Harvesting Entities from the Web Using Unique Identifiers -- IBEX
In this paper we study the prevalence of unique entity identifiers on the
Web. These are, e.g., ISBNs (for books), GTINs (for commercial products), DOIs
(for documents), email addresses, and others. We show how these identifiers can
be harvested systematically from Web pages, and how they can be associated with
human-readable names for the entities at large scale.
Starting with a simple extraction of identifiers and names from Web pages, we
show how we can use the properties of unique identifiers to filter out noise
and clean up the extraction result on the entire corpus. The end result is a
database of millions of uniquely identified entities of different types, with
an accuracy of 73--96% and a very high coverage compared to existing knowledge
bases. We use this database to compute novel statistics on the presence of

A Frequency Comb calibrated Solar Atlas
The solar spectrum is a primary reference for the study of physical processes
in stars and their variation during activity cycles. In Nov 2010 an experiment
with a prototype of a Laser Frequency Comb (LFC) calibration system was
performed with the HARPS spectrograph of the 3.6m ESO telescope at La Silla
during which high signal-to-noise spectra of the Moon were obtained. We exploit
those Echelle spectra to study the optical integrated solar spectrum . The
DAOSPEC program is used to measure solar line positions through gaussian
fitting in an automatic way. We first apply the LFC solar spectrum to
characterize the CCDs of the HARPS spectrograph. The comparison of the LFC and
Th-Ar calibrated spectra reveals S-type distortions on each order along the
whole spectral range with an amplitude of +/-40 m/s. This confirms the pattern
found by Wilken et al. (2010) on a single order and extends the detection of
the distortions to the whole analyzed region revealing that the precise shape
varies with wavelength. A new data reduction is implemented to deal with CCD
pixel inequalities to obtain a wavelength corrected solar spectrum. By using
this spectrum we provide a new LFC calibrated solar atlas with 400 line
positions in the range of 476-530, and 175 lines in the 534-585 nm range. The
new LFC atlas improves the accuracy of individual lines by a significant factor
reaching a mean value of about 10 m/s. The LFC--based solar line wavelengths
are essentially free of major instrumental effects and provide a reference for
absolute solar line positions. We suggest that future LFC observations could be
used to trace small radial velocity changes of the whole solar photospheric
spectrum in connection with the solar cycle and for direct comparison with the
predicted line positions of 3D radiative hydrodynamical models of the solar

Metastable anions of dinitrobenzene: resonances for electron attachment and kinetic energy release
Attachment of free, low-energy electrons to dinitrobenzene (DNB) in the gas phase leads to DNB as well as several fragment anions. DNB, (DNB-H), (DNB-NO), (DNB-2NO), and (DNB-NO(2)) are found to undergo metastable (unimolecular) dissociation. A rich pattern of resonances in the yield of these metastable reactions versus electron energy is observed; some resonances are highly isomer-specific. Most metastable reactions are accompanied by large average kinetic energy releases (KER) that range from 0.5 to 1.32 eV, typical of complex rearrangement reactions, but (1,3-DNB-H)(-) features a resonance with a KER of only 0.06 eV for loss of NO. (1,3-DNB-NO)(-) offers a rare example of a sequential metastable reaction, namely, loss of NO followed by loss of CO to yield C(5)H(4)O(-) with a large KER of 1.32 eV. The G4(MP2) method is applied to compute adiabatic electron affinities and reaction energies for several of the observed metastable channels. (C) 2010 American Institute of Physics. Intrinsic charge transport on the surface of organic semiconductors
The novel technique based on air-gap transistor stamps enabled realization of
the intrinsic (not dominated by static disorder) transport of the
electric-field-induced charge carriers on the surface of rubrene crystals over
a wide temperature range. The signatures of the intrinsic transport are the
anisotropy of the carrier mobility, mu, and the growth of mu with cooling. The
anisotropy of mu vanishes in the activation regime at lower temperatures, where
the charge transport becomes dominated by shallow traps. The deep traps,
deliberately introduced into the crystal by X-ray radiation, increase the
field-effect threshold without affecting the mobility. These traps filled above
the field-effect threshold do not scatter the mobile polaronic carriers.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure
The Sun's position in the sky
We express the position of the Sun in the sky as a function of time and the
observer's geographic coordinates. Our method is based on applying rotation
matrices to vectors describing points on the celestial sphere. We also derive
direct expressions, as functions of date of the year and geographic latitude,
for the duration of daylight, the maximum and minimum altitudes of the Sun, and
the cardinal directions to sunrise and sunset. We discuss how to account for
the eccentricity of the earth's orbit, the precessions of the equinoxes and the
perihelion, the size of the solar disk, and atmospheric refraction. We
illustrate these results by computing the dates of "Manhattanhenge" (when
sunset aligns with the east-west streets on the main traffic grid for
Manhattan, in New York City), by plotting the altitude of the Sun over
representative cities as a function of time, and by showing plots ("analemmas")

PHL 5038: a spatially resolved white dwarf + brown dwarf binary
A near-infrared excess is detected at the white dwarf PHL 5038 in UKIDSS photometry, consistent with the presence of a cool, substellar companion. We have obtained H- and K-grism spectra and images of PHL 5038 using NIRI on Gemini North. The target is spatially and spectrally resolved into two components: an 8000 K DA white dwarf, and a likely L8 brown dwarf companion, separated by 0.94\arcsec. The spectral type of the secondary was determined using standard spectral indices for late L and T dwarfs. The projected orbital separation of the binary is 55 AU, so it becomes only the second known wide WD+dL binary to be found after GD 165AB. This object could potentially be used as a benchmark for testing substellar evolutionary models at intermediate to older ages
Comb-calibrated solar spectroscopy through a multiplexed single-mode fiber channel
We investigate a new scheme for astronomical spectrograph calibration using
the laser frequency comb at the Solar Vacuum Tower Telescope on Tenerife. Our
concept is based upon a single-mode fiber channel, that simultaneously feeds
the spectrograph with comb light and sunlight. This yields nearly perfect
spatial mode matching between the two sources. In combination with the absolute
calibration provided by the frequency comb, this method enables extremely
robust and accurate spectroscopic measurements. The performance of this scheme
is compared to a sequence of alternating comb and sunlight, and to absorption
lines from Earth's atmosphere. We also show how the method can be used for
radial-velocity detection by measuring the well-explored 5-minute oscillations
averaged over the full solar disk. Our method is currently restricted to solar
spectroscopy, but with further evolving fiber-injection techniques it could

Protease inhibitors prevent plasminogen-mediated, but not pemphigus vulgaris-induced, acantholysis in human epidermis
Pemphigus is an autoimmune blistering disease of the skin and mucous membranes. It is caused by autoantibodies directed against desmosomes, which are the principal adhesion structures between epidermal keratinocytes. Binding of autoantibodies leads to the destruction of desmosomes resulting in the loss of cell-cell adhesion (acantholysis) and epidermal blisters. The plasminogen activator system has been implicated as a proteolytic effector in pemphigus. We have tested inhibitors of the plasminogen activator system with regard to their potential to prevent pemphigus-induced cutaneous pathology. In a human split skin culture system, IgG preparations of sera from pemphigus vulgaris patients caused histopathologic changes (acantholysis) similar to those observed in the original pemphigus disease. All inhibitors that were tested (active site inhibitors directed against uPA, tPA, and/or plasmin; antibodies neutralizing the enzymatic activity of uPA or tPA; substances interfering with the binding of uPA to its specific cell surface receptor uPAR) failed to prevent pemphigus vulgaris IgG-mediated acantholysis. Plasminogen-mediated acantholysis, however, was effectively antagonized by the synthetic active site serine protease inhibitor WX-UK1 or by p-aminomethylbenzoic acid. Our data argue against applying anti-plasminogen activator/anti-plasmin strategies in the management of pemphigus
Materials for engine applications above 3000 deg F: An overview
Materials for future generations of aeropropulsion systems will be required to perform at ever-increasing temperatures and have properties superior to the current state of the art. Improved engine efficiency can reduce specific fuel consumption and thus increase range and reduce operating costs. The ultimate payoff gain is expected to come when materials are developed which can perform without cooling at gas temperatures to 2200 C (4000 F). An overview is presented of materials for applications above 1650 C (3000 F), some pertinent physical property data, and the rationale used: (1) to arrive at recommendations of material systems that qualify for further investigation, and (2) to develop a proposed plan of research. From an analysis of available thermochemical data it was included that such materials systems must be composed of oxide ceramics. The required structural integrity will be achieved by developing these materials into fiber-reinforced ceramic composites
The role of the human acetylation polymorphism in the metabolic activation of the food carcinogen 2-amino-3-methylimidazo[4,5-f]quinoline (IQ)
The metabolic activation of the heterocyclic food carcinogen 2-amino-3-methylimidazo[4,5-f]quinoline (IQ) by two human cytochrome P450 monooxygenases (P4501A1 and P4501A2) and two human N-acetyltransferases (NAT1 and NAT2) was investigated. Various combinations of these enzymes were functionally expressed in COS-1 cells. DNA adducts resulting from the activation of IQ were assayed quantitatively by the 32P-postlabeling procedure. The highest adduct frequency was observed in cells expressing both CYP1A2 and NAT2. CYP1A2 in combination with NAT1 was 3-6 times less active. When expressed alone these enzymes gave rise to low adduct frequencies. Experiments with N-acetyl-IQ as substrate suggest that NAT1 and NAT2 in addition to their known role in N-acetylation display arylhydroxamic acid N,O-acetyttransferase (AHAT) activity. Quantitative differences in adduct formation between IQ and N-acetyl-IQ indicated that metabolic activation of these arylamines preferentially occurs by P4501A2-catalyzed N-hydroxylation followed by O-acetylation mediated through NAT1 and/or NAT2. These data, in combination with the known genetic polymorphism of NAT2, may explain the clinical observation that the acetylation polymorphism constitutes a risk factor in the carcinogenic activation of environmental mutagen
