    Calibration of Low-Frequency, Wide-Field Radio Interferometers Using Delay/Delay-Rate Filtering

    We present a filtering technique that can be applied to individual baselines of wide-bandwidth, wide-field interferometric data to geometrically select regions on the celestial sphere that contain primary calibration sources. The technique relies on the Fourier transformation of wide-band frequency spectra from a given baseline to obtain one-dimensional "delay images", and then the transformation of a time-series of delay images to obtain two-dimensional "delay/delay-rate images." Source selection is possible in these images given appropriate combinations of baseline, bandwidth, integration time and source location. Strong and persistent radio frequency interference (RFI) limits the effectiveness of this source selection owing to the removal of data by RFI excision algorithms. A one-dimensional, complex CLEAN algorithm has been developed to compensate for RFI-excision effects. This approach allows CLEANed, source-isolated data to be used to isolate bandpass and primary beam gain functions. These techniques are applied to data from the Precision Array for Probing the Epoch of Reionization (PAPER) as a demonstration of their value in calibrating a new generation of low-frequency radio interferometers with wide relative bandwidths and large fields-of-view.Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures, 2009AJ....138..219

    Pulse-to-pulse intensity modulation and drifting subpulses in recycled pulsars

    We report the detection of pulse-to-pulse periodic intensity modulations, in observations of recycled pulsars. Even though the detection of individual pulses was generally not possible due to their low flux density and short duration, through the accumulation of statistics over sequences of 10^5--10^6 pulses we were able to determine the presence and properties of the pulse-to-pulse intensity variations of six pulsars. In most cases we found that the modulation included a weak, broadly quasi-periodic component. For two pulsars the sensitivity was high enough to ascertain that the modulation phase apparently varies systematically across the profile, indicating that the modulation appears as drifting subpulses. We detected brighter than average individual pulses in several pulsars, with energies up to 2--7 times higher than the mean, similar to results from normal pulsars. We were sensitive to giant pulses of a rate of occurrence equal to (and in many instances much lower than) that of PSR B1937+21 at 1400 MHz (~30 times lower than at 430 MHz), but none were detected, indicating that the phenomenon is rare in recycled pulsars.Comment: 15 pages, 17 figures, accepted to A&

    In dit artikel worden allianties die aangekondigd werden in de financiële pers over de periode 1986-1996, geanalyseerd en wordt meer specifiek nagegaan in welke mate allianties waar minimaal één Vlaamse of Belgische partner in actief was, verschillen van de totale steekproef. In het algemeen suggereert het belang van de productie- en distributie-allianties het belang van markttoegang als motief voor het aangaan van allianties. Niettemin werden over de beschouwde periode een belangrijk aantal O&O-allianties geïdentificeerd, wat het toenemend belang van allianties in de innovatie-strategieën van ondernemingen in het algemeen aangeeft, en in het bijzonder het belang van het verkrijgen van toegang tot technologische kennis als motief voor alliantievorming. Specifiek voor Vlaanderen werd vastgesteld dat Vlaamse ondernemingen beduidend minder actief zijn in 0&0- allianties. Relatief blijken meer allianties afgesloten worden in sectoren waar Vlaanderen een belangrijke technologische specialisatie in vertoont.

    The Linear Polarization of Sagittarius A* I. VLA Spectro-polarimetry at 4.8 and 8.4 GHz

    Synchrotron radiation from active galactic nuclei (AGN) is often highly polarized. We present a search for linear polarization with the Very Large Array (VLA) at 4.8 GHz and 8.4 GHz from the nearest AGN, Sagittarius A*. As a part of this study we used spectro-polarimetric data that were sensitive to a rotation measure (RM) as large as 3.5 x 10^6 rad m^-2 at 4.8 GHz and 1.5 x 10^7 rad m^-2 at 8.4 GHz. The upper limit to the linear polarization of Sgr A* over a broad range of RM is 0.2% at both frequencies. We also present continuum observations with the VLA at 4.8 GHz which give an upper limit of 0.1% for RMs less than 10^4 rad m^-2. We conclude that depolarization is unlikely to occur in the Galacter Center scattering medium. However, it is possible for depolarization to occur in the accretion region of Sgr A* if the outer scale of turbulence is small enough.     Gravitational Waves Probe the Coalescence Rate of Massive Black Hole Binaries

    We calculate the expected nHz--μ\muHz gravitational wave (GW) spectrum from coalescing Massive Black Hole (MBH) binaries resulting from mergers of their host galaxies. We consider detection of this spectrum by precision pulsar timing and a future Pulsar Timing Array. The spectrum depends on the merger rate of massive galaxies, the demographics of MBHs at low and high redshift, and the dynamics of MBH binaries. We apply recent theoretical and observational work on all of these fronts. The spectrum has a characteristic strain hc(f) 1015(f/yr1)2/3h_c(f)~10^{-15} (f/yr^{-1})^{-2/3}, just below the detection limit from recent analysis of precision pulsar timing measurements. However, the amplitude of the spectrum is still very uncertain owing to approximations in the theoretical formulation of the model, to our lack of knowledge of the merger rate and MBH population at high redshift, and to the dynamical problem of removing enough angular momentum from the MBH binary to reach a GW-dominated regime.Comment: 31 Pages, 8 Figures, small changes to match the published versio

    The Linear Polarization of Sagittarius A* II. VLA and BIMA Polarimetry at 22, 43 and 86 GHz

    We present a search for linear polarization at 22 GHz, 43 GHz and 86 GHz from the nearest super massive black hole candidate, Sagittarius A*. We find upper limits to the linear polarization of 0.2%, 0.4% and 1%, respectively. These results strongly support the conclusion of our centimeter wavelength spectro-polarimetry that Sgr A* is not depolarized by the interstellar medium but is in fact intrinsically depolarized.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ, 13 pages, 2 figure
