Information literacy skills to use web resources: an analysis of two Biology subjects
Students have a large amount of information readily available they can use
while enrolled in our courses. However, they must have already acquired the
necessary information literacy skills to search, evaluate, and use information in a
proper and efficient way, mainly concerning Web resources. Despite the fact that
students show high technological abilities, the analysis of the way they gather information and the quality of their sources shows that there are still important
shortcomings. The present study evaluates the information literacy skills of
students enrolled in two Biology subjects at the University of A Coruña. Results
confirm that the development of specific activities, even if they might be timecosting
for teachers, certainly improve students’ skills. Thus, we present the
organization of seminars for small groups of students in the new Grade in
Biology that can serve to improve their information literacy skills, as well as to
introduce students the process of peer-review
Bone chondrosarcoma very rarely affccts the foot. We report a case of primary
bone chondrosarcoma vvith low grade malignancy involving the first metatarsal bone. Tumor was
treated by wide resection. Three and half years later, there was not signs of recurrence
Lanthanides and other spectral oddities in a Centauri
Context: There is considerable interest in the helium variable a Cen as a
bridge between helium-weak and helium-strong CP stars. Aims: We investigate Ce
III and other possible lanthanides in the spectrum the of hottest chemically
peculiar (CP) star in which these elements have been found. A {Kr II line
appears within a broad absorption which we suggest may be due to a high-level
transition in C II. Methods: Wavelengths and equivalent widths are measured on
high-resolution UVES spectra, analyzed, and their phase-variations
investigated. Results: New, robust identifications of Ce III and Kr II are
demonstrated. Nd III is likely present. A broad absorption near 4619[A] is
present at all phases of a Cen, and in some other early B stars. Conclusions:
The presence of lanthanides in a Cen strengthens the view that this star is a
significant link between the cooler CP stars and the hotter helium-peculiar
stars. Broad absorptions in a Cen are not well explained.Comment: Research Note accepted by Astronomy and Astrophysics; 4 pages, 4

Simultaneous Surface Plasmon Resonance and X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy
We present here an experimental set-up to perform simultaneously measurements
of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) in a
synchrotron beamline. The system allows measuring in situ and in real time the
effect of X-ray irradiation on the SPR curves to explore the interaction of
X-rays with matter. It is also possible to record XAS spectra while exciting
SPR in order to detect the changes in the electronic configuration of thin
films induced by the excitation of surface plasmons. Combined experiments
recording simultaneously SPR and XAS curves while scanning different parameters
can be carried out. The relative variations in the SPR and XAS spectra that can
be detected with this set-up ranges from 10-3 to 10-5, depending on the
particular experiment
Experimental approval of the extended flat bands and gapped subbands in rhombohedral multilayer graphene
Graphene layers are known to stack in two stable configurations, namely ABA
or ABC stacking, with drastically distinct electronic properties. Unlike the
ABA stacking, little has been done to experimentally investigate the electronic
properties of ABC graphene multilayers. Here, we report the first magneto
optical study of a large ABC domain in a graphene multilayers flake, with ABC
sequences exceeding 17 graphene sheets. The ABC-stacked multilayers can be
fingerprinted with a characteristic electronic Raman scattering response, which
persists even at room temperatures. Tracing the magnetic field evolution of the
inter Landau level excitations from this domain gives strong evidence to the
existence of a dispersionless electronic band near the Fermi level,
characteristic of such stacking. Our findings present a simple yet powerful
approach to probe ABC stacking in graphene multilayer flakes, where this highly
degenerated band appears as an appealing candidate to host strongly correlated
states.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure
Cambrian bioestratigraphy and environmental evolution of the Borobia area (Province of Soria, Oriental Iberian Chain, Spain)
Two stratigraphical sections from the more septentrional Cambrian outcrops of the Oriental Iberian Chain 'are studied, including theJalón, Ribota, Huérmeda, Daroca, Valdemiedes, Murero and Acón formations (Lower-Middle Cambrian). The stratigraphical, mineralogical, petrological and paleontological data suggest the presence of three eustatic geoevents. The first one (Lower Cambrian Transgression) started with litoral deposits on arid and oxidant conditions that changed to sublitoral deposits (carbonate shelf) and posteriorly to an open siliciclastic shelf. The second eustatic geoevent (Hawke Bay Regression) is represented by the sandstones and lutites of the Daroca formation. The third geoevent (Middle
Cambrian Transgression) began with the establishment of a mixed shelf (terrigenous- carbonated) and shows sorne regressive pulses represented by the basal leveIs of the Acón Formation. The presence of the trilobites Strenuaeva ineondita, Aeadolenus sp., Asturiaspis
inopinatus, Paradoxides (Eceaparadoxides) suleatus, P. (Eee.) rouvillei, P. (Bee.) barehyrhaehis, Badulesia tenera, Badulesia pasehz~ Badulesia granien', Solenopleuropsis
verdiagana, Solenopleuropsis truneata and Paradazlhania sp.; and the acritarchs Skiagia ezliosa, Heiosphaen'dium dissimzlare, Arehaeodiseina umbonulata, Cristallinium eambn'ensis, Eliasum Ilaniseum, Timofeevia fosfontiea and timofeevia lanearae suggest a Lower-Middle Cambrian age (Marianian to Caesaraugustian stages). These biostratigraphical data allow a comparison between the trilobite and acritarch biozonations for the first time in Spain as well as the correlation of the Península Ibérica's Lower-Middle Cambrian materials with the East European Platform ones.
Nonlinear software sensor for monitoring genetic regulation processes with noise and modeling errors
Nonlinear control techniques by means of a software sensor that are commonly
used in chemical engineering could be also applied to genetic regulation
processes. We provide here a realistic formulation of this procedure by
introducing an additive white Gaussian noise, which is usually found in
experimental data. Besides, we include model errors, meaning that we assume we
do not know the nonlinear regulation function of the process. In order to
illustrate this procedure, we employ the Goodwin dynamics of the concentrations
[B.C. Goodwin, Temporal Oscillations in Cells, (Academic Press, New York,
1963)] in the simple form recently applied to single gene systems and some
operon cases [H. De Jong, J. Comp. Biol. 9, 67 (2002)], which involves the
dynamics of the mRNA, given protein, and metabolite concentrations. Further, we
present results for a three gene case in co-regulated sets of transcription
units as they occur in prokaryotes. However, instead of considering their full
dynamics, we use only the data of the metabolites and a designed software
sensor. We also show, more generally, that it is possible to rebuild the
complete set of nonmeasured concentrations despite the uncertainties in the
regulation function or, even more, in the case of not knowing the mRNA
dynamics. In addition, the rebuilding of concentrations is not affected by the
perturbation due to the additive white Gaussian noise and also we managed to
filter the noisy output of the biological systemComment: 21 pages, 7 figures; also selected in vjbio of August 2005; this
