Energy Loss and Flavor Dynamics from Single Particle Measurements in PHENIX
The transverse momentum spectra, yields, and ratios of charged pions,
protons, and antiprotons have been studied up to 5 GeV/c in in 5
different centrality classes in Au+Au collisions at = 200 GeV.
These results are compared and contrasted with the observables calculated in
recombination models of hadronization. They are also used to examine the color

Can CPT Symmetry Be Tested With K^0 vs \bar{K}^0--> \pi^+\pi^-\pi^0 Decays?
We show that the CP-violating effect in K^0 vs \bar K^0-->\pi^+\pi^-\pi^0
decays differs from that in K_{\rm L}-->\pi^+\pi^-, K_{\rm L}-->\pi^0\pi^0 or
the semileptonic K_{\rm L} transitions, if there exists CPT violation in
K^0-\bar{K}^0 mixing. A delicate measurement of this difference in the KTeV
experiment and at the \phi factory will provide a new test of CPT symmetry in

Euler Integration of Gaussian Random Fields and Persistent Homology
In this paper we extend the notion of the Euler characteristic to persistent
homology and give the relationship between the Euler integral of a function and
the Euler characteristic of the function's persistent homology. We then proceed
to compute the expected Euler integral of a Gaussian random field using the
Gaussian kinematic formula and obtain a simple closed form expression. This
results in the first explicitly computable mean of a quantitative descriptor
for the persistent homology of a Gaussian random field.Comment: 21 pages, 1 figur
The Legal, Ethical, and Social Implications of the Reasonable Woman Standard in Sexual Harassment Cases
In this Article, Professors Adler and Peirce examine the development and implications of the reasonable woman standard that is gaining increasing acceptance as the appropriate gauge for measuring the offensiveness of the conduct at issue in sexual harassment cases. The authors begin by reviewing the origins of sexual harassment law under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, paying particular attention to the history of hostile environment causes of action. Professors Adler and Peirce then discuss how and why the reasonable woman standard evolved as an alternative to the conventional reasonable man and reasonable person standards that had been the usual measures of culpable conduct in sexual harassment cases, and how courts have applied the reasonable woman standard in cases involving a wide range of allegedly harassing behaviors. The authors conclude by discussing a variety of important concerns raised by the implementation of the reasonable woman standard, including the fundamental question of whether it is fair to hold men to a standard of conduct that, because they are men, they may be unable to understand or appreciate fully
No Eigenvalue in Finite Quantum Electrodynamics
We re-examine Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) with massless electron as a
finite quantum field theory as advocated by Gell-Mann-Low, Baker-Johnson,
Adler, Jackiw and others. We analyze the Dyson-Schwinger equation satisfied by
the massless electron in finite QED and conclude that the theory admits no
nontrivial eigenvalue for the fine structure constant.Comment: 13 pages, Late

Chemosensory cues are crucial for entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs)-a guild of insect-killing parasitic nematodes that are used as biological control agents against a variety of agricultural pests. Dispersal is an essential element of the EPN life cycle in which newly developed infective juveniles (IJs) emerge and migrate away from a resource-depleted insect cadaver in order to search for new hosts. Emergence and dispersal are complex processes that involve biotic and abiotic factors, however, the elements that result in EPN dispersal behaviors have not been well-studied. Prenol is a simple isoprenoid and a natural alcohol found in association with EPN-infected, resource-depleted insect cadavers, and this odorant has been speculated to play a role in dispersal behavior in EPNs. This hypothesis was tested by evaluating the behavioral responses of five different species of EPNs to prenol both as a distal-chemotactic cue and as a dispersal cue. The results indicate that prenol acted as a repulsive agent for all five species tested, while only two species responded to prenol as a dispersal cue
Topical cyclone rainfall characteristics as determined from a satellite passive microwave radiometer
Data from the Nimbus-5 Electrically Scanning Microwave Radiometer (ESMR-5) were used to calculate latent heat release and other rainfall parameters for over 70 satellite observations of 21 tropical cyclones in the tropical North Pacific Ocean. The results indicate that the ESMR-5 measurements can be useful in determining the rainfall characteristics of these storms and appear to be potentially useful in monitoring as well as predicting their intensity. The ESMR-5 derived total tropical cyclone rainfall estimates agree favorably with previous estimates for both the disturbance and typhoon stages. The mean typhoon rainfall rate (1.9 mm h(-1)) is approximately twice that of disturbances (1.1 mm h(-1))
The role of Lambda in the cosmological lens equation
The cosmological constant Lambda affects cosmological gravitational lensing.
Effects due to Lambda can be studied in the framework of the Schwarzschild-de
Sitter spacetime. Two novel contributions, which can not be accounted for by a
proper use of angular diameter distances, are derived. First, a term 2m b
Lambda/3 has to be added to the bending angle, where "m" is the lens mass and
"b" the impact parameter. Second, Lambda brings about a difference in the
redshifts of multiple images. Both effects are quite small for real
astrophysical systems (contribution to the bending < 0.1 microarcsec and
