Soft-Pulse Dynamical Decoupling with Markovian Decoherence
We consider the effect of broadband decoherence on the performance of
refocusing sequences, having in mind applications of dynamical decoupling in
concatenation with quantum error correcting codes as the first stage of
coherence protection. Specifically, we construct cumulant expansions of
effective decoherence operators for a qubit driven by a pulse of a generic
symmetric shape, and for several sequences of - and -pulses. While,
in general, the performance of soft pulses in decoupling sequences in the
presence of Markovian decoherence is worse than that of the ideal
-pulses, it can be substantially improved by shaping.Comment: New version contains minor content clarification
Th is is a new comprehensive approximation to the study of the act of smoking, incorporating the investigation of the social aspects of smoking and the selection of plants through the collection of direct and indirect information. Ethnohistoric and ethnographic documents were consulted, and we obtained direct evidence through the application of recovery techniques and the analysis of microfossils contained in the residues found in pipes from archaeological sites in the northern semi-arid, central and southern Chile. Furthermore, the social operational chain involved in the action of smoking is an important part of this study, as is reaching wider conclusions, reason for which a new approach has been proposed with the object of understanding the defi nition of Smoking Complex. The preliminary results support this study, with the observation of the differential depositation in the chambers and pipes/mouthpieces (cultural depositation) and sediment (natural depositation). In turn, the study differentiates various categories of microfossils and highlights the presence of starches with characteristics that may be attributed to Nicotiana spp. As a part of this proposal, the sequence of social contents linked to the act of smoking is explained and graphically shownas an operational model.
Neutron Transfer reactions induced by 8Li on 9Be
Angular distributions for the elastic scattering of 8Li on 9Be and the
neutron transfer reactions 9Be(8Li,7Li)10Be and 9Be(8Li,9Li)8Be have been
measured with a 27 MeV 8Li radioactive nuclear beam. Spectroscopic factors for
8Li|n=9Li and 7Li|n=8Li bound systems were obtained from the comparison between
the experimental differential cross section and finite-range DWBA calculations
with the code FRESCO. The spectroscopic factors obtained are compared to shell
model calculations and to other experimental values from (d,p) reactions. Using
the present values for the spectroscopic factor, cross sections for the direct
neutron-capture reactions 7Li(n,g)8Li and 8Li(n,g)9Li were calculated in the
framework of a potential model.Comment: 24 pages, 8 Figures, submitted as regular article to PR
Understanding the hydrological functioning and the interaction among the different water bodies present in a specific area are essential when planning the rational use of the hydric resource. The aim of the present paper is to validate and adjust the conceptual hydrogeological model for a wetland of the Buenos Aires Pampa Plain through hydrochemical and isotopic techniques. La Brava Wetland Basin (53.6 km2) has been selected. La Brava is a shallow and permanent wetland with an area of 4.0 km2 and a maximum depth of 4.57 m. Samples for physicochemical and isotopic analyses were taken from groundwater, the wetland, and in the inflow and outflow streams. A regular grid was designed for the wetland sampling to measure in situ the main physical and chemical parameters at 5 different depths. The chemical composition of the water in the basin is of sodium bicarbonate type. Hydrochemical and isotopic data allowed the confirmation of the effiuent-influent behavior of this wetland. Electrical conductivity analysis in the wetland at different depths shows a possible preferential recharge zone in the contact of the wetland with La Brava Hill, where an important decrease in this parameter was detected. The information obtained indicates that the recharge to the aquifer is influenced by: the rainfall, the wetland discharge, the concentration of surface ron-off from the range fringes to inter-range depressions and water input from the fault system present in the quartzites
Exactly stable non-BPS spinors in heterotic string theory on tori
Considering SO(32) heterotic string theory compactified on a torus of
dimension 4 and less, stability of non-supersymmetric states is studied. A
non-supersymmetric state with robust stability is constructed, and its exact
stability is proven in a large region of moduli space against all the possible
decay mechanisms allowed by charge conservation. Using various T-duality
transform matrices, we translate various selection rules about conserved
charges into simpler problems resembling partition and parity of integers. For
heterotic string on T^4, we give a complete list of BPS atoms with elementary
excitations, and we study BPS and non-BPS molecules with various binding
energies. Using string-string duality, the results are interpreted in terms of
Dirichlet-branes in type IIA string theory compactified on an orbifold limit of
a K3 surface.Comment: 47 pages, 14 figures, LaTe

Dirichlet Branes on Orientifolds
We consider the classification of BPS and non-BPS D-branes in orientifold
models. In particular we construct all stable BPS and non-BPS D-branes in the
Gimon-Polchinski (GP) and Dabholkar-Park-Blum-Zaffaroni (DPBZ) orientifolds and
determine their stability regions in moduli space as well as decay products. We
find several kinds of integrally and torsion charged non-BPS D-branes. Certain
of these are found to have projective representations of the orientifold
GSO group on the Chan-Paton factors. It is found that the GP
orientifold is not described by equivariant orthogonal K-theory as may have
been at first expected. Instead a twisted version of this K-theory is expected
to be relevant.Comment: 33 pages, LaTeX, 5 figures. v2 typos corrected, references included,

Resistance to autosomal dominant Alzheimer's disease in an APOE3 Christchurch homozygote: a case report.
We identified a PSEN1 (presenilin 1) mutation carrier from the world's largest autosomal dominant Alzheimer's disease kindred, who did not develop mild cognitive impairment until her seventies, three decades after the expected age of clinical onset. The individual had two copies of the APOE3 Christchurch (R136S) mutation, unusually high brain amyloid levels and limited tau and neurodegenerative measurements. Our findings have implications for the role of APOE in the pathogenesis, treatment and prevention of Alzheimer's disease
D-Matter
We study the properties and phenomenology of particle-like states originating
from D-branes whose spatial dimensions are all compactified. They are
non-perturbative states in string theory and we refer to them as D-matter. In
contrast to other non-perturbative objects such as 't Hooft-Polyakov monopoles,
D-matter states could have perturbative couplings among themselves and with
ordinary matter. The lightest D-particle (LDP) could be stable because it is
the lightest state carrying certain (integer or discrete) quantum numbers.
Depending on the string scale, they could be cold dark matter candidates with
properties similar to that of wimps or wimpzillas. The spectrum of excited
states of D-matter exhibits an interesting pattern which could be distinguished
from that of Kaluza-Klein modes, winding states, and string resonances. We
speculate about possible signatures of D-matter from ultra-high energy cosmic
rays and colliders.Comment: 25 pages, 5 figures, references adde
