Lo spazio sonoro come luogo di recupero della memoria nella terza età
The link between music and education has always inspired many different thoughts and pedagogical practices. In this paper this link is analyzed on two different levels. The first is strictly theoretical and relates to the interdisciplinary fields of pedagogy, focusing particularly on the approach of biopedagogy, psychology of music and neuroscience. The second one concerns empirical research carried out in the field of Medical Pedagogy in the Epistemology and Educational Practices Laboratory at the University of Naples Federico II. These practices are designed to recall implicit memory in pathological and non-pathological elderly people. In the end, the focus will be on the strategy of Musical Autobiography which is the object of current international research, coordinated by the author, in the context of intervention for the pedagogical rehabilitation of patients with Alzheimer’s disease.
Mitigation of the Environmental Impacts of Lithium Extraction and Lithium Battery Manufacturing
Lithium extraction and the production methods utilized for lithium-ion batteries can have a large impact on the areas directly surrounding them, and if not mitigated properly, the rest of the world as well. For these batteries to be produced, lithium must be mined and refined from sources all around the world. The main concern of lithium mines is their impact on the water cycle and the surrounding water tables due to the heavy metals involved in the process and the sheer amount of water required. Production of the batteries themselves using the lithium slurry is far less impactful on the environment, however, the process does require power and ensuring that the power used comes from renewable and sustainable sources is paramount. Mitigation techniques should be implemented within both aspects of lithium-ion battery production to ensure that the benefits of this technology are not outweighed by the detriments
Use of DPP4 inhibitors in Italy does not correlate with diabetes prevalence among COVID-19 deaths
In a nationwide study of 3,818 charts from patients with fatal COVID-19, we found that geographical differences in Dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP4) inhibitors use did not correlate with diabetes prevalence among COVID-19 deaths, thus not supporting the hypothesis of a clinically relevant involvement of DPP4 in COVID-19 development and progression

INFOGRAPHIC MODELING BASED ON 3D LASER SURVEYING FOR INFORMED UNIVERSAL DESIGN IN ARCHAEOLOGICAL AREAS: THE CASE OF OPPIDUM OF THE ANCIENT CITY OF TUSCULUM
The valorisation of archaeological sites represents a fundamental action for the social and economic development of a country. An archaeological park is often a territory characterized by significant testimonies of antiquity of great landscape value. For this reason, it should be configured as an authentic outdoor museum, enriched by natural, environmental, architectural and urban components. In order to fulfill these requirements, it is fundamental the elaboration of a coherent scientific project of preservation, fruition and valorisation of the area, which merge the different components necessary for the establishment of an archaeological museum-park. One of the most critical aspects related to the fruition of archaeological sites is the accessibility to areas and routes, not always – if ever – designed for people with reduced mobility, also temporary (for example elderly, obese, visually impaired, etc.). In general, an established principle used in the new design is to pay attention to the so-called wide users, in accordance with the international guidelines summarized in the concept of Universal Design. In particular, this paper presents the use of three-dimensional models obtained from laser scanning surveys for the design of walking trails for people with reduced mobility in the Tusculum Archaeological-Cultural Park. The work was based on the fundamental implementation of the three-dimensional survey with terrestrial laser scanning for the construction and the control of the complex morphology of the site, and on the subsequent integration of models of the intervention in the three-dimensional reality "as-built" of the site. The obtained infographic model allowed to study and simulate the impact of the routes for people with reduced mobility, and to verify its efficiency in the historical and landscape context. Moreover, it was possible to verify the construction of other facilities in the real conditions of the site
Randomised short-term trial of high-span versus low-span APAP for treating sleep apnoea
PURPOSE: Auto-titrating continuous positive airway pressure (APAP) devices were developed to improve treatment efficacy and compliance in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS). Since there are insufficient data on the optimal pressure range setting, we aimed to compare the adherence, efficacy and tolerability of treatment with high-span versus low-span APAP.
METHODS:
Seventy-six newly diagnosed OSAS patients fulfilling the treatment criteria were randomised to receive high-span (HS, range 4-15cmH2O, n?=?38) or low-span (LS, range 8-12cmH2O, n?=?38) APAP. Patients were assessed at 1 and 3 months.
RESULTS:
Median Epworth sleepiness scale (ESS) was 13 (IQR, 6-16) and median apnoea-hypopnoea index (AHI) was 35.9 (IQR, 27.6-56.3). There were no significant differences in baseline demographic and clinical characteristics between groups. Overall, no significant differences were found at the first month assessment. After 3 months of therapy, we found again no differences in residual AHI or ESS. However, the group HS proved less adherent than group LS, respectively, with median 87 % (IQR, 60.5-97.5) versus 94 % (IQR, 80.0-98.3) of the nights using =4 h (P?=?0.014) and mean (±SD) usage 5.7?±?1.6 versus 6.4?±?1.2 h/night (P?=?0.049). The group HS reported more frequently nasal congestion, excessive oronasal dryness and nocturnal awakenings of at least moderate intensity, the latter with statistical significance (P?=?0.005).
CONCLUSIONS:
Both pressure ranges appear to be equally effective to correct AHI and to improve symptoms. Though, patients with high-span APAP were less compliant to treatment, raising issues about the tolerability of wide pressure range settings of these devices.T Pinto has received financial support from Linde and Vitalaire (Healthcare Providers) for attending symposia and honoraria for speaking at symposia from Philips.
