    The Sum of Its Parts: The Lawyer-Client Relationship in Initial Public Offerings

    This Article examines the impact of the quality of a lawyer\u27s working relationship with his or her client on one of the most important types of capital markets deal in a company\u27s existence: its initial public offering (IPO). Drawing on data from interviews with equity capital markets lawyers at major law firms, and analyzing data from IPOs in the United States registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission between June 1996 and December 2010, this study finds a strong association between several measures of IPO performance and the familiarity between the lead underwriter and its counsel, as measured by the number of times a particular law firm serves as counsel to a managing underwriter within a relatively short time period. Performance is gauged according to a stock\u27s opening day returns, price performance over thirty, sixty, and ninety trading days, correct price revision, litigation rates, and the speed at which deals are completed. I also analyze the relationships between the lawyers for the lead underwriter and the lawyers for the issuer. The analysis shows some benefits from familiarity, albeit generally smaller than those associated with the underwriter-lawyer relationship. In all cases, the positive effects of repeated interaction diminish the further back in time the previous collaborations occurred. To rule out selection and reverse causality, I perform a number of tests using smaller subsets of the data to remove observations that are plausibly selection driven. I also show that the relationships between familiarity and deal quality occur independently of the level of the lawyers\u27 experience. These findings support the conclusion that lawyers\u27 relational skill can positively influence deal outcomes, independent even of substance and process knowledge. I hypothesize that the core advantage of repeated interaction is the formation of more effective lawyer-client team dynamics

    Reproducibility of Automated Voice Range Profiles, a Systematic Literature Review

    Objective: Reliable voice range profiles are of great importance when measuring effects and side effects from surgery affecting voice capacity. Automated recording systems are increasingly used, but the reproducibility of results is uncertain. Our objective was to identify and review the existing literature on test-retest accuracy of the automated voice range profile assessment. Study design: Systematic review. Data sources: PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Library, ComDisDome, Embase, and CINAHL (EBSCO). Methods: We conducted a systematic literature search of six databases from 1983 to 2016. The following keywords were used: phonetogram, voice range profile, and acoustic voice analysis. Inclusion criteria were automated recording procedure, healthy voices, and no intervention between test and retest. Test-retest values concerning fundamental frequency and voice intensity were reviewed. Results: Of 483 abstracts, 231 full-text articles were read, resulting in six articles included in the final results. The studies found high reliability, but data are few and heterogeneous. Conclusion: The reviewed articles generally reported high reliability of the voice range profile, and thus clinical usefulness, but uncertainty remains because of low sample sizes and different procedures for selecting, collecting, and analyzing data. More data are needed, and clinical conclusions must be drawn with caution.</p

    Halide: a language and compiler for optimizing parallelism, locality, and recomputation in image processing pipelines

    Image processing pipelines combine the challenges of stencil computations and stream programs. They are composed of large graphs of different stencil stages, as well as complex reductions, and stages with global or data-dependent access patterns. Because of their complex structure, the performance difference between a naive implementation of a pipeline and an optimized one is often an order of magnitude. Efficient implementations require optimization of both parallelism and locality, but due to the nature of stencils, there is a fundamental tension between parallelism, locality, and introducing redundant recomputation of shared values. We present a systematic model of the tradeoff space fundamental to stencil pipelines, a schedule representation which describes concrete points in this space for each stage in an image processing pipeline, and an optimizing compiler for the Halide image processing language that synthesizes high performance implementations from a Halide algorithm and a schedule. Combining this compiler with stochastic search over the space of schedules enables terse, composable programs to achieve state-of-the-art performance on a wide range of real image processing pipelines, and across different hardware architectures, including multicores with SIMD, and heterogeneous CPU+GPU execution. From simple Halide programs written in a few hours, we demonstrate performance up to 5x faster than hand-tuned C, intrinsics, and CUDA implementations optimized by experts over weeks or months, for image processing applications beyond the reach of past automatic compilers.United States.     Designing hollow nano gold golf balls.

    Hollow/porous nanoparticles, including nanocarriers, nanoshells, and mesoporous materials have applications in catalysis, photonics, biosensing, and delivery of theranostic agents. Using a hierarchical template synthesis scheme, we have synthesized a nanocarrier mimicking a golf ball, consisting of (i) solid silica core with a pitted gold surface and (ii) a hollow/porous gold shell without silica. The template consisted of 100 nm polystyrene beads attached to a larger silica core. Selective gold plating of the core followed by removal of the polystyrene beads produced a golf ball-like nanostructure with 100 nm pits. Dissolution of the silica core produced a hollow/porous golf ball-like nanostructure

    "Training as against Doing": Teaching the Language of Development at the Saudi Institute of Public Administration

    This report observes the activities of the Ford Foundation in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (1962 to 1972), which officially proceeded under the auspices of "administrative reform," and the contract logics by which it delivered such assistance. The Ford Foundation's efforts to reorganize and staff the newly established Saudi bureaucracy were considered a preliminary step within a larger endeavor to raise the capacity of the Kingdom's human resources - simultaneously understood to be both the targets and means of national development. At this time, economic development in the Middle East was bundled with programming across public administration, education, and agricultural projects, and emphasized training as a primary investment in the capacity to modernize both national economies and individual subjectivities. The nationals of countries classified as "less developed" were thus the focal subjects -- and objects -- of development assistance, which affirmed a conceit held by Ford Foundation experts that the implementation of development plans must be undertaken by a client government's own manpower, also developing as it were. In the interest of cultivating the government employee base necessary to bring about administrative reform in Saudi Arabia, the Ford Foundation proposed (in 1964) and helped to coordinate (beginning in 1965) an English Language Program designed for Saudi civil servants from within the Kingdom's Institute of Public Administration. It carefully supervised the recruitment and staffing of this program, which was executed through an "unusually complex" arrangement of subcontracts with other non-Saudi organizations. Correspondences and reports related to this program populate the records filed under the Ford Foundation grant 06290135 and they indicate the Foundation's considerable focus on training, amid its concurrent, far-reaching advisory efforts in Saudi Arabia
