    The winner's curse: experiments with buyers and with sellers

    This paper explores the winner's curse phenomena as it was studied experimentally by Kagel and Levin. Experiments with the winner's curse are complicated by the fact that subjects can lose money and the experimenter has only a limited means of collecting it from them. Thus subjects enjoy only limited liability which has theoretical implications for behavior. In the Kagel and Levin experiments subjects were removed from the bidders' competition after losses reached a predetermined value. This experimental procedure has unknown implications for the results so ambiguity exists about whether the winner's curse was actually observed. In this study their results were replicated in an environment in which subjects were not removed. The case in which competitors are sellers is also studied. Bankruptcy cannot be a problem in sellers' competition. In both cases the winner's curse is observed. Thus the limited liability cannot be an explanation for the phenomenon reported by Kagel and Levin. In addition the paper examines the bidding behavior of all individuals and shows that this behavior does not fit any of the tested theories either on the aggregate or individual level. The "winner's curse" did not disappear over time during the conduct of the research

Three different regimes of laser emission are observed corresponding respectively to Mollow, Raman and Four Wave Mixing mechanisms. We measure an output power of up to 300 μ\muW and present the main properties of these different lasers in each regime

    This paper presents a replication and extension of experiments with the "winner's curse" which were initiated in John Kagel and Dan Levin (1984, 1986) and Douglas Dyer et al. (1989). The common-value auction involves firms bidding for an item of unknown common value. Since the value of the item is unknown, the winners can bid more than the value and thereby lose money. The winner's curse occurs if the winners of auctions systematically bid above the actual value of the objects and thereby systematically incur losses. The phenomenon is said to occur possibly in the bidding for such natural resources as mineral rights, where the value of the mineral is unknown but each firm has an estimate of the value. Due to the field nature of the data, doubts have existed as to the actual existence of the curse. The Kagel and Levin (1986) paper tested for the existence of the phenomenon in a laboratory setting. The hope is that, by achieving a thorough understanding of the phenomenon as it might exist in simple laboratory environments, economists will become better equipped to identify and study the phenomenon in more-complex field settings

    Effective temperature determinations of late-type stars based on 3D non-LTE Balmer line formation

    Hydrogen Balmer lines are commonly used as spectroscopic effective temperature diagnostics of late-type stars. However, the absolute accuracy of classical methods that are based on one-dimensional (1D) hydrostatic model atmospheres and local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) is still unclear. To investigate this, we carry out 3D non-LTE calculations for the Balmer lines, performed, for the first time, over an extensive grid of 3D hydrodynamic STAGGER model atmospheres. For Hα\alpha, Hβ\beta, and Hγ\gamma, we find significant 1D non-LTE versus 3D non-LTE differences (3D effects): the outer wings tend to be stronger in 3D models, particularly for Hγ\gamma, while the inner wings can be weaker in 3D models, particularly for Hα\alpha. For Hα\alpha, we also find significant 3D LTE versus 3D non-LTE differences (non-LTE effects): in warmer stars (Teff6500T_{\text{eff}}\approx6500K) the inner wings tend to be weaker in non-LTE models, while at lower effective temperatures (Teff4500T_{\text{eff}}\approx4500K) the inner wings can be stronger in non-LTE models; the non-LTE effects are more severe at lower metallicities. We test our 3D non-LTE models against observations of well-studied benchmark stars. For the Sun, we infer concordant effective temperatures from Hα\alpha, Hβ\beta, and Hγ\gamma; however the value is too low by around 50K which could signal residual modelling shortcomings. For other benchmark stars, our 3D non-LTE models generally reproduce the effective temperatures to within 1σ1\sigma uncertainties. For Hα\alpha, the absolute 3D effects and non-LTE effects can separately reach around 100K, in terms of inferred effective temperatures. For metal-poor turn-off stars, 1D LTE models of Hα\alpha can underestimate effective temperatures by around 150K.     Fe I Oscillator Strengths for the Gaia-ESO Survey

    The Gaia-ESO Public Spectroscopic Survey (GES) is conducting a large-scale study of multi-element chemical abundances of some 100 000 stars in the Milky Way with the ultimate aim of quantifying the formation history and evolution of young, mature and ancient Galactic populations. However, in preparing for the analysis of GES spectra, it has been noted that atomic oscillator strengths of important Fe I lines required to correctly model stellar line intensities are missing from the atomic database. Here, we present new experimental oscillator strengths derived from branching fractions and level lifetimes, for 142 transitions of Fe I between 3526 {\AA} and 10864 {\AA}, of which at least 38 are urgently needed by GES. We also assess the impact of these new data on solar spectral synthesis and demonstrate that for 36 lines that appear unblended in the Sun, Fe abundance measurements yield a small line-by-line scatter (0.08 dex) with a mean abundance of 7.44 dex in good agreement with recent publications.Comment: Accepted for publication in Mon.     Voice Flows To And Around Leaders: Understanding When Units Are Helped Or Hurt By Employee Voice

    In two studies, we develop and test theory about the relationship between speaking up, one type of organizational citizenship behavior, and unit performance by accounting for where employee voice is flowing. Results from a qualitative study of managers and professionals across a variety of industries suggest that voice to targets at different formal power levels (peers or superiors) and locations in the organization (inside or outside a focal unit) differs systematically in terms of its usefulness in generating actions to a unit's benefit on the issues raised and in the likely information value of the ideas expressed. We then theorize how distinct voice flows should be differentially related to unit performance based on these core characteristics and test our hypotheses using time-lagged field data from 801 employees and their managers in 93 units across nine North American credit unions. Results demonstrate that voice flows are positively related to a unit's effectiveness when they are targeted at the focal leader of that unitwho should be able to take actionwhether from that leader's own subordinates or those in other units, and negatively related to a unit's effectiveness when they are targeted at coworkers who have little power to effect change. Together, these studies provide a structural framework for studying the nature and impact of multiple voice flows, some along formal reporting lines and others that reflect the informal communication structure within organizations. This research demonstrates that understanding the potential performance benefits and costs of voice for leaders and their units requires attention to the structure and complexity of multiple voice flows rather than to an undifferentiated amount of voice.Business Administratio

    Precision wave-length measurements of the 1.1- and 1.3-Mev lines of CO60 with the two-meter focusing curved-crystal spectrometer

    Recent improvements in the two-meter focusing curved-crystal gamma-ray spectrometer are described which have extended its quantum energy range well above 1 Mev and have also yielded much better luminosity and resolving power than were obtained initially. The improved components are (1) the crystal holder whose aperture and resolving power have been nearly doubled and (2) the collimator the new model of which can now discriminate between the reflected and transmitted beams when these differ in direction by only 8 minutes of arc, a threefold improvement over our first model. Our plans for further possible improvements and the factors governing these are also discussed. Wavelengths of two gamma-rays emitted following β-decay of Co60 have been measured with this new equipment using a source of about 50 mc strength and found to have values of (9.308±0.005)×10-11 cm and (10.580±0.005)×10-11 cm corresponding to quantum energies of 1.3316±0.0010 Mev and 1.1715±0.0010 Mev, respectively. The lines appear to have equal intensities. The integrated reflection coefficient of the (310) planes of the curved-quartz crystal still appears to follow a λ2-dependence on wave-length down to 9 x.u. the shortest so far observed
