    Modeling of Mass Balance Variability and Its Impact on Water Discharge from the Urumqi Glacier No. 1 Catchment, Tian Shan, China

    Originating in the Tian Shan mountains, Urumqi River plays a key role in terms of water supply to downstream areas. In its headwaters, Urumqi Glacier No. 1 (UG1) is the largest glacier contributing to water discharge. Assessing its response to the changing climatic conditions in the area is of major importance to quantify future water availability. We here apply COSIPY, a COupled Snowpack and Ice surface energy and mass balance model in PYthon, to UG1, implementing a new albedo parameterization which integrates site-specific bare-ice albedo values on a pixel-by-pixel basis observed by remote sensing. We assess model performance threefold: quantitatively based on long-term measurement data of (1) surface mass balance (SMB) and (2) water discharge as well as qualitatively (3) comparing simulated snow line altitudes to such imated on the basis of time-lapse photography. Comparison of the modeled SMB with annually-averaged data from ablation stakes reveals that COSIPY including the new albedo parameterization accounts for 57.6% of the variance observed in the measurements. The original albedo parameterization performs only slightly inferior (57.1%). Glacier-wide comparison between modeled and glaciological SMB shows high agreement. In terms of discharge prediction, COSIPY reproduces onset and duration of the discharge season well. Estimated discharge from the whole catchment shows shortcomings in exactly matching the measured times series, but interannual variability is captured.Peer Reviewe

    Involvement in bullying and sleep disorders in Chinese early adolescents

    BackgroundSchool bullying may cause sleep disorders in early adolescents. Here, we determined the relationship between school bullying (considering all the features of bullying involvement) and sleep disorders, which are the common problems in Chinese early adolescents.Materials and methodsWe conducted a questionnaire survey among 5,724 middle school students from Xuancheng, Hefei, and Huaibei cities in Anhui province, China. The self-report questionnaires included the Olweus Bully/Victim Questionnaire and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. We used latent class analysis to identify the potential subgroups of bullying behavior. Logistic regression analysis was used to investigate the association between school bullying and sleep disorders.ResultsActive participants in bullying interactions, including the bullies and victims, reported higher levels of sleep disorders compared with the non-active participants [Bully: physical (aOR = 2.62), verbal (aOR = 1.73), relational (aOR = 1.80), and cyber (aOR = 2.08); Victim: physical (aOR = 2.42), verbal (aOR = 2.59), relational (aOR = 2.61), and cyber (aOR = 2.81)]. A dose–response relationship was observed between the number of school bullying types and sleep disorders. In the context of bullying roles, bully-victims had the highest risk of reporting sleep disorders (aOR = 3.07, 95% CI: 2.55–3.69). We identified four potential categories of school bullying behaviors: low involvement in bullying, verbal and relational victims, medium bully-victims, and high bully-victims, and the highest frequency of sleep disorders was observed in the high bully-victims group (aOR = 4.12, 95% CI: 2.94–5.76).ConclusionOur findings indicate a positive correlation between bullying roles and sleep disorders in early adolescents. Therefore, targeted intervention for sleep disorders should include an evaluation of bullying experiences

    Analysis of factors associated with abnormal thyroid function among medical staff in radiotherapy departments

    ObjectiveTo understand abnormal thyroid function and its associated factors among medical staff in radiotherapy departments.MethodsData related to medical staff in radiotherapy departments who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were analyzed from September to December 2022 in Shenyang, Liaoning Province, including basic personal and lifestyle habits, work information, and scores on the Depression Self-Assessment Scale, Perception Stress Scale, and the Generalized Anxiety Scale. Data analysis was performed using the χ2 test and binary logistic regression.ResultsAmong 484 medical staff in the radiotherapy department, 147 (30.4%) had abnormal thyroid function. Binary logistic regression analysis showed that age, years of work, smoking, occupational exposure, smoking, late-night snacking habits, depression, and stress perception were factors associated with abnormal thyroid function among medical staff in radiotherapy departments; on the other hand, physical exercise was a protective factor.ConclusionThe positive rate of thyroid dysfunction among medical personnel in the radiology department is relatively high. It is necessary to strengthen health education and awareness among relevant practitioners and improve the coverage of occupational disease prevention and control education

    Creating New Near-Surface Air Temperature Datasets to Understand Elevation-Dependent Warming in the Tibetan Plateau

    The Tibetan Plateau has been undergoing accelerated warming over recent decades, and is considered an indicator for broader global warming phenomena. However, our understanding of warming rates with elevation in complex mountain regions is incomplete. The most serious concern is the lack of high-quality near-surface air temperature (Tair) datasets in these areas. To address this knowledge gap, we developed an automated mapping framework for the estimation of seamless daily minimum and maximum Land Surface Temperatures (LSTs) for the Tibetan Plateau from the existing MODIS LST products for a long period of time (i.e., 2002–present). Specific machine learning methods were developed and linked with target-oriented validation and then applied to convert LST to Tair. Spatial variables in retrieving Tair, such as solar radiation and vegetation indices, were used in estimation of Tair, whereas MODIS LST products were mainly focused on temporal variation in surface air temperature. We validated our process using independent Tair products, revealing more reliable estimates on Tair; the R2 and RMSE at monthly scales generally fell in the range of 0.9–0.95 and 1–2 °C. Using these continuous and consistent Tair datasets, we found temperature increases in the elevation range between 2000–3000 m and 4000–5000 m, whereas the elevation interval at 6000–7000 m exhibits a cooling trend.     Screening of Lignocellulose-Degrading Superior Mushroom Strains and Determination of Their CMCase and Laccase Activity

    In order to screen lignocellulose-degrading superior mushroom strains ten strains of mushrooms (Lentinus edodes939, Pholiota nameko, Lentinus edodes868, Coprinus comatus, Macrolepiota procera, Auricularia auricula, Hericium erinaceus, Grifola frondosa, Pleurotus nebrodensis, and Shiraia bambusicola) were inoculated onto carboxymethylcellulose agar-Congo red plates to evaluate their ability to produce carbomethyl cellulase (CMCase). The results showed that the ratio of transparent circle to mycelium circle of Hericium erinaceus was 8.16 (P<0.01) higher than other strains. The filter paper culture screening test showed that Hericium erinaceus and Macrolepiota procera grew well and showed extreme decomposition of the filter paper. When cultivated in guaiacol culture medium to detect their abilities to secrete laccase, Hericium erinaceus showed the highest ability with the largest reddish brown circles of 4.330 cm. CMCase activity determination indicated that Coprinus comatus and Hericium erinaceus had the ability to produce CMCase with 33.92 U/L on the 9th day and 22.58 U/L on the 10th day, respectively, while Coprinus comatus and Pleurotus nebrodensis had the ability to produce laccase with 496.67 U/L and 489.17 U/L on the 16th day and 18th day. Based on the results, Coprinus comatus might be the most promising lignocellulose-degrading strain to produce both CMCase and laccase at high levels

    Gypenosides Reduced the Risk of Overweight and Insulin Resistance in C57BL/6J Mice through Modulating Adipose Thermogenesis and Gut Microbiota

    This study investigated whether and how gypenosides from jiaogulan tea at 100 and 300 mg/kg/day levels could reduce the development of overweight and insulin resistance in C57 BL/6J mice fed a high-fat diet in 12 weeks. The 300 mg/kg/ day gypenosides supplement significantly reduced final body weight, plasma total cholesterol, and homeostasis model assessment-estimated insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) index by 19.9%, 40%, and 36%, respectively, compared with the high-fat diet control group. Gypenosides also increased brown adipocyte tissue activity and white adipose tissue browning. The expression of genes involved in mitochondrial activity and fatty acid β-oxidation were also increased in both brown and white adipocyte tissues. In addition, gypenosides at 100 and 300 mg/kg/day levels decreased the ratio of Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes by 20% and 58.6%, respectively, and increased Akkermansia muciniphila abundance in the gut microbiota

    Vitamin D and suicidality: a Chinese early adolescent cohort and Mendelian randomization study

    Abstract Aims Previous cross-sectional and case–control studies have proposed that decreased vitamin D levels are positively correlated with the risk of suicidality in adults. However, limited studies have examined the association between vitamin D and suicidality in adolescents. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between serum vitamin D and suicidality risk among early adolescents. Methods Data were obtained from a Chinese early adolescent cohort. In this cohort, seventh-grade students from a middle school in Anhui Province were invited to voluntarily participate in the baseline assessments and provide peripheral blood samples (in September 2019). The participants were followed up annually (in September 2020 and September 2021). Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] and vitamin D–related single-nucleotide polymorphisms at baseline were measured in November 2021. Traditional observational and Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses were performed to examine the relationship between serum 25(OH)D at baseline and the risk of baseline and incident suicidality (i.e., suicidal ideation [SI], plans and attempts). Results Traditional observational analysis did not reveal a significant linear or non-linear association of serum 25(OH)D concentration with the risks of baseline and 2-year incident suicidality in the total sample (P > .05 for all). Sex-stratified analysis revealed a non-linear association between the 25(OH)D concentration and the risk of baseline SI in women (Poverall = .002; Pnon-linear = .001). Moreover, the risk of baseline SI in the 25(OH) insufficiency group was lower than that in the 25(OH) deficiency group in the total sample (odds ratio [OR] = 0.69, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.51–0.92, P = .012). This difference remained significant in women (OR = 0.59, 95% CI = 0.40–0.87, P = .008) but not in men (OR = 0.78, 95% CI = 0.53–1.15, P = .205). Additionally, both linear and non-linear MR analyses did not support the causal effect of serum 25(OH)D concentration on the risk of baseline, 1-year and 2-year incident suicidality (P > .05 for all). Conclusions This study could not confirm the causal effect of vitamin D on suicidality risk among Chinese early adolescents. Future studies must confirm these findings with a large sample size

    Network disruption based on multi-modal EEG-MRI in α-synucleinopathies

    BackgroundBrain network dysfunction has been characterized by resting-state electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the prodromal stage. This study aimed to identify multi-modal electrophysiological and neuroimaging biomarkers for differential diagnosis in synucleinopathies and phenoconversion in isolated rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (iRBD).MethodsWe enrolled 35 patients with multiple system atrophy (MSA), 32 with Parkinson's disease (PD), 30 with iRBD and 30 matched healthy controls (HC). Power spectral density (PSD) was calculated in different frequency bands. EEG functional connectivity (FC) was calculated using the weighted Phase Lag Index (wPLI) after source localization. Significant network disruptions were further confirmed by MRI FC analysis.ResultsQuantitative EEG analysis demonstrated that delta and theta power spectral density significantly differed among MSA, PD and HC. The increased PSD was correlated with cognitive decline and olfactory dysfunction in PD. Band-specific FC profiles were observed in theta, alpha, and gamma bands. The hypoconnected alpha network significantly correlated with motor dysfunction, while the gamma FC distinguished PD from MSA. By integrating EEG and MRI network analyses, we found that FC between the olfactory cortex and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex was significantly different between MSA and PD. A multimodal discriminative model for MSA and PD, integrating spectral and FC attributes of EEG and MRI, yielded an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.900. Simultaneously, we found the FC abnormalities were more prominent than spectral features in iRBD indicating prodromal dysfunction. The decreased FC between the angular gyrus and striatum was identified in α-synucleinopathies. This hypoconnectivity was associated with dopaminergic degeneration in iRBD examined by dopamine transporter imaging.DiscussionOur study demonstrated EEG spectral and functional profiles in prodromal and clinical-defined synucleinopathies. Multimodal EEG and MRI provided a novel approach to discriminate MSA and PD, and monitor neurodegenerative progression in the preclinical phase

    Abstract. Qingbingtan Glacier No. 72 in Mt. Tomor region is a small cirque-valley glacier with complex topography and debris-covered areas. Investigating its variation process will provide meaningful information for understanding the response of debris-covered glaciers existing broadly to climate change. The glacier accumulation area is characterized by receiving large amounts of precipitation and experiencing frequent snow/ice avalanches; temperature and flow regimes are analogous to a temperate or a monsoonal maritime glacier. Data from in-situ observations since 2008 and digitized earlier maps indicate the glacier has been in retreat and experienced thinning during the past 50 years. Between 1964 and 2008, its terminus retreat was 41 m a−1, area reduction was 0.034 km2 a−1, and its thickness decreased at an average rate of 0.6 m a−1 in the ablation area. With the melting enhancing, the proportion of the debris-covered area and thickness increased as well as inhibition of debris cover to melting. Thus, despite the persistent atmospheric warming during the last several decades, the strongest ablation and most significant terminus retreat and area reduction of the glacier occurred at the end of the last century and the beginning of this century rather than in most recent years. Based on a comprehensive analysis of climate change, glacier response delay, glacial topographic features and debris-cover influence, the glacier will continue to retreat in the upcoming decades, yet with a gradually decreasing speed. Then it will stabilize after its terminus retreats to an elevation of approximately 4000 m a.s.l. </jats:p

    Surface Albedo and Snowline Altitude Estimation Using Optical Satellite Imagery and In Situ Measurements in Muz Taw Glacier, Sawir Mountains

    Glacier surface albedo strongly affects glacier mass balance by controlling the glacier surface energy budget. As an indicator of the equilibrium line altitude (ELA), the glacier snowline altitude (SLA) at the end of the melt season can reflect variations in the glacier mass balance. Therefore, it is extremely crucial to investigate the changes of glacier surface albedo and glacier SLA for calculating and evaluating glacier mass loss. In this study, from 2011 to 2021, the surface albedo of the Muz Taw Glacier was derived from Landsat images with a spatial resolution of 30 m and from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer albedo products (MOD10A1) with a temporal resolution of 1 day, which was verified through the albedo measured by the Automatic Weather Station (AWS) installed in the glacier. Moreover, the glacier SLA was determined based on the variation in the surface albedo, with the altitude change along the glacier main flowline derived from the Landsat image at the end of the melt season. The correlation coefficient of >0.7, with a risk of error lower than 5%, between the surface albedo retrieved from remote sensing images and the in situ measurement data indicated that the method of deriving the glacier surface albedo by the remote sensing method was reliable. The annual average albedo showed a slight upward trend (0.24%) from 2011 to 2021. A unimodal seasonal variation in albedo was demonstrated, with the downward trend from January to August and the upward trend from August to December. The spatial distribution of the albedo was not entirely dependent on altitude due to the dramatic effects of the topography and glacier surface conditions. The average SLA was 3446 m a.s.l., with a variation of 160 m from 2011 to 2021. The correlation analysis between the glacier SLA and annual mean temperature/annual precipitation demonstrated that the variations of the average SLA on the Muz Taw Glacier was primarily affected by the air temperature.
