The Study of the Pioneer Anomaly: New Data and Objectives for New Investigation
Radiometric tracking data from Pioneer 10 and 11 spacecraft has consistently
indicated the presence of a small, anomalous, Doppler frequency drift,
uniformly changing with a rate of ~6 x 10^{-9} Hz/s; the drift can be
interpreted as a constant sunward acceleration of each particular spacecraft of
a_P = (8.74 \pm 1.33) x 10^{-10} m/s^2. This signal is known as the Pioneer
anomaly; the nature of this anomaly remains unexplained. We discuss the efforts
to retrieve the entire data sets of the Pioneer 10/11 radiometric Doppler data.
We also report on the recently recovered telemetry files that may be used to
reconstruct the engineering history of both spacecraft using original project
documentation and newly developed software tools. We discuss possible ways to
further investigate the discovered effect using these telemetry files in
conjunction with the analysis of the much extended Doppler data. We present the
main objectives of new upcoming study of the Pioneer anomaly, namely i)
analysis of the early data that could yield the direction of the anomaly, ii)
analysis of planetary encounters, that should tell more about the onset of the
anomaly, iii) analysis of the entire dataset, to better determine the anomaly's
temporal behavior, iv) comparative analysis of individual anomalous
accelerations for the two Pioneers, v) the detailed study of on-board
systematics, and vi) development of a thermal-electric-dynamical model using
on-board telemetry. The outlined strategy may allow for a higher accuracy
solution for a_P and, possibly, will lead to an unambiguous determination of

Geophysical Exploration of Vesta
Dawn’s year-long stay at Vesta allows
comprehensive mapping of the shape, topography,
geology, mineralogy, elemental abundances, and
gravity field using it’s three instruments and highprecision
spacecraft navigation. In the current Low
Altitude Mapping Orbit (LAMO), tracking data is being
acquired to develop a gravity field expected to be
accurate to degree and order ~20 [1, 2]. Multi-angle
imaging in the Survey and High Altitude Mapping
Orbit (HAMO) has provided adequate stereo coverage
to develop a shape model accurate to ~10 m at 100 m
horizontal spatial resolution. Accurate mass determination
combined with the shape yields a more precise
value of bulk density, albeit with some uncertainty
resulting from the unmeasured seasonally-dark north
polar region. The shape and gravity of Vesta can be
used to infer the interior density structure and investigate
the nature of the crust, informing models for Vesta’s
formation and evolution
On the Response of an OST to a Point-like Heat Source
A new technique of superconducting cavity diagnostics has been introduced by
D. Hartrill at Cornell University, Ithaca, USA. Oscillating Superleak
Transducers (OST) detect the heat transferred from a cavity's quench point via
"Second Sound" through the superfluid He bath, needed to cool the
superconducting cavity. The observed response of an OST is a complex, but
reproducible pattern of oscillations. A small helium evaporation cryostat was
built which allows the investigation of the response of an OST in greater
detail. The distance between a point-like electrical heater and the OST can be
varied. The OST can be mounted either parallel or perpendicular to the plate,
housing the heat source. If the artificial quench-point releases an amount of
energy compatible to a real quench spot on a cavity's surface, the OST signal
starts with a negative pulse, which is usually strong enough to allow automatic
detection. Furthermore, the reflection of the Second Sound on the wall is
observed. A reflection coefficient R = 0.39 +- 0.05 of the glass wall is
measured. This excludes a strong influence of multiple reflections in the
complex OST response. Fourier analyses show three main frequencies, found in
all OST spectra. They can be interpreted as modes of an oscillating circular

The Dawn Gravity Investigation at Vesta and Ceres
The objective of the Dawn gravity investigation is to use high precision X-band Doppler tracking and landmark tracking from optical images to measure the gravity fields of Vesta and Ceres to a half-wavelength surface resolution better than 90-km and 300-km, respectively. Depending on the Doppler tracking assumptions, the gravity field will be determined to somewhere between harmonic degrees 15 and 25 for Vesta and about degree 10 for Ceres. The gravity fields together with shape models determined from Dawn's framing camera constrain models of the interior from the core to the crust. The gravity field is determined jointly with the spin pole location. The second degree harmonics together with assumptions on obliquity or hydrostatic equilibrium may determine the moments of inertia
Fundamental Physics with the Laser Astrometric Test Of Relativity
The Laser Astrometric Test Of Relativity (LATOR) is a joint European-U.S.
Michelson-Morley-type experiment designed to test the pure tensor metric nature
of gravitation - a fundamental postulate of Einstein's theory of general
relativity. By using a combination of independent time-series of highly
accurate gravitational deflection of light in the immediate proximity to the
Sun, along with measurements of the Shapiro time delay on interplanetary scales
(to a precision respectively better than 0.1 picoradians and 1 cm), LATOR will
significantly improve our knowledge of relativistic gravity. The primary
mission objective is to i) measure the key post-Newtonian Eddington parameter
\gamma with accuracy of a part in 10^9. (1-\gamma) is a direct measure for
presence of a new interaction in gravitational theory, and, in its search,
LATOR goes a factor 30,000 beyond the present best result, Cassini's 2003 test.
The mission will also provide: ii) first measurement of gravity's non-linear
effects on light to ~0.01% accuracy; including both the Eddington \beta
parameter and also the spatial metric's 2nd order potential contribution (never
measured before); iii) direct measurement of the solar quadrupole moment J2
(currently unavailable) to accuracy of a part in 200 of its expected size; iv)
direct measurement of the "frame-dragging" effect on light by the Sun's
gravitomagnetic field, to 1% accuracy. LATOR's primary measurement pushes to
unprecedented accuracy the search for cosmologically relevant scalar-tensor
theories of gravity by looking for a remnant scalar field in today's solar

Gliadin, zonulin and gut permeability: effects on celiac and non-celiac intestinal mucosa and intestinal cell lines.
OBJECTIVE: Little is known about the interaction of gliadin with intestinal epithelial cells and the mechanism(s) through which gliadin crosses the intestinal epithelial barrier. We investigated whether gliadin has any immediate effect on zonulin release and signaling.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Both ex vivo human small intestines and intestinal cell monolayers were exposed to gliadin, and zonulin release and changes in paracellular permeability were monitored in the presence and absence of zonulin antagonism. Zonulin binding, cytoskeletal rearrangement, and zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1) redistribution were evaluated by immunofluorescence microscopy. Tight junction occludin and ZO-1 gene expression was evaluated by real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR).
RESULTS: When exposed to gliadin, zonulin receptor-positive IEC6 and Caco2 cells released zonulin in the cell medium with subsequent zonulin binding to the cell surface, rearrangement of the cell cytoskeleton, loss of occludin-ZO1 protein-protein interaction, and increased monolayer permeability. Pretreatment with the zonulin antagonist FZI/0 blocked these changes without affecting zonulin release. When exposed to luminal gliadin, intestinal biopsies from celiac patients in remission expressed a sustained luminal zonulin release and increase in intestinal permeability that was blocked by FZI/0 pretreatment. Conversely, biopsies from non-celiac patients demonstrated a limited, transient zonulin release which was paralleled by an increase in intestinal permeability that never reached the level of permeability seen in celiac disease (CD) tissues. Chronic gliadin exposure caused down-regulation of both ZO-1 and occludin gene expression.
CONCLUSIONS: Based on our results, we concluded that gliadin activates zonulin signaling irrespective of the genetic expression of autoimmunity, leading to increased intestinal permeability to macromolecules
Association between arterial stiffness and atherosclerosis: the Rotterdam Study
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Studies of the association between arterial
stiffness and atherosclerosis are contradictory. We studied stiffness of
the aorta and the common carotid artery in relation to several indicators
of atherosclerosis. METHODS: This study was conducted within the Rotterdam
Study in >3000 elderly subjects aged 60 to 101 years. Aortic stiffness was
assessed by measuring carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity, and common
carotid artery stiffness was assessed by measuring common carotid
distensibility. Atherosclerosis was assessed by common carotid
intima-media thickness, plaques in the carotid artery and in the aorta,
and the presence of peripheral arterial disease. Data were analyzed by
ANCOVA with adjustment for age, sex, mean arterial pressure, and heart
rate. RESULTS: Both aortic and common carotid artery stiffness were found
to have a strong positive association with common carotid intima-media
thickness, severity of plaques in the carotid artery, and severity of
plaques in the aorta (P: for trend <0.01 for all associations). Subjects
with peripheral arterial disease had significantly increased aortic
stiffness (P:=0.001) and borderline significantly increased common carotid
artery stiffness (P:=0.08) compared with subjects without peripheral
arterial disease. Results were similar after additional adjustment for
cardiovascular risk factors and after exclusion of subjects with prevalent
cardiovascular disease. CONCLUSIONS: This population-based study shows
that arterial stiffness is strongly associated with atherosclerosis at
various sites in the vascular tree
Orbital effects of a monochromatic plane gravitational wave with ultra-low frequency incident on a gravitationally bound two-body system
We analytically compute the long-term orbital variations of a test particle
orbiting a central body acted upon by an incident monochromatic plane
gravitational wave. We assume that the characteristic size of the perturbed
two-body system is much smaller than the wavelength of the wave. Moreover, we
also suppose that the wave's frequency is much smaller than the particle's
orbital one. We make neither a priori assumptions about the direction of the
wavevector nor on the orbital geometry of the planet. We find that, while the
semi-major axis is left unaffected, the eccentricity, the inclination, the
longitude of the ascending node, the longitude of pericenter and the mean
anomaly undergo non-vanishing long-term changes. They are not secular trends
because of the slow modulation introduced by the tidal matrix coefficients and
by the orbital elements themselves. They could be useful to indepenedently
constrain the ultra-low frequency waves which may have been indirectly detected
in the BICEP2 experiment. Our calculation holds, in general, for any
gravitationally bound two-body system whose characteristic frequency is much
larger than the frequency of the external wave. It is also valid for a generic
perturbation of tidal type with constant coefficients over timescales of the
