    BACKGROUND: Evidence relating to the effect of asthma on puberty or height is inconclusive. We aimed to examine whether the exposure of childhood asthma, including timing and phenotypes, and inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) use is either cross-sectionally or longitudinally associated with the outcomes of pubertal staging or height. METHODS: This study employed data from a longitudinal, population-based cohort of Swedish children (born 1994-1996). At ages 1, 2, 4, 8, and 12 years, parent-reported data on asthma and ICS use in the previous 12 months were collected. At 8 and 12 years, height was ascertained at a clinical visit, and child-reported, respectively. At 12 years, children answered puberty-related questions. RESULTS: Retention through 12 years was 82% (3366/4089). Participants without puberty data (n = 620) were excluded, yielding a study population of 2746 (67%). Asthma at 8 years, including timing of onset and phenotypes, was not statistically significantly associated with pubertal staging in adjusted models. Children with asthma averaged 0.93 cm (95% CI 0.35-1.50) shorter than children without asthma. Children with asthma using ICS were 1.28 (95% CI 0.62-1.95) shorter than those with asthma without using ICS. CONCLUSIONS: We found no consistent association between asthma and pubertal staging. Children with asthma were shorter than those without asthma. Moreover, children with asthma using ICS were shorter than those not using ICS.NoneAccepte

    Weight, related lifestyle behaviours and asthma in Manitoba children

    Background and Rationale: Asthma and overweight are public health concerns. Lifestyle, including dietary and activity patterns, is associated with overweight and asthma. Moreover, an association between these two diseases has been described. Yet, few studies have considered these associations longitudinally in youth. Methods: Based on data from the 1995 Manitoba Birth Prospective Cohort (n=723, 404 [55.9%] boys), we designed a series of studies to address the question: “Do obesity and related lifestyle behaviours influence asthma and airway hyperresponsivess (AHR) outcomes in children?” Following protocol for a mixed methods sequential explanatory design study, we first considered this research question using quantitative methods. Exposure variables included weight status (body mass index (BMI); BMI z-scores; normal weight vs. overweight), diet, physical activity and screen time. Outcome variables included asthma and AHR at 8-10 years old and at 12-13 years old. Quantitative findings provided direction for the qualitative investigations. That is, we sought to further explain some of the quantitative findings using qualitative methods. For the qualitative portion of this dissertation, 15-16 year old youth were purposively selected (Winnipeg residency, asthma status, gender) from the 1995 Manitoba Prospective Birth Cohort. Due to recruitment challenges, participation was supplemented with youth from the Canadian Asthma Primary Prevention Study, using the same purposive selection criteria. Quantitative Results: Overweight at 12-13 years old was associated with a two-fold increased odds of persistent asthma in girls. In contrast, boys within the highest BMI quartile at 8-10 years old were nearly twice as likely to have remittent asthma at 12-13 years old. High vegetable intake was protective against allergic asthma and moderate-to-severe AHR by 50% and 42%, respectively. High screen time at 8-10 years old, particularly amongst overweight youth, was associated with an increased odds of asthma, but not AHR at 8-10 years and 12-13 years; there were no associations between physical activity, asthma and AHR. Qualitative Results: Youth spoke of asthma as a condition that neither limits physical activity, nor is an excuse for refraining from physical activity. Conclusions: Modest evidence that some quantitatively-measured weight and related lifestyle behaviours during the pubertal years is associated with asthma. Yet, qualitative data suggest that youth with asthma believe that physical activity is achievable despite their condition, although some describe that asthma interferes with physical activity.February 201

    Introduction: The shift to remote working/learning to slow transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 virus has had widespread mental health impacts. We aimed to describe how the COVID-19 pandemic impacted the mental health of students and faculty within a health sciences faculty at a central Canadian university. Methods: Via an online survey, we queried mental health in the first four months of the COVID-19 pandemic quantitatively (scale: 1 (most negative)-100 (most positive)) and qualitatively. Results: The sample (n = 110) was predominantly women (faculty 39/59; [66.1%]; students 46/50; [92.0%]). Most faculty were married/common law (50/60; [84.8%]) and had children at home (36/60; [60.0%]); the opposite was true for most students.  Faculty and students self-reported comparable mental health (40.47±24.26 and 37.62±26.13; respectively). Amongst women, those with vs. without children at home, reported significantly worse mental health impacts (31.78±23.68 vs. 44.29±27.98; respectively, p = 0.032). Qualitative themes included: “Sharing resources,” “spending money,” “few changes,” for those without children at home; “working at home can be isolating,” including the subtheme, “balancing act”: “working in isolation,” “working more,” for those with children at home. Discussion: Amongst women in academia, including both students and faculty, those with children at home have disproportionately worse mental health than those without children at home.Introduction : Le virage vers le travail et l’enseignement à distance pour ralentir la transmission du virus SRAS-CoV-2 a eu des répercussions étendues sur la santé mentale. Notre étude vise à décrie l’impact de la pandémie de la COVID-19 sur la santé mentale des étudiants et du corps professoral au sein Faculté des sciences de la santé d’une université du centre du Canada. Méthodes : Un questionnaire en ligne a été administré pour récolter des données qualitatives et quantitatives (échelle : de 1 [le plus négatif] à 100 [le plus positif] à l’égard de la santé mentale des participants au cours des quatre premiers mois de la pandémie. Résultats : L’échantillonnage (n = 110) était majoritairement composé de femmes (membres du corps professoral : 39/59 ou 66,1 %; étudiantes 46/50 ou 92,0 %). La plupart des répondants du corps professoral étaient mariés ou en union libre (50/60 ou 84,8 %) et avaient des enfants à la maison (36/60 ou 60,0 %). Le contraire était vrai pour la plupart des étudiants. L’état de santé mentale déclaré par le corps professoral et les étudiants était comparable (40,47±24,26 et 37,62±26,13 respectivement). Parmi les femmes, autant celles qui avaient des enfants à la maison que celles qui n’en avaient pas, ont déclaré que leur santé mentale était nettement moins bonne (31,78±23,68 contre 44,29±27,98 respectivement; p = 0,032). Pendant l’analyse des données qualitatives, on a identifié les thèmes « le partage de ressources », « les dépenses » et « peu de changements » pour les répondants qui n’avaient pas d’enfants à la maison alors que les thème « le télétravail accentue l’isolement », ainsi que lessous-thèmes « maintien de l’équilibre : travailler en isolement’’ et ‘’travailler plus » ont émergé pour ceux qui avaient des enfants à la maison. Discussion : Parmi les femmes œuvrant dans le milieu universitaire, qu’elles soient étudiantes ou membres du corps professoral, la santé mentale de celles qui ont des enfants à la maison est davantage affectée que celle des femmes qui n’en ont pas

    Asthma and height in twins : a cohort and within-pair analyses study

    In singletons, asthma may be associated with shorter height and delayed growth during adolescence. Yet, these studies do not account for heritability of asthma, puberty/menarche, and height. We aimed to study the association between asthma and puberty in boys and menarche in girls, and height, in a cohort of twins and subsequently in same-sex twin pairs discordant for asthma. From a Swedish twin cohort, parent- and self-reported data on asthma, puberty/menarche, and height were collected. Pubertal staging was established via the Petersen index. Logistic and linear regression was used to estimate associations between asthma and puberty/menarche and height, respectively. For within-pair analyses in twins discordant for asthma, conditional logistic and linear regression were used. Data on 2,658 (49.1% boys) twins were included. Among boys, asthma prevalence was 8.2% at 8-9 years and 10.2% at 13-14 years. Corresponding numbers for girls were 4.2% and 4.9%, respectively. In the entire cohort, no statistically significant associations were found between current asthma and puberty/menarche. Boys with asthma were shorter than boys without asthma at 8-9 years (on average, 1.86 [0.17-3.56] cm, p = .03) and at 13-14 years (on average, 2.94 [0.98-4.91] cm, p = .003) but not at 19-20 years. No such associations were found for girls. Within same-sex twin pairs discordant for asthma, no statistically significant associations were found for either sex. Twin boys, but not girls, with asthma were shorter than those without asthma. Non-statistically significant estimates from within-pair analyses suggest the association is partly confounded by genetic or familial environmental factors.NoneAccepte
