Clubs and the Market
This paper defines a general eqilibrium model with exchange and club formation. Agents trade multiple private goods widely in the market, can belong to several clubs, and care about the characteristics of the other members of their clubs. The space of agents is a continuum, but clubs are finite. It is shown that (i) competitive equilibria exist, and (ii) the core coincides with the set of equilibrium states. The central subtlety is in modeling club memberships and expressing the notion that membership choices are consistent across the population.clubs; continuum models; public goods; core; club equilibrium
Weighted multiple interpolation and the control of perturbed semigroup systems
In this paper the controllabillity and admissibility of perturbed semigroup
systems are studied, using tools from the theory of interpolation and Carleson
measures. In addition, there are new results on the perturbation of Carleson
measures and on the weighted interpolation of functions and their derivatives
in Hardy spaces, which are of interest in their own right
Volunteering with sex offenders: the attitudes of volunteers toward sex offenders, their treatment and rehabilitation
The general public has been shown to hold negative attitudes toward sexual offenders (Levenson, Brannon, Fortney, & Baker, 2007; Willis et al., 2010), sex offender treatment (e.g. Olver & Barlow, 2010) and the rehabilitation of sexual offenders (Payne, Tewksbury, & Mustaine, 2010). It appears pertinent to the success of sex offender management strategies that utilise volunteers that selected volunteers do not share these attitudes. Here, volunteers for Circles of Support and Accountability (CoSA), a community-based initiative supporting the reintegration of sex offenders, completed three validated psychometric measures assessing attitudes toward sex offenders in general and toward their treatment and rehabilitation. Responses were compared to a UK general public sample. The results showed that volunteers held more positive attitudes toward sex offenders, sex offender treatment and sex offender rehabilitation than the UK general public sample. The significance of these findings is discussed alongside directions for future research
FUSE Detection of Galactic OVI Emission in the Halo above the Perseus Arm
Background observations obtained with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic
Explorer (FUSE) toward l=95.4, b=36.1 show OVI 1032,1038 in emission. This
sight line probes a region of stronger-than-average soft X-ray emission in the
direction of high-velocity cloud Complex C above a part of the disk where
Halpha filaments rise into the halo. The OVI intensities, 1600+/-300
ph/s/cm^2/sr (1032A) and 800+/-300 ph/s/cm^2/sr (1038A), are the lowest
detected in emission in the Milky Way to date. A second sight line nearby
(l=99.3, b=43.3) also shows OVI 1032 emission, but with too low a
signal-to-noise ratio to obtain reliable measurements. The measured
intensities, velocities, and FWHMs of the OVI doublet and the CII* line at
1037A are consistent with a model in which the observed emission is produced in
the Galactic halo by hot gas ejected by supernovae in the Perseus arm. An
association of the observed gas with Complex C appears unlikely.Comment: accepted for publication in ApJL, 11 pages including 3 figure
Finite-Size Scaling Studies of Reaction-Diffusion Systems Part III: Numerical Methods
The scaling exponent and scaling function for the 1D single species
coagulation model are shown to be universal, i.e. they are
not influenced by the value of the coagulation rate. They are independent of
the initial conditions as well. Two different numerical methods are used to
compute the scaling properties: Monte Carlo simulations and extrapolations of
exact finite lattice data. These methods are tested in a case where analytical
results are available. It is shown that Monte Carlo simulations can be used to
compute even the correction terms. To obtain reliable results from finite-size
extrapolations exact numerical data for lattices up to ten sites are

Balancing employee needs, project requirements and organisational priorities in team deployment
The 'people and performance' model asserts that performance is a sum of employee ability, motivation and opportunity (AMO). Despite extensive evidence of this people-performance link within manufacturing and many service sectors, studies within the construction industry are limited. Thus, a recent research project set out to explore the team deployment strategies of a large construction company with the view of establishing how a balance could be achieved between organisational strategic priorities, operational project requirements and individual employee needs and preferences. The findings suggested that project priorities often took precedence over the delivery of the strategic intentions of the organisation in meeting employees' individual needs. This approach is not sustainable in the long term because of the negative implications that such a policy had in relation to employee stress and staff turnover. It is suggested that a resourcing structure that takes into account the multiple facets of AMO may provide a more effective approach for balancing organisational strategic priorities, operational project requirements and individual employee needs and preferences more appropriately in the future
