Coarsening Dynamics of Granular Heaplets in Tapped Granular Layers
A semi-continuum model is introduced to study the dynamics of the formation
of granular heaplets in tapped granular layers. By taking into account the
energy dissipation of collisions and screening effects due to avalanches, this
model is able to reproduce qualitatively the pattern of these heaplets. Our
simulations show that the granular heaplets are characterised by an effective
surface tension which depends on the magnitude of the tapping intensity. Also,
we observe that there is a coarsening effect in that the average size of the
heaplets, V grows as the number of taps k increases. The growth law at
intermediate times can be fitted by a scaling function V ~ k^z but the range of
validity of the power law is limited by size effects. The growth exponent z
appears to diverge as the tapping intensity is increased.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Germline genetic variation in prostate susceptibility does not predict outcomes in the chemoprevention trials PCPT and SELECT
Background
The development of prostate cancer can be influenced by genetic and environmental factors. Numerous germline SNPs influence prostate cancer susceptibility. The functional pathways in which these SNPs increase prostate cancer susceptibility are unknown. Finasteride is currently not being used routinely as a chemoprevention agent but the long term outcomes of the PCPT trial are awaited. The outcomes of the SELECT trial have not recommended the use of chemoprevention in preventing prostate cancer. This study investigated whether germline risk SNPs could be used to predict outcomes in the PCPT and SELECT trial.
Methods
Genotyping was performed in European men entered into the PCPT trial (n = 2434) and SELECT (n = 4885). Next generation genotyping was performed using Affymetrix® Eureka™ Genotyping protocols. Logistic regression models were used to test the association of risk scores and the outcomes in the PCPT and SELECT trials.
Results
Of the 100 SNPs, 98 designed successfully and genotyping was validated for samples genotyped on other platforms. A number of SNPs predicted for aggressive disease in both trials. Men with a higher polygenic score are more likely to develop prostate cancer in both trials, but the score did not predict for other outcomes in the trial.
Conclusion
Men with a higher polygenic risk score are more likely to develop prostate cancer. There were no interactions of these germline risk SNPs and the chemoprevention agents in the SELECT and PCPT trials
Nonlocal evolution of weighted scale-free networks
We introduce the notion of globally updating evolution for a class of
weighted networks, in which the weight of a link is characterized by the amount
of data packet transport flowing through it. By noting that the packet
transport over the network is determined nonlocally, this approach can explain
the generic nonlinear scaling between the strength and the degree of a node. We
demonstrate by a simple model that the strength-driven evolution scheme
recently introduced can be generalized to a nonlinear preferential attachment
rule, generating the power-law behaviors in degree and in strength

Emergence of weight-topology correlations in complex scale-free networks
Different weighted scale-free networks show weights-topology correlations
indicated by the non linear scaling of the node strength with node
connectivity. In this paper we show that networks with and without
weight-topology correlations can emerge from the same simple growth dynamics of
the node connectivities and of the link weights. A weighted fitness network is
introduced in which both nodes and links are assigned intrinsic fitness. This
model can show a local dependence of the weight-topology correlations and can
undergo a phase transition to a state in which the network is dominated by few
links which acquire a finite fraction of the total weight of the network.Comment: (4 pages,3 figures
Non-close-packed breath figures via ion-partitioning-mediated self-assembly
We report a one-step method of forming non-close-packed (NCP) pore arrays of micro- and sub-micropores using chloroform-based solutions of polystyrene acidified with hydrogen bromide for breath figure (BF) patterning. As BF patterning takes place, water vapor condenses onto the polystyrene solution, forming water droplets on the solution surface. Concurrently, preferential ion partitioning of hydrogen bromide leads to positively charged water droplets, which experience interdroplet electrostatic repulsion. Self-organization of charged water droplets because of surface flow and subsequent evaporation of the droplet templates result in ordered BF arrays with pore separation/diameter (L/D) ratios of up to 16.5. Evidence from surface potential scans show proof for preferential ion partitioning of HBr. Radial distribution functions and Voronoi polygon analysis of pore arrays show that they possess a high degree of conformational order. Past fabrication methods of NCP structures typically require multi-step processes. In contrast, we have established a new route for facile self-assembly of previously inaccessible patterns, which comprises of only a single operational step
Analytic solution of a static scale-free network model
We present a detailed analytical study of a paradigmatic scale-free network
model, the Static Model. Analytical expressions for its main properties are
derived by using the hidden variables formalism. We map the model into a
canonic hidden variables one, and solve the latter. The good agreement between
our predictions and extensive simulations of the original model suggests that
the mapping is exact in the infinite network size limit. One of the most
remarkable findings of this study is the presence of relevant disassortative
correlations, which are induced by the physical condition of absence of self

Controllable Rashba spin-orbit interaction in artificially engineered superlattices involving the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn5
By using a molecular beam epitaxy technique, we fabricate a new type of
superconducting superlattices with controlled atomic layer thicknesses of
alternating blocks between heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn_5, which
exhibits a strong Pauli pair-breaking effect, and nonmagnetic metal YbCoIn_5.
The introduction of the thickness modulation of YbCoIn_5 block layers breaks
the inversion symmetry centered at the superconducting block of CeCoIn_5. This
configuration leads to dramatic changes in the temperature and angular
dependence of the upper critical field, which can be understood by considering
the effect of the Rashba spin-orbit interaction arising from the inversion
symmetry breaking and the associated weakening of the Pauli pair-breaking
effect. Since the degree of thickness modulation is a design feature of this
type of superlattices, the Rashba interaction and the nature of pair-breaking
are largely tunable in these modulated superlattices with strong spin-orbit
