Impact Of Construction And Reclamation Activities On The Water Quality Of The Thane Creek, Central-West Coast Of India
Degradation of natural resources is a major environmental issue the world is currently facing. Estuaries, creeks and coastal water ecosystems are such natural resources that are important as breeding and feeding grounds for fishes and crustaceans. Human activities and alterations made by reclamation have had an adverse effect on their ecology. Due to this, water quality management in these ecosystems has become a necessity. Regular studies of the hydrological parameters are essential for this purpose, as they can assess the status of pollution and help in deciding the mitigation strategy.
Water quality of 26 km stretch of Thane creek, central-west coast of India was analyzed in 5 regions of the creek from May 1999 to April 2000. The study revealed spatial and temporal patterns. Heavy suspended solid load (avg. 5.736 gm/L), frequent hypoxia (DO<2.5 mg/L) coupled with excess nutrients like Phosphate-Phosphorus (avg. 0.26 mg/L) and Nitrate-Nitrogen (avg. 0.96 mg/L) were the main features of the creek.
The Thane city region showed more deterioration of water quality compared to the other regions in the creek. In this region the suspended solid load showed an increase of 713.69% and dissolved oxygen decreased by 21.55% compared to the data of 1992-93. This can be attributed to the severe onslaught of activities in this region like solid waste dumping, construction of 3 new bridges, etc. since 1993, thereby affecting the flushing characteristic. Hence in order to protect and preserve such ecosystems, alterations to the environment should be meticulously planned
Dashbell: A Low-cost Smart Doorbell System for Home Use
Smart doorbells allow home owners to receive alerts when a visitor is at the
door, see who the guest is, and communicate with the visitor from a smart
device. They greatly improve people's life quality and contribute to the
evolution of smart homes. However, the commercial smart doorbells are quite
expensive, usually cost more than 190 US dollars, which is a substantial
impediment on the pervasiveness of smart doorbells. To solve this problem, we
introduce the Dashbell-a budget smart doorbell system for home use. It connects
a WiFi-enabled device, the Amazon Dash Button, to a network and enables the
home owner to answer the bell triggered by the dash button using a smartphone.
The Dashbell system also enables fast fault detection and diagnosis due to its
distributed framework.Comment: Accepted by IEEE PerCom 201
Carving out new business models in a small company through contextual ambidexterity: the case of a sustainable company
Business model innovation (BMI) and organizational ambidexterity have been pointed out as mechanisms for companies achieving sustainability. However, especially considering small and medium enterprises (SMEs), there is a lack of studies demonstrating how to combine these mechanisms. Tackling such a gap, this study seeks to understand how SMEs can ambidextrously manage BMI. Our aim is to provide a practical artifact, accessible to SMEs, to operationalize BMI through organizational ambidexterity. To this end, we conducted our study under the design science research to, first, build an artifact for operationalizing contextual ambidexterity for business model innovation. Then, we used an in-depth case study with a vegan fashion small e-commerce to evaluate the practical outcomes of the artifact. Our findings show that the company improves its business model while, at the same time, designs a new business model and monetizes it. Thus, our approach was able to take the first steps in the direction of operationalizing contextual ambidexterity for business model innovation in small and medium enterprises, democratizing the concept. We contribute to theory by connecting different literature strands and to practice by creating an artifact to assist managemen
Partial actions of weak Hopf algebras: smash products, globalization and Morita theory
In this paper we introduce the notion of partial action of a weak Hopf
algebra on algebras, unifying the notions of partial group action [11], partial
Hopf action ([2],[3],[9]) and partial groupoid action [4]. We construct the
fundamental tools to develop this new subject, namely, the partial smash
product and the globalization of a partial action, as well as, we establish a
connection between partial and global smash products via the construction of a
surjective Morita context. In particular, in the case that the globalization is
unital, these smash products are Morita equivalent. We show that there is a
bijective correspondence between globalizable partial groupoid actions and
symmetric partial groupoid algebra actions, extending similar result for group
actions [9]. Moreover, as an application we give a complete description of all
partial actions of a weak Hopf algebra on its ground field, which suggests a
method to construct more general examples.Comment: 27 page
