Moderating the green guilt of marketing : a visual analysis and semiotic review of environmental advertising
Professional project report submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Masters of Arts in Journalism from the School of Journalism, University of Missouri--Columbia.Throughout the research component of my master's professional project, I sought to effectively compare the intended message of environmental advertisements with the understood message of research subjects. The understanding of environmental advertisements was gathered from a combination of visual rhetorical analysis of environmental advertisements and semistructured, photo elicitation interviews of participants from the general population. Participants were chosen randomly through email correspondence with education in the field of advertising as the only negating factor. Participants participated in one-on-one interviews where they were asked to interpret the messages and societal value of nine environmental advertisements. Results showed strong correlation between the visual resources, topic, tone, and emotional appeal of an advertisement with the type of reading on the part of the viewer. Through my research, I hope to expand on the current field of research currently available in the field of social marketing and advertising. With such a small fraction of mass communication promoting healthy behavior and lifestyles, it essential to explore what makes that communication effective.Includes bibliographic references
Looking backward: From Euler to Riemann
We survey the main ideas in the early history of the subjects on which
Riemann worked and that led to some of his most important discoveries. The
subjects discussed include the theory of functions of a complex variable,
elliptic and Abelian integrals, the hypergeometric series, the zeta function,
topology, differential geometry, integration, and the notion of space. We shall
see that among Riemann's predecessors in all these fields, one name occupies a
prominent place, this is Leonhard Euler. The final version of this paper will
appear in the book \emph{From Riemann to differential geometry and relativity}

A symmetry group of a Thue-Morse quasicrystal
We present a method of coding general self-similar structures. In particular,
we construct a symmetry group of a one-dimensional Thue-Morse quasicrystal,
i.e., of a nonperiodic ground state of a certain translation-invariant,
exponentially decaying interaction.Comment: 6 pages, Late
An Assessment of Software Safety as Applied to the Department of Defense Software Development Process
This research analyzed the relationships between the DOD software development process, system safety requirements, and current structured software safety analysis techniques. The current state of software safety was assessed within the aerospace industry and DOD, and a training program for DOD System Safety Managers was developed. A telephone survey was conducted to gather information on current software safety analysis techniques and methodologies. Personal interviews were conducted with Aeronautical System Center System Safety Managers to gather data on job perception and perceived training needs. The results of the study indicate that the DOD guidance and policy documents needed to implement and manage a software safety program are adequate. Software safety programs, however, are not implemented and managed effectively; in addition, structured software safety analysis techniques are not widely used. To improve the DOD\u27s ability to manage weapon system safety programs, DOD should implement the proposed training program
The Influence of Nurses' Attitudes, Beliefs, and Biases Toward Families on Family-Centered Care Delivery in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit: A Grounded Theory

University of Missouri--Kansas City, 2021The purpose of this study was to examine nurses’ attitudes, beliefs, and biases toward families and the influence these views have on the implementation of family-centered care in the neonatal intensive care unit and to uncover social processes underlying practice. Straussian grounded theory method was used to achieve this purpose and develop a substantive theory. Ten registered nurses working at least one shift per week in the NICU were interviewed by phone or Zoom web conference. Data were analyzed using constant comparison methods, leading to the identification of categories, subcategories, and one core category that are integrated into the substantive theory displayed in the model Nurse Appraisal of Families and Resulting Family-Centered Care Practice.Introduction -- Review of literature -- Methodology -- Results -- Discussion -- Appendix A.
