Symmetry constraints on the elastoresistivity tensor
The elastoresistivity tensor characterizes changes in a
material's resistivity due to strain. As a fourth-rank tensor,
elastoresistivity can be a uniquely useful probe of the symmetries and
character of the electronic state of a solid. We present a symmetry analysis of
(both in the presence and absence of a magnetic field) based on the
crystalline point group, focusing for pedagogic purposes on the point
group (of relevance to several materials of current interest). We also discuss
the relation between and various thermodynamic susceptibilities,
particularly where they are sensitive to critical fluctuations proximate to a
critical point at which a point group symmetry is spontaneously broken.Comment: 9 pages, 1 figur
Transverse fields to tune an Ising-nematic quantum critical transition
The paradigmatic example of a continuous quantum phase transition is the
transverse field Ising ferromagnet. In contrast to classical critical systems,
whose properties depend only on symmetry and the dimension of space, the nature
of a quantum phase transition also depends on the dynamics. In the transverse
field Ising model, the order parameter is not conserved and increasing the
transverse field enhances quantum fluctuations until they become strong enough
to restore the symmetry of the ground state. Ising pseudo-spins can represent
the order parameter of any system with a two-fold degenerate broken-symmetry
phase, including electronic nematic order associated with spontaneous
point-group symmetry breaking. Here, we show for the representative example of
orbital-nematic ordering of a non-Kramers doublet that an orthogonal strain or
a perpendicular magnetic field plays the role of the transverse field, thereby
providing a practical route for tuning appropriate materials to a quantum
critical point. While the transverse fields are conjugate to seemingly
unrelated order parameters, their non-trivial commutation relations with the
nematic order parameter, which can be represented by a Berry-phase term in an
effective field theory, intrinsically intertwines the different order
parameters.Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures, 2 table
Solar PV and BIPV system: Barrier, challenges and policy recommendation in India
India receives sun's energy over 300 days a year most of the time. About 5000 trillion kWh per year sun's energy is incident over India's land area. Theoretically, a small fraction of total incident solar energy can meet the entire country's power requirements. There are many government schemes to promote solar power generation. The government of India initiated solar PV/BIPV policies to encourage industries and individuals to use solar energy powered systems for electricity generations. This article provides an overview of the solar energy status and application of BIPV system in India. It includes an assessment of the region's solar energy potential and solar PV/BIPV installed capacity. This paper gives a brief description barriers and challenges facing solar BIPV development in India. This study also provides the solar PV/BIPV policies and recommendations with reference to the Indian context
Banded leaf and sheath blight: A menacing disease of maize (Zea mays L.) and its management
Maize (Zea mays L.) crop is attacked by number of fungal, bacterial and viral diseases, out of which banded leaf and sheath blight (BLSB) caused by anastomosis group 1-IA of Rhizoctonia solani f. sp. sasakii Exner. is one of the most widespread and destructive disease of maize in Southeast Asian countries. The occurrence of this disease has also been reported from other parts of the world, which causes significant yield loss up to 100%. R. solani can survive in the soil for several years and able to infect plants belonging to more than 32 families, including many economically important monocots and dicots plants. The severity of the disease favoured by humid weather with temperature around 28°C, poses challenge to maize growers due to its soil borne nature and lack of resistance cultivars. It is indicated that none of the disease management approaches are effective against BLSB. Banded leaf and sheath blight is difficult to control through either fungicide or crop rotation alone. A number of quantitative trait loci (QTLs) controlling BLSB have been identified that would help the development of maize hybrids resistance to this disease. Management of BLSB requires an integrated approach based on the knowledge of each stage of the disease and molecular aspect of maize defence responses against R. solani. Mention conclusion statement and novelty of the work. The present review summarizes consolidated information on distribution, yield loss, symptoms, pathogen life cycle, epidemiology, genetic structure of the pathogen population, molecular aspect of pathogenicity and its integrated management through cultural, biological, chemical and genetic means. The consolidated knowledge presented in this review should help better disease management and reduce crop yield loss due to banded leaf and sheath blight pathogen
