Variational Trajectory Optimization Tool Set: Technical description and user's manual
The algorithms that comprise the Variational Trajectory Optimization Tool Set (VTOTS) package are briefly described. The VTOTS is a software package for solving nonlinear constrained optimal control problems from a wide range of engineering and scientific disciplines. The VTOTS package was specifically designed to minimize the amount of user programming; in fact, for problems that may be expressed in terms of analytical functions, the user needs only to define the problem in terms of symbolic variables. This version of the VTOTS does not support tabular data; thus, problems must be expressed in terms of analytical functions. The VTOTS package consists of two methods for solving nonlinear optimal control problems: a time-domain finite-element algorithm and a multiple shooting algorithm. These two algorithms, under the VTOTS package, may be run independently or jointly. The finite-element algorithm generates approximate solutions, whereas the shooting algorithm provides a more accurate solution to the optimization problem. A user's manual, some examples with results, and a brief description of the individual subroutines are included
Two-Level Systems in Evaporated Amorphous Silicon
In -beam evaporated amorphous silicon (-Si), the densities of two-level
systems (TLS), and , determined from specific heat
and internal friction measurements, respectively, have been shown to
vary by over three orders of magnitude. Here we show that and
are proportional to each other with a constant of
proportionality that is consistent with the measurement time dependence
proposed by Black and Halperin and does not require the introduction of
additional anomalous TLS. However, and depend strongly
on the atomic density of the film () which depends on both film
thickness and growth temperature suggesting that the -Si structure is
heterogeneous with nanovoids or other lower density regions forming in a dense
amorphous network. A review of literature data shows that this atomic density
dependence is not unique to -Si. These findings suggest that TLS are not
intrinsic to an amorphous network but require a heterogeneous structure to
form
Toward a unified description of hadro- and photoproduction: S-wave pi- and eta-photoproduction amplitudes
The Chew-Mandelstam parameterization, which has been used extensively in the
two-body hadronic sector, is generalized in this exploratory study to the
electromagnetic sector by simultaneous fits to the pion- and
eta-photoproduction S-wave multipole amplitudes for center-of-mass energies
from the pion threshold through 1.61 GeV. We review the Chew-Mandelstam
parameterization in detail to clarify the theoretical content of the SAID
hadronic amplitude analysis and to place the proposed, generalized SAID
electromagnetic amplitudes in the context of earlier employed parameterized
forms. The parameterization is unitary at the two-body level, employing four
hadronic channels and the gamma-N electromagnetic channel. We compare the
resulting fit to the MAID parameterization and find qualitative agreement
though, numerically, the solution is somewhat different. Applications of the
extended parameterization to global fits of the photoproduction data and to

Adolescents care but don't feel responsible for farm animal welfare
Adolescents are the next generation of consumers with the potential to raise standards of farm animal welfare—to theirsatisfaction—if their preferences and concerns are translated into accurate market drivers and signals. There are no published data about adolescent views of farm animal welfare to allow meaningful design, implementation, and evaluation of educational strategies to improve consideration of—and behavior toward—farm animals. Knowledge of farm animal welfare, as well as beliefs and attitudes about farm animal welfare and behavioral intention relevant to it were determined in a sample of ukadolescents, using a survey incorporating an extended version of the theory of planned behavior and novel assessment tools. Our results indicate that adolescents have only a limited knowledge of welfare problems for farm animals and welfare-relevant product labels. Intentions to identify welfare standards for the animals from whom their food was derived were weak. Although they cared about farm animal welfare and agreed with fundamental principles—for example, the provision of space and the absence of pain and suffering—like adults they held limited belief in the power and responsibility that they possess through their choices as consumers; responsibility was often shifted to others, such as the government and farmers
Timing of HIV Seroreversion Among HIV-Exposed, Breastfed Infants in Malawi: Type of HIV Rapid Test Matters
Introduction Rapid HIV serological tests are a cost-effective, point-of-care test among HIV exposed infants but cannot distinguish between maternal and infant antibodies. The lack of data on the timing of decay of maternal antibodies in young infants hinders the potential use of rapid tests in exposed infants. We aimed to determine the time to seroreversion for two commonly used rapid tests in a prospective cohort of HIV-exposed breastfeeding infants ages 3-18 months of life. Methods We collected data on the performance of two commonly used rapid tests (Determine and Unigold) in Malawi between 2008 and 2012 or at the University of North Carolina between 2014 and 2015. Time to seroreversion was estimated for both rapid tests using the Kaplan-Meier product limit estimator which allows for interval censored data. Results At 3 months of age, 3 % of infants had seroreverted according to Determine and 7 % had seroreverted according to Unigold. About one in four infants had achieved seroreversion by 4 months using Unigold, but only about one in twelve infants by 4 months when using Determine. More than 95 % of all infants had seroverted by 7 months according to Unigold and by 12 months according to the Determine assay. Discussion We show that the time of seroreversion depends greatly on the type of test used. Our results highlight the need for recommendations to specify the timing and type of test used in the context of infant HIV detection in resource-poor settings, and base the interpretation of test result on knowledge of time to seroreversion of the selected test

Hubble Space Telescope Angular Velocity Estimation During the Robotic Servicing Mission
In 2004 NASA began investigation of a robotic servicing mission for the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Such a mission would require estimates of the HST attitude and rates in order to achieve a capture by the proposed Hubble robotic vehicle (HRV). HRV was to be equipped with vision-based sensors, capable of estimating the relative attitude between HST and HRV. The inertial HST attitude is derived from the measured relative attitude and the HRV computed inertial attitude. However, the relative rate between HST and HRV cannot be measured directly. Therefore, the HST rate with respect to inertial space is not known. Two approaches are developed to estimate the HST rates. Both methods utilize the measured relative attitude and the HRV inertial attitude and rates. First, a non-linear estimator is developed. The nonlinear approach estimates the HST rate through an estimation of the inertial angular momentum. Second, a linearized approach is developed. The linearized approach is a pseudo-linear Kalman filter. Simulation test results for both methods are given. Even though the development began as an application for the HST robotic servicing mission, the methods presented are applicable to any rendezvous/capture mission involving a non-cooperative target spacecraft
On the Relationship between the Uniqueness of the Moonshine Module and Monstrous Moonshine
We consider the relationship between the conjectured uniqueness of the
Moonshine Module, , and Monstrous Moonshine, the genus zero
property of the modular invariance group for each Monster group Thompson
series. We first discuss a family of possible meromorphic orbifold
constructions of based on automorphisms of the Leech
lattice compactified bosonic string. We reproduce the Thompson series for all
51 non-Fricke classes of the Monster group together with a new relationship
between the centralisers of these classes and 51 corresponding Conway group
centralisers (generalising a well-known relationship for 5 such classes).
Assuming that is unique, we then consider meromorphic
orbifoldings of and show that Monstrous Moonshine holds if
and only if the only meromorphic orbifoldings of give
itself or the Leech theory. This constraint on the
meromorphic orbifoldings of therefore relates Monstrous
