Groundwater in Cretaceous carbonates: KG@B field trip 21st June 2015
The Upper Cretaceous Chalk of southern England is the UK’s most important aquifer, providing
more than 75% of the public supply for southeast England, including London. The aquifer also
sustains rivers and wetlands, and their associated groundwater dependent ecosystems. However,
the aquifer is facing a multitude of threats including over-abstraction, nitrate pollution, and
climate change.
The Chalk is a complex aquifer in which groundwater flow is through the matrix, fractures and
karstic dissolutional voids. The Chalk matrix has a porosity of around 35% (Bloomfield et al.,
1995). The matrix is thought to provide an important contribution to storage, although the size of
the pore throats is very small, and therefore the permeability is very low (Price et al., 1993). The
average permeability of 977 core samples was only 6.3 x 10-4 m/day (Allen et al., 1997). The
matrix is particularly important in solute transport, because solutes move between the matrix and
the more permeable parts of the aquifer via diffusion (Foster 1975). The unmodified fracture
network provides an important contribution to storage and flow, and has a hydraulic conductivity
of about 0.1 m/d, and a transmissivity of about 20 m2/day (Price, 1987). However, it is the
dissolutionally enlarged fissures and conduits that make the Chalk such a good aquifer. The
median transmissivity from 2100 pumping tests is 540 m2/day, and the 25th and 75th percentiles
are 190 and 1500 m2/day respectively (MacDonald and Allen, 2001). Borehole packer testing,
logging and imaging have shown that most of this transmissivity comes from a small number of
dissolutional voids (e.g. Tate et al., 1970; Schurch and Buckley, 2002). Laterally extensive
lithostratigraphical horizons including marl seams, bedding planes, sheet and tabular flint bands,
and hard-grounds have an important influence on these groundwater flows. They are all horizons
where downward percolation of water may be impeded. Dissolution often occurs where flow is
concentrated along these horizons, creating conduits or fissures, especially where they are
intersected by joint sets
Improved fidelity of triggered entangled photons from single quantum dots
We demonstrate the on-demand emission of polarisation-entangled photon pairs
from the biexciton cascade of a single InAs quantum dot embedded in a GaAs/AlAs
planar microcavity. Improvements in the sample design blue shifts the wetting
layer to reduce the contribution of background light in the measurements.
Results presented show that >70% of the detected photon pairs are entangled.
The high fidelity of the (|HxxHx>+|VxxVx>)/2^0.5 state that we determine is
sufficient to satisfy numerous tests for entanglement. The improved quality of
entanglement represents a significant step towards the realisation of a
practical quantum dot source compatible with applications in quantum

Primary Beam and Dish Surface Characterization at the Allen Telescope Array by Radio Holography
The Allen Telescope Array (ATA) is a cm-wave interferometer in California,
comprising 42 antenna elements with 6-m diameter dishes. We characterize the
antenna optical accuracy using two-antenna interferometry and radio holography.
The distortion of each telescope relative to the average is small, with RMS
differences of 1 percent of beam peak value. Holography provides images of dish
illumination pattern, allowing characterization of as-built mirror surfaces.
The ATA dishes can experience mm-scale distortions across -2 meter lengths due
to mounting stresses or solar radiation. Experimental RMS errors are 0.7 mm at
night and 3 mm under worst case solar illumination. For frequencies 4, 10, and
15 GHz, the nighttime values indicate sensitivity losses of 1, 10 and 20
percent, respectively. The ATA.s exceptional wide-bandwidth permits
observations over a continuous range 0.5 to 11.2 GHz, and future retrofits may
increase this range to 15 GHz. Beam patterns show a slowly varying focus
frequency dependence. We probe the antenna optical gain and beam pattern
stability as a function of focus and observation frequency, concluding that ATA
can produce high fidelity images over a decade of simultaneous observation
frequencies. In the day, the antenna sensitivity and pointing accuracy are
affected. We find that at frequencies greater than 5 GHz, daytime observations
greater than 5 GHz will suffer some sensitivity loss and it may be necessary to

Antithymocyte Globulin Plus G-CSF Combination Therapy Leads to Sustained Immunomodulatory and Metabolic Effects in a Subset of Responders With Established Type 1 Diabetes.
Low-dose antithymocyte globulin (ATG) plus pegylated granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) preserves β-cell function for at least 12 months in type 1 diabetes. Herein, we describe metabolic and immunological parameters 24 months following treatment. Patients with established type 1 diabetes (duration 4-24 months) were randomized to ATG and pegylated G-CSF (ATG+G-CSF) (N = 17) or placebo (N = 8). Primary outcomes included C-peptide area under the curve (AUC) following a mixed-meal tolerance test (MMTT) and flow cytometry. "Responders" (12-month C-peptide ≥ baseline), "super responders" (24-month C-peptide ≥ baseline), and "nonresponders" (12-month C-peptide < baseline) were evaluated for biomarkers of outcome. At 24 months, MMTT-stimulated AUC C-peptide was not significantly different in ATG+G-CSF (0.49 nmol/L/min) versus placebo (0.29 nmol/L/min). Subjects treated with ATG+G-CSF demonstrated reduced CD4+ T cells and CD4+/CD8+ T-cell ratio and increased CD16+CD56hi natural killer cells (NK), CD4+ effector memory T cells (Tem), CD4+PD-1+ central memory T cells (Tcm), Tcm PD-1 expression, and neutrophils. FOXP3+Helios+ regulatory T cells (Treg) were elevated in ATG+G-CSF subjects at 6, 12, and 18 but not 24 months. Immunophenotyping identified differential HLA-DR expression on monocytes and NK and altered CXCR3 and PD-1 expression on T-cell subsets. As such, a group of metabolic and immunological responders was identified. A phase II study of ATG+G-CSF in patients with new-onset type 1 diabetes is ongoing and may support ATG+G-CSF as a prevention strategy in high-risk subjects
Discovery of Novel Materials with Broad Resistance to Bacterial Attachment Using Combinatorial Polymer Microarrays
A new class of bacteria-attachment-resistant materials is discovered using a multi-generation polymer microarray methodology that reduces bacterial attachment by up to 99.3% compared with a leading commercially available silver hydrogel anti-bacterial material. The Allen Telescope Array Pi GHz Sky Survey I. Survey Description and Static Catalog Results for the Bootes Field
The Pi GHz Sky Survey (PiGSS) is a key project of the Allen Telescope Array.
PiGSS is a 3.1 GHz survey of radio continuum emission in the extragalactic sky
with an emphasis on synoptic observations that measure the static and
time-variable properties of the sky. During the 2.5-year campaign, PiGSS will
twice observe ~250,000 radio sources in the 10,000 deg^2 region of the sky with
b > 30 deg to an rms sensitivity of ~1 mJy. Additionally, sub-regions of the
sky will be observed multiple times to characterize variability on time scales
of days to years. We present here observations of a 10 deg^2 region in the
Bootes constellation overlapping the NOAO Deep Wide Field Survey field. The
PiGSS image was constructed from 75 daily observations distributed over a
4-month period and has an rms flux density between 200 and 250 microJy. This
represents a deeper image by a factor of 4 to 8 than we will achieve over the
entire 10,000 deg^2. We provide flux densities, source sizes, and spectral
indices for the 425 sources detected in the image. We identify ~100$ new flat
spectrum radio sources; we project that when completed PiGSS will identify 10^4
flat spectrum sources. We identify one source that is a possible transient
radio source. This survey provides new limits on faint radio transients and

Indigenous family violence : an attempt to understand the problems and inform appropriate and effective responses to criminal justice system intervention
Whilst high levels of concern about the prevalence of family violence within Indigenous communities have long been expressed, progress in the development of evidence-based intervention programs for known perpetrators has been slow. This review of the literature aims to provide a resource for practitioners who work in this area, and a framework from within which culturally specific violence prevention programs can be developed and delivered. It is suggested that effective responses to Indigenous family violence need to be informed by culturally informed models of violence, and that significant work is needed to develop interventions that successfully manage the risk of perpetrators of family violence committing further offences.<br /

International meta-analysis of PTSD genome-wide association studies identifies sex- and ancestry-specific genetic risk loci.
The risk of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following trauma is heritable, but robust common variants have yet to be identified. In a multi-ethnic cohort including over 30,000 PTSD cases and 170,000 controls we conduct a genome-wide association study of PTSD. We demonstrate SNP-based heritability estimates of 5-20%, varying by sex. Three genome-wide significant loci are identified, 2 in European and 1 in African-ancestry analyses. Analyses stratified by sex implicate 3 additional loci in men. Along with other novel genes and non-coding RNAs, a Parkinson's disease gene involved in dopamine regulation, PARK2, is associated with PTSD. Finally, we demonstrate that polygenic risk for PTSD is significantly predictive of re-experiencing symptoms in the Million Veteran Program dataset, although specific loci did not replicate. These results demonstrate the role of genetic variation in the biology of risk for PTSD and highlight the necessity of conducting sex-stratified analyses and expanding GWAS beyond European ancestry populations
The Allen Telescope Array Twenty-centimeter Survey - A 690-Square-Degree, 12-Epoch Radio Dataset - I: Catalog and Long-Duration Transient Statistics
We present the Allen Telescope Array Twenty-centimeter Survey (ATATS), a
multi-epoch (12 visits), 690 square degree radio image and catalog at 1.4GHz.
The survey is designed to detect rare, very bright transients as well as to
verify the capabilities of the ATA to form large mosaics. The combined image
using data from all 12 ATATS epochs has RMS noise sigma = 3.94mJy / beam and
dynamic range 180, with a circular beam of 150 arcsec FWHM. It contains 4408
sources to a limiting sensitivity of S = 20 mJy / beam. We compare the catalog
generated from this 12-epoch combined image to the NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS),
a legacy survey at the same frequency, and find that we can measure source
positions to better than ~20 arcsec. For sources above the ATATS completeness
limit, the median flux density is 97% of the median value for matched NVSS
sources, indicative of an accurate overall flux calibration. We examine the
effects of source confusion due to the effects of differing resolution between
ATATS and NVSS on our ability to compare flux densities. We detect no
transients at flux densities greater than 40 mJy in comparison with NVSS, and
place a 2-sigma upper limit on the transient rate for such sources of 0.004 per
square degree. These results suggest that the > 1 Jy transients reported by
Matsumura et al. (2009) may not be true transients, but rather variable sources
