Solar energy research and utilization
The role is described that solar energy will play in the heating and cooling of buildings, the production of renewable gaseous, liquid and solid fuels, and the production of electric power over the next 45 years. Potential impacts on the various energy markets and estimated costs of such systems are discussed along with illustrations of some of the processes to accomplish the goals. The conclusions of the NSF/NASA Solar Energy Panel (1972) are given along with the estimated costs to accomplish the 15 year recommended program and also the recent and near future budget appropriations and recommendations are included
Interim report on the hydrologic features of the Green Swamp area in Central Florida
The Green Swamp area in central Florida is another
area where man is developing agricultural land from marginal
land. Though the area is by no means as extensive as
that of the Everglades, the present efforts for its development
are similar to the early efforts for developing the Everglades
in that many miles of canals and ditches have been
constructed to improve the drainage.
Lest the early mistakes of the Everglades be repeated,
the Florida Department of Water Resources considered that
an appraisal of the physical and hydrologic features of the
area was needed to determine the broad effects of draining
and developing the swamp. This reconnaissance provides information required
by the State of Florida for determining its responsibility
and policy in regard to the Green Swamp area and
for formulating future plans for water management of the
area.
Some of the features that have been determined are:
the amount of rainfall on the area; the pattern of surfacewater
drainage; the amount and direction of surface-water
runoff; the direction of ground-water movement; the interrelationship
of rainfall, surface water, and ground water;
the effects of improved drainage facilities'; and the effects
of the hydrologic environment on the chemical quality of

The Integration of Positron Emission Tomography With Magnetic Resonance Imaging
A number of laboratories and companies are currently exploring the development of integrated imaging systems for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET). Scanners for both preclinical and human research applications are being pursued. In contrast to the widely distributed and now quite mature PET/computed tomography technology, most PET/MRI designs allow for simultaneous rather than sequential acquisition of PET and MRI data. While this offers the possibility of novel imaging strategies, it also creates considerable challenges for acquiring artifact-free images from both modalities. This paper discusses the motivation for developing combined PET/MRI technology, outlines the obstacles in realizing such an integrated instrument, and presents recent progress in the development of both the instrumentation and of novel imaging agents for combined PET/MRI studies. The CEOS Data Cube Portal: A User-Friendly, Open Source Software Solution for the Distribution, Exploration, Analysis, and Visualization of Analysis Ready Data
There is an urgent need to increase the capacity of developing countries to take part in the study and monitoring of their environments through remote sensing and space-based Earth observation technologies. The Open Data Cube (ODC) provides a mechanism for efficient storage and a powerful framework for processing and analyzing satellite data. While this is ideal for scientific research, the expansive feature space can also be daunting for end-users and decision-makers who simply require a solution which provides easy exploration, analysis, and visualization of Analysis Ready Data (ARD). Utilizing innovative web-design and a modular architecture, the Committee on Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS) has created a web-based user interface (UI) which harnesses the power of the ODC yet provides a simple and familiar user experience: the CEOS Data Cube (CDC). This paper presents an overview of the CDC architecture and the salient features of the UI. In order to provide adaptability, flexibility, scalability, and robustness, we leverage widely-adopted and well-supported technologies such as the Django web framework and the AWS Cloud platform. The fully-customizable source code of the UI is available at our public repository. Interested parties can download the source and build their own UIs. The UI empowers users by providing features that assist with streamlining data preparation, data processing, data visualization, and sub-setting ARD products in order to achieve a wide variety of Earth imaging objectives through an easy to use web interface
