Two-dimensional readout of GEM detectors
The recently introduced Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) permits the amplification of electrons released by ionizing radiation in a gas by factors approaching ten thousand, larger gains can be obtained combining two GEMs in cascade. We describe methods for implementing two- and three-dimensional projective localization of radiation, with sub-millimeter accuracy, making use of specially manufactured and patterned pick-up electrodes. Easy to implement and flexible in the choice of the readout geometry, the technology has the distinctive advantage of allowing all pick-up electrodes to be kept at ground potential, thus substantially improving the system simplicity and reliability. Preliminary results demonstrating the two-dimensional imaging capability of the devices are provided and discussed, as well as future perspectives of development

An insulating grid spacer for large-area MICROMEGAS chambers
We present an original design for large area gaseous detectors based on the MICROMEGAS technology. This technology incorporates an insulating grid, sandwiched between the micro-mesh and the anode-pad plane, which provides an uniform 200 m amplification gap. The uniformity of the amplification gap thickness has been verified under several experimental conditions. The gain performances of the detector are presented and compared to the values obtained with detectors using cylindrical micro spacers. The new design presents several technical and financial advantages
Construction, test and commissioning of the triple-GEM tracking detector for COMPASS
The Small Area Tracking system of the COMPASS experiment at CERN includes a set of 20 large area, fast position-sensitive Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) detectors, designed to reliably operate in the harsh radiation environment of the experiment. We describe in detail the design, choice of materials, assembly procedures and quality controls used to manufacture the devices. The test procedure in the laboratory, the performance in test beams and in the initial commissioning phase in the experiment are presented and discussed
Risk factors for hemorrhagic cystitis after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in a letermovir-exposed CMV-free population receiving PTCy
Hemorrhagic cystitis (HC) is a highly impacting complication in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), occurring in 12%–37% of patients. The impact of transplant- and patient-specific variables has been described, with a possible role for JCV and BKV, which may be cooperating with cytomegalovirus (CMV). Here, we analyze 134 letermovir-exposed, CMV-free patients, treated with the same cyclophosphamide-based graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) prophylaxis, describing risk factors for HC. The overall incidence of HC was 23%. Patients with HLA mismatched transplant, higher comorbidity score, and receiving three alkylating agents with TBF (thiotepa, busulfan, and fludarabine) conditioning regimen had a higher risk of HC in multivariate analysis (OR: 4.48, 6.32, and 1.32, respectively). A HC-score including male gender, TBF conditioning, and HLA-mismatch stratifies the risk of HC in the first 100 days after HSCT. The role of BKV and JCV was not highly impacting in those patients, suggesting a possible synergistic effect between CMV and JCV in causing HC. HC can be interpreted as the combination of patient-related factors, chemotherapy-related toxicities—especially due to alkylating agents—and immunological elements
Factors Influencing the yield of progenitor cells in bone marrow aspiration concentrate—A retrospective analysis of 58 patients
This study aims to identify the role of subjective factors (age, sex, and comorbidities) and procedure-specific factors (aspiration volume) in influencing the yield of progenitor cells in bone marrow aspiration concentrate (BMAC) harvested from the iliac crest. A retrospective analysis was conducted on 58 patients (male:female = 31:27; mean age: 52.56 ± 18.14 years) who underwent BMAC therapy between January 2020 and June 2021. The factors analyzed include individual factors such as age, sex, and comorbid conditions, and procedural factors such as aspirate volume. The mononuclear cell (MNC) count and colony-forming unit (CFU) assay were used to assess the yield of progenitors in the aspirate. Pearson's correlation test was performed for the age, aspirate volume, and outcome parameters, such as MNC and CFU. We used the chi-square test to analyze the role of sex and comorbidities on cellular yield. The mean volume of aspirate used for BMAC therapy was 66.65 (±17.82) mL. The mean MNC count of the BMAC was 19.94 (±16.34) × 106 cells, which formed 11 (±12) CFUs. Evidence of statistically significant positive associations was noted between the CFUs developed from the BMAC and the MNC count within them (r = 0.95, p < 0.001). The sex of the individual did not play any significant role in MNC count (p = 0.092) or CFUs formed (p = 0.448). The age of the individual showed evidence of a statistically significant negative association with the MNC count (r = -0.681, p < 0.001) and CFUs (r = -0.693, p < 0.001), as did the aspiration volume with the MNC count (r = -0.740, p < 0.001) and CFUs (r = -0.629, p < 0.001). We also noted a significant reduction in the MNC count (p = 0.002) and CFUs formed (p = 0.004) when the patients presented comorbidities. Individual factors such as age, comorbid conditions, and procedure factors such as aspirate volume significantly affected the yield of progenitor cells in the BMAC. The sex of the individual did not influence the yield of progenitor cells in BMAC
COVID-19 and the emergence of virtual tourism in Indonesia: A sociological perspective
The Covid-19 pandemic has impacted the world with devastating socio-economic effects and the global tourism sector has been severely affected by it. A number of current studies have examined the size and form of these negative impacts on tourism but to date, there is lack of research exploring possible positive effects of the pandemic, especially in tourism. This study fills this gap as the purpose of this research is to understand how the pandemic has stimulated the development of virtual tourism and how this new form of tourism is performing. Moreover, this study aims to better understand the roles that structure and agency play in stimulating the emergence of virtual tourism. The study is largely qualitative in nature, using in-depth interviews and participant observation as methods of data collection. The study shows that the pandemic has stimulated technological innovation and the re-conceptualization of leisure-seeking behavior, resulting in the emergence of an Indonesian virtual tourism industry. Virtual tours are offered online, mostly via Zoom, where tourism images are displayed via Google Maps/Earth, photos, or short videos. By using structuration theory, this study shows that the pandemic, a single structure, plays a dual constraining/enabling role that has accelerated the emergence of virtual tourism. These dual roles are performed simultaneously; constraining traditional tourism forms and enabling new virtual forms. More specifically, these findings suggest that structures and agencies/actors represent dualism, as opposed to duality. This study shows that the structure (rules and resources) plays a dominant role in driving actors to innovate, triggering the emergence of virtual tourism
Molecular dynamics simulations reveal that AEDANS is an inert fluorescent probe for the study of membrane proteins
Computer simulations were carried out of a number of AEDANS-labeled single cysteine mutants of a small reference membrane protein, M13 major coat protein, covering 60% of its primary sequence. M13 major coat protein is a single membrane-spanning, α-helical membrane protein with a relatively large water-exposed region in the N-terminus. In 10-ns molecular dynamics simulations, we analyze the behavior of the AEDANS label and the native tryptophan, which were used as acceptor and donor in previous FRET experiments. The results indicate that AEDANS is a relatively inert environmental probe that can move unhindered through the lipid membrane when attached to a membrane protein
