Self-concept evaluation and migraine without aura in childhood
Introduction: Self-esteem is related to the broadly understood concept of self-schemas and is a crucial mechanism for a correct psychological development in children and adolescents. The impact of the many psychological difficulties linked to the migraine without aura (MoA) and recurrent headache attacks, such as anger and separation anxiety, on self-esteem has not yet been well investigated. The aims of the present study were to assess self-esteem levels in an objective way and to verify their possible relationship and correlation with the frequency and intensity of migraine attacks, in a population of children and adolescents affected by MoA.
Methods: The study population was comprised of 185 children (88 males [M], 97 females [F]) aged between 6 and 12 years (mean 9.04 ± 2.41 years) referred consecutively for MoA to the Center for Childhood Headache, Clinic of Child and Adolescent Neuropsychiatry, Second University of Naples and of 203 healthy controls (95 M, 108 F) with mean age 9.16 ± 2.37 years, recruited from schools in Campania. The monthly headache frequency and the mean headache duration were assessed from daily headache diaries kept by all the children, and MoA intensity was assessed on a VAS (visual analog scale). To further evaluate their level of self-concept, all subjects filled out the Multidimensional Self-Concept Scale (MSCS).
Results: The two study groups were comparable for age (P = 0.621), sex (P = 0.960), and z-score BMI (P = 0.102). The MoA group showed a significant reduction in the MSCS total score (P , 0.001) and in the Social (P , 0.001), Affect (P , 0.001), Family (P , 0.001), and Physical (P , 0.001) domains of the MSCS compared with the control group. The Pearson’s correlation analysis showed a significantly negative relationship between MoA clinical characteristics and MSCS scores, and similarly the frequency of attacks was significantly negatively related with the Social (r = −0.3176; P , 0.001), Competence (r = −0.2349; P = 0.001), Physical (r = −0.2378; P = 0.001), and total (r = −0.2825; P , 0.001) scores of the MSCS. On the other hand, the MoA duration was significantly negatively related with the Social (r = −0.1878; P = 0.01), Competence (r = −0.2270; P = 0.002), Physical (r = −0.1976; P = 0.007), and total (r = −0.1903; P = 0.009) scores of the MSCS.
Conclusion: Our study first identified differences in self-esteem levels, with an objective tool, in children affected by MoA compared with controls, suggesting the need for evaluation of self-esteem for better psychological pediatric management of children with migraine
Tenascin Expression in Human Placentas during FGR Affected Pregnancies and Umbilical Doppler Velocimetry Correlation
Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the expression of some non collagenous extracellular matrix proteins, in particular tenascin, in human placentas of intrauterine growth restricted fetuses with abnormal umbilical Doppler velocimetry. Study Design: Study group (group A) consisted of 23 pregnant women with intrauterine growth restricted fetuses, with or without preeclampsia. Control group (group B) consisted of 10 pregnant women with appropriate fetal weight for gestational age. Placental specimens were collected from biopsies obtained after cesarean delivery. Umbilical artery Doppler velocimetry was performed within four hours from delivery in all patients. Tenascin expression was studied by immunohistochemistry and western blot techniques. Results: A difference in birth weight and placental weight was found in the two groups, being lower in the study group. Umbilical artery Doppler velocimetry showed abnormal patterns in the study group and normal findings in the control one. Tenascin was strongly expressed in placentas from growth restricted fetuses, as shown by immunohistochemistry and by RT-PCR, while it was almost absent in placentas from group B.
Conclusion: A relationship between abnormal Doppler patterns and tenascin distribution in growth restricted fetuses has been observed. The presence of tenascin might be considered as a placental compensatory mechanism in FGR fetuses with abnormal umbilical artery Doppler velocimetry
Geodetic model of the 2016 Central Italy earthquake sequence inferred from InSAR and GPS data
We investigate a large geodetic data set of interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR)and GPS measurements to determine the source parameters for the three main shocks of the 2016Central Italy earthquake sequence on 24 August and 26 and 30 October (Mw6.1, 5.9, and 6.5,respectively). Our preferred model is consistent with the activation of four main coseismic asperitiesbelonging to the SW dipping normal fault system associated with the Mount Gorzano-Mount Vettore-Mount Bove alignment. Additional slip, equivalent to aMw~ 6.1–6.2 earthquake, on a secondary (1) NEdipping antithetic fault and/or (2) on a WNW dipping low-angle fault in the hanging wall of the mainsystem is required to better reproduce the complex deformation pattern associated with the greatestseismic event (theMw6.5 earthquake). Activity and Process Stability of Purified Green Pepper (Capsicum annuum) Pectin Methylesterase
Pectin methylesterase (PME) from green bell peppers (Capsicum annuum) was extracted and purified by affinity chromatography on a CNBr-Sepharose-PMEI column. A single protein peak with pectin methylesterase activity was observed. For the pepper PME, a biochemical characterization in terms of molar mass (MM), isoelectric points (pI), and kinetic parameters for activity and thermostability was performed. The optimum pH for PME activity at 22 °C was 7.5, and its optimum temperature at neutral pH was between 52.5 and 55.0 °C. The purified pepper PME required the presence of 0.13 M NaCl for optimum activity. Isothermal inactivation of purified pepper PME in 20 mM Tris buffer (pH 7.5) could be described by a fractional conversion model for lower temperatures (55?57 °C) and a biphasic model for higher temperatures (58?70 °C). The enzyme showed a stable behavior toward high-pressure/temperature treatments. Bisulfite sequencing studies have identified 5-methylcytosine (5 mC) DNA methylation as one of the epigenetic changes that may be involved in this process. However, analysis of samples by bisulfite sequencing is a time-consuming procedure. Yukawa potentials in systems with partial periodic boundary conditions I : Ewald sums for quasi-two dimensional systems
Yukawa potentials are often used as effective potentials for systems as
colloids, plasmas, etc. When the Debye screening length is large, the Yukawa
potential tends to the non-screened Coulomb potential ; in this small screening
limit, or Coulomb limit, the potential is long ranged. As it is well known in
computer simulation, a simple truncation of the long ranged potential and the
minimum image convention are insufficient to obtain accurate numerical data on
systems. The Ewald method for bulk systems, i.e. with periodic boundary
conditions in all three directions of the space, has already been derived for
Yukawa potential [cf. Y., Rosenfeld, {\it Mol. Phys.}, \bm{88}, 1357, (1996)
and G., Salin and J.-M., Caillol, {\it J. Chem. Phys.}, \bm{113}, 10459,
(2000)], but for systems with partial periodic boundary conditions, the Ewald
sums have only recently been obtained [M., Mazars, {\it J. Chem. Phys.}, {\bf
126}, 056101 (2007)]. In this paper, we provide a closed derivation of the
Ewald sums for Yukawa potentials in systems with periodic boundary conditions
in only two directions and for any value of the Debye length. A special
attention is paid to the Coulomb limit and its relation with the

Species recovery in the united states: Increasing the effectiveness of the endangered species act
The Endangered Species Act (ESA) has succeeded in shielding hundreds of species from extinction and improving species recovery over time. However, recovery for most species officially protected by the ESA - i.e., listed species-has been harder to achieve than initially envisioned. Threats to species are persistent and pervasive, funding has been insufficient, the distribution of money among listed species is highly uneven, and at least 10 times more species than are actually listed probably qualify for listing. Moreover, many listed species will require ongoing management for the foreseeable future to protect them from persistent threats. Climate change will exacerbate this problem and increase both species risk and management uncertainty, requiring more intensive and controversial management strategies to prevent species from going extinct
Organizational Features in the Management of Infrastructure Safety
The topic dealing with the infrastructure safety is one of the most relevant arguments in the governance of a geographical area where many structural systems have been built over time. Indeed, many structural systems often present safety or functionality critical issues and specific interventions are required to prevent undesirable social consequences. In this context, the stakeholders, i.e., public or private actors and institutions, are strongly involved in both the economic and administrative procedures. This contribution preliminarily provides some enhancements to improve the management of the infrastructures safety. Specifically, analyzing an Italian case study, the study proposes to adopt the remote sensing through satellite-based sensor technologies for an analysis at territorial scale. In this way, the territorial point of view on the critical issues affecting the infrastructures leads to involve the stakeholders to attain a wider degree of organization in the governance and management processes
