especially how that results in adaptive complexes at successive scales of organisation (the key problem is that evolution is self-referential, i.e. the products of evolution change the parameters of the evolutionary process). Here we first reinterpret the central open questions in these domains from a perspective that emphasises the common underlying themes. We then synthesise the findings from a developing body of work that is building a new theoretical approach to these questions by converting well-understood theory and results from models of cognitive learning. Specifically, connectionist models of memory and learning demonstrate how simple incremental mechanisms, adjusting the relationships between individually-simple components, can produce organisations that exhibit complex system-level behaviours and improve the adaptive capabilities of the system. We use the term “evolutionary connectionism” to recognise that, by functionally equivalent processes, natural selection acting on the relationships within and between evolutionary entities can result in organisations that produce complex system-level behaviours in evolutionary systems and modify the adaptive capabilities of natural selection over time. We review the evidence supporting the functional equivalences between the domains of learning and of evolution, and discuss the potential for this to resolve conceptual problems in our understanding of the evolution of developmental, ecological and reproductive organisations and, in particular, the major evolutionary transitions
Genome-wide analyses for personality traits identify six genomic loci and show correlations with psychiatric disorders
Personality is influenced by genetic and environmental factors1
and associated with mental health. However, the underlying
genetic determinants are largely unknown. We identified six
genetic loci, including five novel loci2,3, significantly associated
with personality traits in a meta-analysis of genome-wide
association studies (N = 123,132–260,861). Of these genomewide
significant loci, extraversion was associated with variants
in WSCD2 and near PCDH15, and neuroticism with variants
on chromosome 8p23.1 and in L3MBTL2. We performed a
principal component analysis to extract major dimensions
underlying genetic variations among five personality traits
and six psychiatric disorders (N = 5,422–18,759). The first
genetic dimension separated personality traits and psychiatric
disorders, except that neuroticism and openness to experience
were clustered with the disorders. High genetic correlations
were found between extraversion and attention-deficit–
hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and between openness and
schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. The second genetic
dimension was closely aligned with extraversion–introversion
and grouped neuroticism with internalizing psychopathology
(e.g., depression or anxiety)

East London’s Homeless: a retrospective review of an eye clinic for homeless people
Background
There is very little published work on the visual needs of homeless people. This paper is the first study to investigate the visual needs of homeless people in the UK. Although similar work has been done in other countries, this study is unique because the United Kingdom is the only country with a National Health Service which provides free healthcare at the point of access. This study analysed the refractive status of the sample used, determined the demographics of homeless people seeking eye care and established if there is a need for community eye health with access to free spectacle correction in East London.
Methods
This retrospective case study analysed the clinical records of 1,141 homeless people using the Vision Care for Homeless People services at one of their clinics in East London. All eye examinations were carried out by qualified optometrists and, where appropriate, spectacles were dispensed to patients. Data captured included age, gender, ethnicity and refractive error. Results were analysed using two-sample t-tests with Excel and Minitab.
Results
Demographics of age, gender and ethnicity are described. Spherical equivalents (SE) were calculated from prescription data available for 841 clinic users. Emmetropia was defined as SE–0.50DS to +1DS, myopia as SE +1DS.
The majority of clinic users were male (79.2 %, n = 923). Approximately 80 % (n = 583) of clinic users were white, 10 % (n = 72) were ‘black’, 4 % (n = 29) ‘Asian’ and the remaining 5.6 % (n = 40) were of ‘mixed ethnicity’ and ‘other’ groups. The mean age of females attending the clinic was significantly lower than that of males (45.9 years, SD = 13.8 vs’ 48.4 years, SD = 11.8) when analysed using a two-sample t-test (t (317) = 2.44, p = 0.02). One third of service users were aged between 50–59 years. Myopia and hyperopia prevalence rates were 37.0 % and 21.0 % respectively. A total of 34.8 % of homeless people were found to have uncorrected refractive error, and required spectacle correction.
Conclusions
This study has identified a high proportion of uncorrected refractive error in this sample and therefore a need for regular eye examinations and provision of refractive correction for homeless people
Thyroid and pituitary gland development from hatching through metamorphosis of a teleost flatfish, the Atlantic halibut
Fish larval development, not least the spectacular
process of flatfish metamorphosis, appears to be
under complex endocrine control, many aspects of
which are still not fully elucidated. In order to obtain
data on the functional development of two major
endocrine glands, the pituitary and the thyroid, during
flatfish metamorphosis, histology, immunohistochemistry
and in situ hybridization techniques were applied on
larvae of the Atlantic halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus),
a large, marine flatfish species, from hatching
through metamorphosis. The material was obtained
from a commercial hatchery. Larval age is defined as
day-degrees (D =accumulated daily temperature from
hatching). Sporadic thyroid follicles are first detected in
larvae at 142 D (27 days post-hatch), prior to the
completion of yolk sack absorption. Both the number
and activity of the follicles increase markedly after yolk
sack absorption and continue to do so during subsequent
development. The larval triiodothyronine (T3)
and thyroxine (T4) content increases, subsequent to yolk
absorption, and coincides with the proliferation of thyroid
follicles. A second increase of both T3 and T4 occurs
around the start of metamorphosis and the T3 content
further increases at the metamorphic climax. Overall,
the T3 content is lower than T4. The pituitary gland can
first be distinguished as a separate organ at the yolk sack
stage. During subsequent development, the gland becomes
more elongated and differentiates into neurohypophysis (NH), pars distalis (PD) and pars intermedia
(PI). The first sporadic endocrine pituitary cells are observed
at the yolk sack stage, somatotrophs (growth
hormone producing cells) and somatolactotrophs (somatolactin
producing cells) are first observed at 121 D
(23 days post-hatch), and lactotrophs (prolactin producing
cells) at 134 D (25 days post-hatch). Scarce
thyrotrophs are evident after detection of the first thyroid
follicles (142 D ), but coincident with a phase in
which follicle number and activity increase (260 D ).
The somatotrophs are clustered in the medium ventral
region of the PD, lactotrophs in the anterior part of the
PD and somatolactotrophs are scattered in the mid and
posterior region of the pituitary. At around 600 D ,
coinciding with the start of metamorphosis, somatolactotrophs
are restricted to the interdigitating tissue of the
NH. During larval development, the pituitary endocrine
cells become more numerous. The present data on thyroid
development support the notion that thyroid hormones
may play a significant role in Atlantic halibut
metamorphosis. The time of appearance and the subsequent
proliferation of pituitary somatotrophs, lactotrophs,
somatolactotrophs and thyrotrophs indicate at
which stages of larval development and metamorphosis
these endocrine cells may start to play active regulatory
roles.This work has been carried out within the

The effect of disgust-related side-effects on symptoms of depression and anxiety in people treated for cancer: a moderated mediation model
As maladaptive disgust responses are linked to mental health problems, and cancer patients
may experience heightened disgust as a result of treatments they receive, we explored the
associations between disgust-related side-effects and symptoms of depression and anxiety in
people treated for cancer. One hundred and thirty two (83 women, Mage = 57.48 years)
participants answered questions about their treatments, side-effects, disgust responding, and
mental health. Experiencing bowel and/or bladder problems, sickness and/or nausea (referred
to here as “core” disgust-related side-effects) was significantly related to greater symptoms of
depression and borderline increased anxiety. Further, these links were explained by a
moderated mediation model, whereby the effects of core disgust side-effects on depression
and anxiety were mediated by (physical and behavioural) self-directed disgust, and disgust
propensity moderated the effect of core disgust side-effects on self-disgust. These findings
stress the importance of emotional responses, like disgust, in psychological adaptation to the
side-effects of cancer treatments

Detection and attribution of human influence on regional precipitation
Understanding how human influence on climate is affecting precipitation around the world is immensely important for defining mitigation policies, and for adaptation planning. Yet despite increasing evidence for the influence of climate change on global patterns of precipitation, and expectations that significant changes in regional precipitation should have already occurred as a result of human influence on climate, compelling evidence of anthropogenic fingerprints on regional precipitation is obscured by observational and modelling uncertainties and is likely to remain so using current methods for years to come. This is in spite of substantial ongoing improvements in models, new reanalyses and a satellite record that spans over thirty years. If we are to quantify how human-induced climate change is affecting the regional water cycle, we need to consider novel ways of identifying the effects of natural and anthropogenic influences on precipitation that take full advantage of our physical expectations
Genome-wide association for major depression through age at onset stratification
BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a disabling mood disorder, and despite a known heritable component, a large meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies revealed no replicable genetic risk variants. Given prior evidence of heterogeneity by age at onset in MDD, we tested whether genome-wide significant risk variants for MDD could be identified in cases subdivided by age at onset.
METHODS: Discovery case-control genome-wide association studies were performed where cases were stratified using increasing/decreasing age-at-onset cutoffs; significant single nucleotide polymorphisms were tested in nine independent replication samples, giving a total sample of 22,158 cases and 133,749 control subjects for subsetting. Polygenic score analysis was used to examine whether differences in shared genetic risk exists between earlier and adult-onset MDD with commonly comorbid disorders of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, Alzheimer’s disease, and coronary artery disease.
RESULTS: We identified one replicated genome-wide significant locus associated with adult-onset (>27 years) MDD (rs7647854, odds ratio: 1.16, 95% confidence interval: 1.11–1.21, p = 5.2 × 10-11). Using polygenic score analyses, we show that earlier-onset MDD is genetically more similar to schizophrenia and bipolar disorder than adult-onset MDD.
CONCLUSIONS: We demonstrate that using additional phenotype data previously collected by genetic studies to tackle phenotypic heterogeneity in MDD can successfully lead to the discovery of genetic risk factor despite reduced sample size. Furthermore, our results suggest that the genetic susceptibility to MDD differs between adult- and earlier-onset MDD, with earlier-onset cases having a greater genetic overlap with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder
