Vertical shear instability in accretion disc models with radiation transport

The origin of turbulence in accretion discs is still not fully understood. While the magneto-rotational instability is considered to operate in sufficiently ionized discs, its role in the poorly ionized protoplanetary disc is questionable. Recently, the vertical shear instability (VSI) has been suggested as a possible alternative. Our goal is to study the characteristics of this instability and the efficiency of angular momentum transport, in extended discs, under the influence of radiative transport and irradiation from the central star. We use multi-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations to model a larger section of an accretion disc. First we study inviscid and weakly viscous discs using a fixed radial temperature profile in two and three spatial dimensions. The simulations are then extended to include radiative transport and irradiation from the central star. In agreement with previous studies we find for the isothermal disc a sustained unstable state with a weak positive angular momentum transport of the order of α104\alpha \approx 10^{-4}. Under the inclusion of radiative transport the disc cools off and the turbulence terminates. For discs irradiated from the central star we find again a persistent instability with a similar α\alpha value as for the isothermal case. We find that the VSI can indeed generate sustained turbulence in discs albeit at a relatively low level with α\alpha about few times 10410^{-4}Comment: 12 pages, 24 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysic

Complexity in parametric Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonians and structural analysis of eigenstates

We consider a family of chaotic Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonians (BHH) parameterized by the coupling strength kk between neighboring sites. As kk increases the eigenstates undergo changes, reflected in the structure of the Local Density of States. We analyze these changes, both numerically and analytically, using perturbative and semiclassical methods. Although our focus is on the quantum trimer, the presented methodology is applicable for the analysis of longer lattices as well.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

Orbital Order and Spontaneous Orthorhombicity in Iron Pnictides

A growing list of experiments show orthorhombic electronic anisotropy in the iron pnictides, in some cases at temperatures well above the spin density wave transition. These experiments include neutron scattering, resistivity and magnetoresistance measurements, and a variety of spectroscopies. We explore the idea that these anisotropies stem from a common underlying cause: orbital order manifest in an unequal occupation of dxzd_{xz} and dyzd_{yz} orbitals, arising from the coupled spin-orbital degrees of freedom. We emphasize the distinction between the total orbital occupation (the integrated density of states), where the order parameter may be small, and the orbital polarization near the Fermi level which can be more pronounced. We also discuss light-polarization studies of angle-resolved photoemission, and demonstrate how x-ray absorption linear dichroism may be used as a method to detect an orbital order parameter.Comment: Orig.: 4+ pages; Rev.: 4+ pages with updated content and reference
