    Homogeneity in Luxury Fashion Consumption: an Exploration of Arab Women

    Consumer perceptions and consumer motivations are complex and whilst it is acknowledged within literature that heterogeneity exists, homogenous models dominate consumer behaviour research. The primary purpose of this paper is to explore the extent to which Arab women are a homogeneous group of consumers in regard to perceptions and motivations to consume luxury fashion goods. In particular, the paper seeks to present a critical review of luxury consumption frameworks. As part of the research design, Vigneron and Johnson’s (1999) prestige seeking behaviour framework was selected as a means for empirical investigation. The study’s findings suggest that distinct value perceptions of luxury fashion among Arab females are evident, that is, this group of consumers are homogeneous in terms of prestige seeking behaviour. Homogeneity can be explained by the existence of interpersonal motives for luxury consumption. The findings of the study highlight that Arab women, many of whom wear the abaya ‘cloak’ when in public, seek to pursue mutual socially conforming consumption behaviours through luxury fashion. The study has both academic and practitioner implications. Firstly, the study contributes to fulfilling a gap in consumer behaviour literature, that being, an understanding of female consumption behaviour regarding luxury goods in the Arab world. Secondly, in terms of practitioner implications, the findings support retail marketing decisions in regard to profiling distinct consumer groups of Arab females, which luxury marketers can target with discrete marketing communications

    Post-Purchase Consumer Behaviour, Sustainability and its Influence on Fashion Identity

    The paper aims to explore how sustainability may be used as a form of self-expression, and whether it can endow individuals with an identity associated with ethical consumption at the post purchase consumption stage. Exploratory research was undertaken to investigate sustaining decisions and sustainability practices. It draws upon Jacoby et al.’s disposition model to explore factors extrinsic and intrinsic to the product in relation to fashion clothing sustainability and identity formation. Mixed qualitative methods were employed. The study’s findings indicate that clothing and fashion post-purchase sustainability relates to high level of involvement with the clothing and fashion item together with product attributes, benefits and situational factors relating to the product. A conclusion of the study is that an expressed ethical identity does not mean that individuals will behave in an ethical manner. Rather other identities emerged relevant to the individuals self concept and image

    A New Catalog of HII Regions in M31

    We present a new catalog of HII regions in M31. The full disk of the galaxy is covered in a 2.2 deg^2 mosaic of 10 fields observed with the Mosaic Camera as part of the Local Group Galaxies survey. We used HIIphot, a code for automated photometry of HII regions, to identify the regions and measure their fluxes and sizes. A 10 {\sigma} detection level was used to exclude diffuse gas fluctuations and star residuals after continuum subtraction. That selection limit may result in missing some faint HII regions, but our catalog of 3691 HII regions is still complete to a luminosity of LH{\alpha} = 10^34 erg/s. This is five times fainter than the only previous CCD-based study which contained 967 objects in the NE half of M31. We determined the H{\alpha} luminosity function (LF) by fitting a power law to luminosities larger than LH{\alpha} = 10^36.7 and determined a slope of 2.52\pm0.07. The in-arm and inter-arm LFs peak at different luminosities but they have similar bright-end slopes. The inter- arm regions are less populated (40% of total detected regions) and constitute only 14% of the total luminosity of LH{\alpha} = 5.6 /times 10^40 erg/s (after extinction correction and considering 65% contribution from diffused ionized gas). A star formation rate of 0.44 M\odot/yr was estimated from the H{\alpha} total luminosity; this value is consistent with the determination from the Spitzer 8 {\mu}m image. We removed all known and potential planetary nebulae, yet we found a double peaked luminosity function. The inter-arm older population suggests a starburst between 15 and 20 million years ago. This result is in agreement with UV studies of the star formation history in M31 which found a star formation rate decrease in the recent past. We found a fair spatial correlation between the HII regions and stellar clusters in selected star forming regions.     An asymptotic series in Ramanujan's second notebook (Entry 10, Chapter 3) is concerned with the behavior of the expected value of ϕ(X)\phi(X) for large λ\lambda where XX is a Poisson random variable with mean λ\lambda and ϕ\phi is a function satisfying certain growth conditions. We generalize this by studying the asymptotics of the expected value of ϕ(X)\phi(X) when the distribution of XX belongs to a suitable family indexed by a convolution parameter.     Large halloween asteroid at lunar distance

    The near-Earth asteroid (NEA) 2015 TB had a very close encounter with Earth at 1.3 lunar distances on October 31, 2015. We obtained 3-band mid-infrared observations of this asteroid with the ESO VLT-VISIR instrument covering approximately four hours in total. We also monitored the visual lightcurve during the close-encounter phase. The NEA has a (most likely) rotation period of 2.939 ± 0.005 h and the visual lightcurve shows a peak-to-peak amplitude of approximately 0.12 ± 0.02 mag. A second rotation period of 4.779 ± 0.012 h, with an amplitude of the Fourier fit of 0.10 ± 0.02 mag, also seems compatible with the available lightcurve measurements. We estimate a V-R colour of 0.56 ± 0.05 mag from different entries in the MPC database. A reliable determination of the object's absolute magnitude was not possible. Applying different phase relations to the available R-/V-band observations produced H = 18.6 mag (standard H-G calculations) or H = 19.2 mag and H = 19.8 mag (via the H-G procedure for sparse and low-quality data), with large uncertainties of approximately 1 mag. We performed a detailed thermophysical model analysis by using spherical and partially also ellipsoidal shape models. The thermal properties are best explained by an equator-on (± 30°) viewing geometry during our measurements with a thermal inertia in the range 250-700 J m s K (retrograde rotation) or above 500 J m s K (prograde rotation). We find that the NEA has a minimum size of approximately 625 m, a maximum size of just below 700 m, and a slightly elongated shape with a/b 1.1. The best match to all thermal measurements is found for: (i) thermal inertia Γ = 900 J m s K; D = 644 m, p = 5.5% (prograde rotation with 2.939 h); regolith grain sizes of 50-100 mm; (ii) thermal inertia Γ = 400 J m s K; D = 667 m, p = 5.1% (retrograde rotation with 2.939 h); regolith grain sizes of 10-20 mm. A near-Earth asteroid model (NEATM) confirms an object size well above 600 m (best NEATM solution at 690 m, beaming parameter η = 1.95), significantly larger than early estimates based on radar measurements. In general, a high-quality physical and thermal characterisation of a close-encounter object from two-week apparition data is not easily possible.     Energy efficiency considerations in integrated IT and optical network resilient infrastructures

    The European Integrated Project GEYSERS - Generalised Architecture for Dynamic Infrastructure Services - is concentrating on infrastructures incorporating integrated optical network and IT resources in support of the Future Internet with special emphasis on cloud computing. More specifically GEYSERS proposes the concept of Virtual Infrastructures over one or more interconnected Physical Infrastructures comprising both network and IT resources. Taking into consideration the energy consumption levels associated with the ICT today and the expansion of the Internet in size and complexity, that incurring increased energy consumption of both IT and network resources, energy efficient infrastructure design becomes critical. To address this need, in the framework of GEYSERS, we propose energy efficient design of infrastructures incorporating integrated optical network and IT resources, supporting resilient end-to-end services. Our modeling results quantify significant energy savings of the proposed solution by jointly optimizing the allocation of both network and IT resources
