Solar-cycle variation of the sound-speed asphericity from GONG and MDI data 1995-2000
We study the variation of the frequency splitting coefficients describing the
solar asphericity in both GONG and MDI data, and use these data to investigate
temporal sound-speed variations as a function of both depth and latitude during
the period from 1995-2000 and a little beyond. The temporal variations in even
splitting coefficients are found to be correlated to the corresponding
component of magnetic flux at the solar surface. We confirm that the
sound-speed variations associated with the surface magnetic field are
superficial. Temporally averaged results show a significant excess in sound
speed around 0.92 solar radii and latitude of 60 degrees.Comment: To be published in MNRAS, accepted July 200
Antiferromagnetic Alignment and Relaxation Rate of Gd Spins in the High Temperature Superconductor GdBa_2Cu_3O_(7-delta)
The complex surface impedance of a number of GdBaCuO
single crystals has been measured at 10, 15 and 21 GHz using a cavity
perturbation technique. At low temperatures a marked increase in the effective
penetration depth and surface resistance is observed associated with the
paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic alignment of the Gd spins. The effective
penetration depth has a sharp change in slope at the N\'eel temperature, ,
and the surface resistance peaks at a frequency dependent temperature below 3K.
The observed temperature and frequency dependence can be described by a model
which assumes a negligibly small interaction between the Gd spins and the
electrons in the superconducting state, with a frequency dependent magnetic
susceptibility and a Gd spin relaxation time being a strong function

Saving for retirement: a review of ethnic minorities in the UK
This article examines the saving behaviour of ethnic minorities in the UK. Within the context of pension planning, we investigate saving for retirement patterns in relation to ethnicity, gender and age. We use data from the Family Resources Survey (FRS) to analyse employment status, income, saving types and levels. Although we find profound heterogeneity, ethnic minorities show higher levels of unemployment, lower income and consistently lower levels of saving for retirement compared to our white control group. Disadvantages of ethnic minorities during their working life persist, especially for women, although to a lesser extent than in the past, and continue to affect private savings and prospective retirement income. Indian and Chinese men have experienced the greatest improvements in terms of employment status and income and this is reflected in higher levels of saving for retirement since the mid 1990s
Global shallow water magnetohydrodynamic waves in the solar tachocline
We derive analytical solutions and dispersion relations of global magnetic
Poincar\'e (magneto-gravity) and magnetic Rossby waves in the approximation of
shallow water magnetohydrodynamics. The solutions are obtained in a rotating
spherical coordinate system for strongly and weakly stable stratification
separately in the presence of toroidal magnetic field. In both cases magnetic
Rossby waves split into fast and slow magnetic Rossby modes. In the case of
strongly stable stratification (valid in the radiative part of the tachocline)
all waves are slightly affected by the layer thickness and the toroidal
magnetic field, while in the case of weakly stable stratification (valid in the
upper overshoot layer of the tachocline) magnetic Poincar\'e and fast magnetic
Rossby waves are found to be concentrated near the solar equator, leading to
equatorially trapped waves. However, slow magnetic Rossby waves tend to
concentrate near the poles, leading to polar trapped waves. The frequencies of
all waves are smaller in the upper weakly stable stratification region than in
the lower strongly stable stratification one
