This handout lists 11 (eleven) recommended steps to take when writing mass emails for work. Writing and sending out spam emails is a regular requirement of library work but not everyone knows how to do this while still looking professional. North by Northwest : Information literacy at Yukon College and Lakehead University
In Northern communities, isolation is a fact of life and common southern "realities" like high-speed internet, libraries (both public and academic) within driving distance and f2f instruction are not the norm. Due to these factors, online instruction is a core component in northern academic institutions and as such requires a little bit more preparation. As well, another key factor to consider is the diverse student population: First Nations, mature, part-time, first generation university students, and professionals upgrading their credentials. The diverse academic backgrounds of these students makes designing the standard library tutorial a challenge; one size does not fit all in the north. At the same time, this might be the only way that students interact with a librarian so the online environment becomes significant to these students' academic studies (and hopefully success). So how does an academic library with such a variety of students a) reach these students? b) design online tutorials targeting a variety of learning styles? and c) assess whether any of this is working? This session will show you how to take a generic one hour information literacy class and turn it into an online session that will meet the needs of a diverse student population. The presenters will discuss effective pedagogical approaches to online instruction, how to teach specific e-resources and finally how to ensure that the students are actually finding the Library's e-resources and using them effectively and efficiently. This presentation won't focus as much on software, although we will be discussing what we use, it's more about how to use the software to teach InfoLit online effectively. We will conclude with a discussion on how to beta-test your new online approach to Information Literacy Instruction before launching it live for the students. So, come to this session and see how two northern (Ontario and Yukon) librarians are devising new and alternative methods of reaching out to students via a variety of methods and assessing their efforts. How, in fact, we have to examine "every angle" such as mode of delivery, type of student, pedagogical theory, etc. to ensure that we are serving our diverse populations well and contributing to the retention and success of these students
Imaging Transport Resonances in the Quantum Hall Effect
We use a scanning capacitance probe to image transport in the quantum Hall
system. Applying a DC bias voltage to the tip induces a ring-shaped
incompressible strip (IS) in the 2D electron system (2DES) that moves with the
tip. At certain tip positions, short-range disorder in the 2DES creates a
quantum dot island in the IS. These islands enable resonant tunneling across
the IS, enhancing its conductance by more than four orders of magnitude. The
images provide a quantitative measure of disorder and suggest resonant
tunneling as the primary mechanism for transport across ISs.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, submitted to PRL. For movies and additional

Low-frequency oscillations of the Atlantic Ocean meridional overturning circulation in a coupled climate model
International audienceUsing a 3-dimensional climate model of intermediate complexity we show that the overturning circulation of the Atlantic Ocean can vary at multicentennial-to-millennial timescales for present-day boundary conditions. A weak and continuous freshwater input into the Labrador Sea pushes the overturning circulation of the Atlantic Ocean into a bi-stable regime, characterized by phases of active and inactive deep-water formation in the Labrador Sea. In contrast, deep-water formation in the Nordic Seas is active during all phases of the oscillations. The actual timing of the transitions between the two circulation states occurs randomly. The oscillations constitute a 3-dimensional phenomenon and have to be distinguished from low-frequency oscillations seen previously in 2-dimensional models of the ocean. A conceptual model provides further insight into the essential dynamics underlying the oscillations of the large-scale ocean circulation. The model experiments indicate that the coupled climate system can exhibit unforced climate variability at multicentennial-to-millennial timescales that may be of relevance for Holocene and future climate variations
Anyon Condensation and Continuous Topological Phase Transitions in Non-Abelian Fractional Quantum Hall States
We find a series of possible continuous quantum phase transitions between
fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states at the same filling fraction in
two-component quantum Hall systems. These can be driven by tuning the
interlayer tunneling and/or interlayer repulsion. One side of the transition is
the Halperin (p,p,p-3) Abelian two-component state while the other side is the
non-Abelian Z4 parafermion (Read-Rezayi) state. We predict that the transition
is a continuous transition in the 3D Ising class. The critical point is
described by a Z2 gauged Ginzburg-Landau theory. These results have
implications for experiments on two-component systems at \nu = 2/3 and
single-component systems at \nu = 8/3.Comment: 4 pages + ref
The spectral form factor is not self-averaging
The spectral form factor, k(t), is the Fourier transform of the two level
correlation function C(x), which is the averaged probability for finding two
energy levels spaced x mean level spacings apart. The average is over a piece
of the spectrum of width W in the neighborhood of energy E0. An additional
ensemble average is traditionally carried out, as in random matrix theory.
Recently a theoretical calculation of k(t) for a single system, with an energy
average only, found interesting nonuniversal semiclassical effects at times t
approximately unity in units of {Planck's constant) /(mean level spacing). This
is of great interest if k(t) is self-averaging, i.e, if the properties of a
typical member of the ensemble are the same as the ensemble average properties.
We here argue that this is not always the case, and that for many important
systems an ensemble average is essential to see detailed properties of k(t). In
other systems, notably the Riemann zeta function, it is likely possible to see

Tuning the effects of Landau-level mixing on anisotropic transport in quantum Hall systems
Electron-electron interactions in half-filled high Landau levels in
two-dimensional electron gases in a strong perpendicular magnetic field can
lead to states with anisotropic longitudinal resistance. This longitudinal
resitance is generally believed to arise from broken rotational invariance,
which is indicated by charge density wave (CDW) order in Hartree-Fock
calculations. We use the Hartree-Fock approximation to study the influence of
externally tuned Landau level mixing on the formation of interaction induced
states that break rotational invariance in two-dimensional electron and hole
systems. We focus on the situation when there are two non-interacting states in
the vicinity of the Fermi level and construct a Landau theory to study coupled
charge density wave order that can occur as interactions are tuned and the
filling or mixing are varied. We examine in detail a specific example where
mixing is tuned externally through Rashba spin-orbit coupling. We calculate the
phase diagram and find the possibility of ordering involving coupled striped or
triangular charge density waves in the two levels. Our results may be relevant
to recent transport experiments on quantum Hall nematics in which Landau-level
