The Optical Polarization of Near-Infrared Selected QSOs
Optical broad-band polarimetry is presented for near-infrared color-selected
AGN classified QSOs based on their K-band luminosity. More than 10% of a sample
of 70 QSOs discovered in the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) with J-K > 2 and
M_K 3%), and values range
to a maximum of P = 11%. High polarization tends to be associated with the most
luminous objects at K, and with QSOs having the highest near-IR-to-optical flux
ratios. The 2MASS QSO sample includes objects possessing a wide range of
optical spectral types. High polarization is seen in two of 22 broad
emission-line (Type 1) objects, but 1/4 of the QSOs of intermediate spectral
type (Type 1.5-1.9) are highly polarized. None of the nine QSOs classified as
Type 2 exhibit P > 3%. It is likely that the unavoidable inclusion of
unpolarized starlight from the host galaxy within the observation aperture
results in reduced polarization for the narrow emission-line objects. The high
polarization of 2MASS-discovered QSOs supports the conclusion inferred from
their near-IR and optical colors, that the nuclei of many of these objects are
obscured to some degree by dust. The 2MASS QSO sample is compared to other,
predominantly radio-quiet, QSOs and is found to be consistent with the idea
that the orientation of AGN to the line of sight plays a major role in

An Extraordinary Scattered Broad Emission Line in a Type 2 QSO
An infrared-selected, narrow-line QSO has been found to exhibit an
extraordinarily broad Halpha emission line in polarized light. Both the extreme
width (35,000 km/sec full-width at zero intensity) and 3,000 km/sec redshift of
the line centroid with respect to the systemic velocity suggest emission in a
deep gravitational potential. An extremely red polarized continuum and partial
scattering of the narrow lines at a position angle common to the broad-line
emission imply extensive obscuration, with few unimpeded lines of sight to the

The Effect of Transfer Printing on Pentacene Thin-Film Crystal Structure
The thermal deposition and transfer Printing method had been used to produce
pentacene thin-films on SiO2/Si and plastic substrates (PMMA and PVP),
respectively. X-ray diffraction patterns of pentacene thin films showed
reflections associated with highly ordered polycrystalline films and a
coexistence of two polymorph phases classified by their d-spacing, d(001): 14.4
and 15.4 A.The dependence of the c-axis correlation length and the phase
fraction on the film thickness and printing temperature were measured. A
transition from the 15.4 A phase towards 14.4 A phase was also observed with
increasing film thickness. An increase in the c-axis correlation length of
approximately 12% ~16% was observed for Pn films transfer printed onto a PMMA
coated PET substrate at 100~120 C as compared to as-grown Pn films on SiO2/Si
substrates. The transfer printing method is shown to be an attractive for the
fabrication of pentacene thin-film transistors on flexible substrates partly
because of the resulting improvement in the quality of the pentacene film.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
The Polarized Spectrum of Apm 08279+5255
We report the discovery of significant linear polarization (p > 1%) in the
hyperluminous z=3.87 BALQSO APM~08279+5255. The polarization spectrum is
complex, with properties similar to those of other, lower redshift but more
highly polarized BALQSOs. The resonance emission lines are unpolarized while
the absorption troughs show polarization similar to or higher than the
continuum. In particular, an apparent increase of polarization in the trough
covering 1000-1030 angstroms (rest) supports the interpretation of this feature
as a broad absorption component associated with OVI/Ly_beta local to the QSO,
as opposed to an intervening damped Ly_alpha absorption system.
The elevated polarization in some of the absorption features implies that we
view the scattered (polarized) spectrum through a sightline with less absorbing
material than the direct spectrum. Therefore, the complex structure of the
polarization spectrum in this brilliant lensed BALQSO suggests that it will be
an important laboratory for studying the structure of QSOs at high redshift.Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure. Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical

NICMOS Imaging of the Nuclei of Arp 220
We report high resolution imaging of the ultraluminous infrared galaxy Arp
220 at 1.1, 1.6, and 2.22 microns with NICMOS on the HST. The
diffraction-limited images at 0.1--0.2 arcsecond resolution clearly resolve
both nuclei of the merging galaxy system and reveal for the first time a number
of luminous star clusters in the circumnuclear envelope. The morphologies of
both nuclei are strongly affected by dust obscuration, even at 2.2 microns :
the primary nucleus (west) presents a crescent shape, concave to the south and
the secondary (eastern) nucleus is bifurcated by a dust lane with the southern
component being very reddened. In the western nucleus, the morphology of the
2.2 micron emission is most likely the result of obscuration by an opaque disk
embedded within the nuclear star cluster. The morphology of the central
starburst-cluster in the western nucleus is consistent with either a
circumnuclear ring of star formation or a spherical cluster with the bottom
half obscured by the embedded dust disk. Comparison of cm-wave radio continuum
maps with the near-infrared images suggests that the radio nuclei lie in the
dust disk on the west and near the highly reddened southern component of the
eastern complex. The radio nuclei are separated by 0.98 arcseconds
(corresponding to 364 pc at 77 Mpc) and the half-widths of the infrared nuclei
are approximately 0.2-0.5 arcseconds. At least 8, unresolved infrared sources
-- probably globular clusters -- are also seen in the circumnuclear envelope at
radii 2-7 arcseconds . Their near-infrared colors do not significantly

The Formation and Evolution of Planetary Systems: Description of the Spitzer Legacy Science Database
We present the science database produced by the Formation and Evolution of
Planetary Systems (FEPS) Spitzer Legacy program. Data reduction and validation
procedures for the IRAC, MIPS, and IRS instruments are described in detail. We
also derive stellar properties for the FEPS sample from available broad-band
photometry and spectral types, and present an algorithm to normalize Kurucz
synthetic spectra to optical and near-infrared photometry. The final FEPS data
products include IRAC and MIPS photometry for each star in the FEPS sample and

Readout of solid-state charge qubits using a single-electron pump
A major difficulty in realizing a solid-state quantum computer is the
reliable measurement of the states of the quantum registers. In this paper, we
propose an efficient readout scheme making use of the resonant tunneling of a
ballistic electron produced by a single electron pump. We treat the measurement
interaction in detail by modeling the full spatial configuration, and show that
for pumped electrons with suitably chosen energy the transmission coefficient
is very sensitive to the qubit state. We further show that by using a short
sequence of pumping events, coupled with a simple feedback control procedure,

A comparison of optical and radar measurements of mesospheric winds and tides
Optical measurements of mesospheric winds by Fabry‐Perot spectrometers, FPSs, at Mawson, 67.6°S 62.9°E, and Davis, 68.6°S 78.0°E, Antarctica are compared with similar measurements obtained using a spaced‐antenna MF radar at Davis. The FPSs observed the OH emission. Different analysis procedures, used to determine the mean wind, and amplitude and phase of the semidiurnal tide, have been compared. At these latitudes the diurnal tide is weak and the semi‐diurnal tide, although highly variable in amplitude, is usually the dominant periodicity. When comparing the amplitude and phase of the semidiurnal tide good agreement is obtained between measurements by the two instruments
