Thermal-capillary model for Czochralski growth of semiconductor materials
The success of efficiently calculating the temperature field, crystal radius, melt mensicus, and melt/solid interface in the Czochralski crystal growth system by full finite-element solution of the government thermal-capillary model is demonstrated. The model predicts realistic response to changes in pull rate, melt volume, and the thermal field. The experimentally observed phenomena of interface flipping, bumping, and the difficulty maintaining steady-state growth as the melt depth decreases are explained by model results. These calculations will form the basis for the first quantitative picture of Cz crystal growth. The accurate depiction of the melt meniscus is important in calculating the crystal radius and solidification interface. The sensitivity of the results to the equilibrium growth angle place doubt on less sophisticated attempts to model the process without inclusion of the meniscus. Quantitative comparison with experiments should be possible once more representation of the radiation and view factors in the thermal system and the crucible are included. Extensions of the model in these directions are underway

Droplet ejection and sliding on a flapping film

Derby, Droplet departure and ejection on flapping films, AIP Advances, 7, 035014.Water recovery and subsequent reuse are required for human consumption as well as industrial, and agriculture applications. Moist air streams, such as cooling tower plumes and fog, represent opportunities for water harvesting. In this work, we investigate a flapping mechanism to increase droplet shedding on thin, hydrophobic films for two vibrational cases (e.g., ± 9 mm and 11 Hz; ± 2 mm and 100 Hz). Two main mechanisms removed water droplets from the flapping film: vibrational-induced coalescence/sliding and droplet ejection from the surface. Vibrations mobilized droplets on the flapping film, increasing the probability of coalescence with neighboring droplets leading to faster droplet growth. Droplet departure sizes of 1–2 mm were observed for flapping films,compared to 3–4 mm on stationary films, which solely relied on gravity for droplet removal. Additionally, flapping films exhibited lower percentage area coverage by water after a few seconds. The second removal mechanism, droplet ejection was analyzed with respect to surface wave formation and inertia. Smaller droplets (e.g., 1-mm diameter) were ejected at a higher frequency which is associated with a higher acceleration. Kinetic energy of the water was the largest contributor to energy required to flap the film, and low energy inputs (i.e., 3.3 W/m2) were possible. Additionally, self-flapping films could enable novel water collection and condensation with minimal energy input
Structuring and support by Alfven waves around prestellar cores
Observations of molecular clouds show the existence of starless, dense cores,
threaded by magnetic fields. Observed line widths indicate these dense
condensates to be embedded in a supersonically turbulent environment. Under
these conditions, the generation of magnetic waves is inevitable. In this
paper, we study the structure and support of a 1D plane-parallel,
self-gravitating slab, as a monochromatic, circularly polarized Alfven wave is
injected in its central plane. Dimensional analysis shows that the solution
must depend on three dimensionless parameters. To study the nonlinear,
turbulent evolution of such a slab, we use 1D high resolution numerical
simulations. For a parameter range inspired by molecular cloud observations, we
find the following. 1) A single source of energy injection is sufficient to
force persistent supersonic turbulence over several hydrostatic scale heights.
2) The time averaged spatial extension of the slab is comparable to the
extension of the stationary, analytical WKB solution. Deviations, as well as
the density substructure of the slab, depend on the wave-length of the injected
wave. 3) Energy losses are dominated by loss of Poynting-flux and increase with
increasing plasma beta. 4) Good spatial resolution is mandatory, making similar

Absolute and convective instabilities of parallel propagating circularly polarized Alfvén waves: numerical results
Context.The stability of parallel propagating circularly polarized Alfvén waves (pump waves) has been studied for more than four decades with the use of normal mode analysis. It is well known that the normal mode analysis does not answer the question if a pump wave looks stable or unstable in a particular reference frame. To answer this question it is necessary to find out if the instability is absolute or convective in this reference frame.
Aims.We extend our previous study of absolute and convective instabilities of pump waves with small amplitude to pump waves with arbitrary amplitude.
Methods.To study the absolute and convective instabilities of pump waves with arbitrary amplitude we numerically implement Brigg's method.
Results.We show that the wave is absolutely unstable in a reference frame moving with the velocity U with respect to the rest plasma if U satisfies the inequality Ul Ur) we study the signalling problem. We show that spatially amplifying waves exist only when the signalling frequency is in two symmetric frequency bands, and calculate the dependences of the boundaries of these bands on U for different values of a . We also obtain the dependences of the maximum spatial amplification rate on U for different values of a . The implication of these results on the interpretation of observational data from space missions is discussed. In particular, it is shown that circularly polarized Alfvén waves propagating in the solar wind are convectively unstable in a reference frame of any realistic spacecraft
No more A-/a/-apple: An Examination of Kindergarten and First Grade Phonics within a Progressive Framework
Examines the approach to teaching literacy taken by back to basics and progressive educators, and the role of phonics within each type of literacy program. The necessity and application of phonics for kindergarten and first grade children is discussed, grounded in the author\u27s experience teaching in a progressive private school and a back to basics charter school. I found from research and my experience, that phonics is a necessary component for any complete literacy program. In addition, learning phonics has a stronger and more positive effect on children\u27s early reading and writing when it is taught within a developmentally appropriate, experiential, and progressive approach to literacy (Cunningham & Allington, 2003; Pinnell & Fountas, 1998; Moustafa, 1997). A brief overview of progressive research on phonics and learning to read is included, as well as phonics- and phonemic awareness-based activities grouped by ability level and target skill. These activities are intended to provide a practical example of phonics within a progressive framework. Finally, the connection is made between ensuring quality literacy education for all children and the ongoing struggle for socioeconomic justice and equity in our society
A universal scaling law for the strength of metal micropillars and nanowires
The yield strength of sub-micron single-crystal metal pillars and wires increases with decreasing pillar diameter. Here, we show that the yield stress (resolved onto a slip system), σrss, scaled by shear modulus, μ, and the diameter, d, scaled by Burgers vector, b, shows the following universal correlation: σrss / μ = A (d / b)m; for face-centred cubic (fcc) metals A = 0.71 and m = -0.66. Data for Mo and a Mo alloy are found to approximately obey the fcc correlation, despite having a different crystal structure. © 2009 Acta Materialia Inc
Enhanced real-time pose estimation for closed-loop robotic manipulation of magnetically actuated capsule endoscopes
Pose estimation methods for robotically guided magnetic actuation of capsule endoscopes have recently enabled trajectory following and automation of repetitive endoscopic maneuvers. However, these methods face significant challenges in their path to clinical adoption including the presence of regions of magnetic field singularity, where the accuracy of the system degrades, and the need for accurate initialization of the capsule's pose. In particular, the singularity problem exists for any pose estimation method that utilizes a single source of magnetic field if the method does not rely on the motion of the magnet to obtain multiple measurements from different vantage points. We analyze the workspace of such pose estimation methods with the use of the point-dipole magnetic field model and show that singular regions exist in areas where the capsule is nominally located during magnetic actuation. Since the dipole model can approximate most magnetic field sources, the problem discussed herein pertains to a wider set of pose estimation techniques. We then propose a novel hybrid approach employing static and time-varying magnetic field sources and show that this system has no regions of singularity. The proposed system was experimentally validated for accuracy, workspace size, update rate and performance in regions of magnetic singularity. The system performed as well or better than prior pose estimation methods without requiring accurate initialization and was robust to magnetic singularity. Experimental demonstration of closed-loop control of a tethered magnetic device utilizing the developed pose estimation technique is provided to ascertain its suitability for robotically guided capsule endoscopy. Hence, advances in closed-loop control and intelligent automation of magnetically actuated capsule endoscopes can be further pursued toward clinical realization by employing this pose estimation system
