Towards a high precision calculation for the pion-nucleus scattering lengths
We calculate the leading isospin conserving few-nucleon contributions to pion
scattering on H, He, and He. We demonstrate that the strong
contributions to the pion-nucleus scattering lengths can be controlled
theoretically to an accuracy of a few percent for isoscalar nuclei and of 10%
for isovector nuclei. In particular, we find the -He scattering length
to be where the uncertainties are
due to ambiguities in the -N scattering lengths and few-nucleon effects,
respectively. To establish this accuracy we need to identify a suitable power
counting for pion-nucleus scattering. For this purpose we study the dependence
of the two-nucleon contributions to the scattering length on the binding energy
of H. Furthermore, we investigate the relative size of the leading two-,
three-, and four-nucleon contributions. For the numerical evaluation of the
pertinent integrals, aMonte Carlo method suitable for momentum space is
devised. Our results show that in general the power counting suggested by
Weinberg is capable to properly predict the relative importance of -nucleon
operators, however, it fails to capture the relative strength of - and
-nucleon operators, where we find a suppression by a factor of 5
compared to the predicted factor of 50. The relevance for the extraction of the
isoscalar -N scattering length from pionic H and He is discussed.
As a side result, we show that beyond the calculation of the -H
scattering length is already beyond the range of applicability of heavy pion

Comparative assessment of SF-6D health state preferences among Lebanese population pre- and post-COVID-19 pandemic
Objectives: Lebanon’s socio-economic situation has deteriorated significantly in recent years, a decline further exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. This multifaceted crisis may have shaped how individuals perceive and value different health states. The primary objective of this study was to assess and compare health state preferences of the general Lebanese population before and after the COVID-19 pandemic using the SF-6D measure. A secondary objective was to identify key predictors of these preferences,
including sociodemographic, health, and lifestyle factors.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted before and after the pandemic. A total of 249 SF-6D–defined health states were valued by 577 participants from the general population using standard gamble. Independent-samples t-tests and chi-square analyses examined differences in characteristics, while linear
regression models identified predictors of SF-6D utility scores.
Results: Data from 553 eligible respondents provided 3,308 valuations: 1,813 from 303 respondents preCOVID (July–October 2019) and 1,495 from 250 respondents post-COVID (February–July 2022). Results showed a significant shift in health state preferences post-COVID, with higher mean utility scores (preCOVID: 0.646±0.284; post-COVID: 0.719±0.258). Multiple regression analysis, adjusting for sociodemographic and health state dimensions, identified time (pre/post-COVID) (B=0.070; p<.001),
number of children ≤14 (B=-0.017; p<.001), educational (B=0.006; p=.039), smoking (B=-0.006; p<.001), and health conditions like asthma (B=0.028; p=.024) and liver problems (B=0.055; p=.006) as significant predictors.
Conclusion: This study highlights important shifts in health state preferences in Lebanon post-COVID. The influence of family burden and lifestyle factors on valuations has implications for public health policy, particularly when relying on pre-pandemic data
The effects of waterpipe tobacco smoking on health outcomes: an updated systematic review and meta-analysis
BACKGROUND AND AIMS: A systematic review conducted in 2008 found significant associations between waterpipe tobacco smoking and lung cancer, respiratory disease, periodontal disease and low birthweight. Since then, a number of relevant studies have been published. The objective of this study was to update the systematic review on the effects of waterpipe tobacco smoking on health outcomes. METHODS: In May 2015 we electronically searched the following databases with no date restrictions: MEDLINE, EMBASE and the ISI Web of Science using a detailed search strategy with no language restrictions. We also screened the references' lists of the included studies. We included cohort, case-control and cross-sectional studies, and excluded case reports, conference abstracts, editorials and reviews. We excluded studies not conducted in humans, assessing physiological outcomes, not distinguishing waterpipe tobacco smoking from other forms of smoking or not reporting association measures. We assessed risk of bias for each included study and conducted meta-analyses for each of the outcomes of interest. RESULTS: We identified 50 eligible studies. We found that waterpipe tobacco smoking was significantly associated with: respiratory diseases [COPD; odds ratio (OR) = 3.18, 95% confidence interval CI = 1.25, 8.08; bronchitis OR = 2.37, 95% CI = 1.49, 3.77; passive waterpipe smoking and wheeze OR) = 1.97, 95% CI = 1.28, 3.04]; oral cancer OR = 4.17, 95% CI = 2.53, 6.89; lung cancer OR = 2.12, 95% CI = 1.32, 3.42; low birthweight (OR = 2.39, 95% CI = 1.32, 4.32); metabolic syndrome (OR 1.63-1.95, 95% CI = 1.25, 2.45); cardiovascular disease (OR = 1.67, 95% CI = 1.25, 2.24); and mental health (OR 1.30-2.4, 95% CI = 1.20, 2.80). Waterpipe tobacco smoking was not significantly associated with: oesophageal cancer (OR = 4.14, 95% CI = 0.93, 18.46); worse quality of life scores [standardized mean difference (SMD) = -0.16, 95% CI = -0.66, 0.34]; gastric carcinoma (OR = 2.16, 95% CI = 0.72, 6.47); bladder cancer (OR = 1.25, 95% CI = 0.99, 1.57); prostate cancer (OR = 7.00, 95% CI = 0.90, 56.90); hepatitis C infection (OR = 0.98, 95%0.80, 1.21); periodontal disease (OR = 3.00, 5.00); gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (OR = 1.25, 95% CI = 1.01, 1.56); nasopharyngeal carcinoma (OR = 0.49, 95% CI = 0.20, 1.23); bladder cancer (OR = 1.25, 95% CI = 0.99, 1.57); infertility (OR = 2.50, 95% CI = 1.00, 6.30); and mortality (OR = 1.15, 95% CI = 0.93, 1.43). CONCLUSIONS: There is accumulating evidence about the association of waterpipe tobacco smoking with a growing number of health outcomes
Bactericidal Efficacy of Cold Plasma at Different Depths of Infected Root Canals In Vitro
Objectives: Cold plasma (CP) has been shown to be effective even against multiresistant microorganisms. As previous investigations on the effect of CP in root canals showed promising results, the aim of the present study was to analyze the bactericidal efficacy of CP in different depths of infected dentin. Methods: 32 standardized root canals of human mandibular premolars were infected with Enterococcus faecalis and incubated for one week. Specimens were randomly selected for one of four disinfection methods: control (5mL NaCl), 5mL chlorhexidine (CHX), CP alone (CP), and a combination of 5mL CHX and cold plasma (CHX+CP). CHX was ultrasonically activated for 30s, while cold plasma was used for 60s in the root canals. Dentin samples at depths of 300, 500 and 800 µm were obtained and diluted serially. Colony forming units (CFUs) were counted on agar plates after 24h of incubation. Results: The highest overall logarithmic reduction factors (RF) were obtained from CHX+CP (log RF 3.56 p<0.01; Mann-Whitney U test), followed by CP (log RF 3.27 p<0.01) and CHX alone (log RF 2.65 p<0.01) related to the control. All disinfection methods showed significantly lower CFU counts compared to the control group in 300 µm and 800 µm (both p<0.01, Kruskal-Wallis test). Discussion: The adjuvant use of CP might be beneficial in highly infected root canals to improved disinfection. However, the disinfection effect against Enterococcus faecalis of CP is comparable to ultrasonically activated CHX
Acute seizures occurring in association with SARS-CoV-2
Seizures are an infrequent and serious neurological complication of SARS-CoV-2 infection, with limited data describing the etiology and the clinical context in which these occur or the associated electrographic and imaging findings. This series details four cases of seizures occurring in patients with COVID-19 with distinct time points, underlying pathology, and proposed physiological mechanisms. An enhanced understanding of seizure manifestations in COVID-19 and their clinical course may allow for earlier detection and improved patient management
Classifying caesarean section to understand rising rates among Palestinian refugees: results from 290,047 electronic medical records across five settings
Background: Rising caesarean-section rates worldwide are driven by non-medically indicated caesarean-sections. A systematic review concluded that the ten-group classifcation system (Robson) is the most appropriate for assessing drivers of caesarean deliveries. Evidence on the drivers of caesarean-section rates from confictafected settings is scarce. This study examines caesareans-section rates among Palestinian refugees by seven-group classifcation, compares to WHO guidelines, and to rates in the host settings, and estimates the costs of high rates.Methods: Electronic medical records of 290,047 Palestinian refugee women using UNRWA’s (United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East) antenatal service from 2017–2020 in fve settings (Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, West Bank, Gaza) were used. We modifed Robson criteria to compare rates within each group with WHO guidelines. The host setting data were extracted from publicly available reports. Data on costs came from UNRWA’s accounts.Findings: Palestinian refugees in Gaza had the lowest caesarean-section rates (22%), followed by those residing in Jordan (28%), West Bank (30%), Lebanon (50%) and Syria (64%). The seven groups caesarean section classifcation showed women with previous caesarean-sections contributed the most to overall rates. Caesarean-section rates were substantially higher than the WHO guidelines, and excess caesarean-sections (2017–2020) were modelled to cost up to 6.8 million USD. We documented a steady increase in caesarean-section rates in all fve settings for refugee and host communities; refugee rates paralleled or were below those in their host country.Interpretation: Caesarean-section rates exceed recommended guidance within most groups. The high rates in the nulliparous groups will drive future increases as they become multiparous women with a previous caesareansection and in turn, face high caesarean rates. Our analysis helps suggest targeted and tailored strategies to reduce caesarean-section rates in priority groups (among low-risk women) organized by those aimed at national governments, and UNRWA, and those aimed at health-care providers

Study of pallial neurogenesis in shark embryos and the evolutionary origin of the subventricular zone
The dorsal part of the developing telencephalon is one of the brain areas that has suffered most drastic changes throughout vertebrate evolution. Its evolutionary increase in complexity was thought to be partly achieved by the appearance of a new neurogenic niche in the embryonic subventricular zone (SVZ). Here, a new kind of amplifying progenitors (basal progenitors) expressing Tbr2, undergo a second round of divisions, which is believed to have contributed to the expansion of the neocortex. Accordingly, the existence of a pallial SVZ has been classically considered exclusive of mammals. However, the lack of studies in ancient vertebrates precludes any clear conclusion about the evolutionary origin of the SVZ and the neurogenic mechanisms that rule pallial development. In this work, we explore pallial neurogenesis in a basal vertebrate, the shark Scyliorhinus canicula, through the study of the expression patterns of several neurogenic markers. We found that apical progenitors and radial migration are present in sharks, and therefore, their presence must be highly conserved throughout evolution. Surprisingly, we detected a subventricular band of ScTbr2-expressing cells, some of which also expressed mitotic markers, indicating that the existence of basal progenitors should be considered an ancestral condition rather than a novelty of mammals or amniotes. Finally, we report that the transcriptional program for the specification of glutamatergic pallial cells (Pax6, Tbr2, NeuroD, Tbr1) is also present in sharks.
