    Advanced crew procedures development techniques

    The development of an operational computer program, the Procedures and Performance Program (PPP), is reported which provides a procedures recording and crew/vehicle performance monitoring capability. The PPP provides real time CRT displays and postrun hardcopy of procedures, difference procedures, performance, performance evaluation, and training script/training status data. During post-run, the program is designed to support evaluation through the reconstruction of displays to any point in time. A permanent record of the simulation exercise can be obtained via hardcopy output of the display data, and via magnetic tape transfer to the Generalized Documentation Processor (GDP). Reference procedures data may be transferred from the GDP to the PPP

    The magnitude of educational disadvantage amongst indigenous minority groups in Australia.

    Indigenous groups are amongst the most disadvantaged minority groups in the developed world. This paper examines the educational disadvantage of indigenous Australians by assessing academic performance at a relatively early age. We find that, by the age of 10, indigenous Australians are substantially behind non-indigenous Australians in academic achievement. Their relative performance deteriorates further over the next 2 years. School and locality do not appear to be important determinants of the indigenous to non-indigenous achievement gap. However, geographic remoteness, indigenous ethnicity and language use at home have a marked influence on educational achievement. A current focus of Australian indigenous policy is to increase school resources. Our results suggest that this will not eliminate indigenous educational disadvantage on its own

    Rotational cooling of heteronuclear molecular ions with ^1-Sigma, ^2-Sigma, ^3-Sigma and ^2-Pi electronic ground states

    The translational motion of molecular ions can be effectively cooled sympathetically to translational temperatures below 100 mK in ion traps through Coulomb interactions with laser-cooled atomic ions. The ro-vibrational degrees of freedom, however, are expected to be largely unaffected during translational cooling. We have previously proposed schemes for cooling of the internal degrees of freedom of such translationally cold but internally hot heteronuclear diatomic ions in the simplest case of ^1-Sigma electronic ground state molecules. Here we present a significant simplification of these schemes and make a generalization to the most frequently encountered electronic ground states of heteronuclear molecular ions: ^1-Sigma, ^2-Sigma, ^3-Sigma and ^2-Pi. The schemes are relying on one or two laser driven transitions with the possible inclusion of a tailored incoherent far infrared radiation field.Comment: 16 pages, 13 figure

    Government Program Decision Analysis in Nebraska at the Farm Level

    The one-year extension of the 2018 Farm Bill until September 30, 2024, has extended several government programs for the 2024 crop year including those in Title I: Commodities. This analysis looks at three different financial scenarios and analyzes five different alternatives for a case farm to select the optimal farm program decision for the operation by evaluating net farm income. Since 2021, eligible producers have been able to elect either Agriculture Risk Coverage (ARC) or Price Loss Coverage (PLC) for their operation on an annual basis. Support levels for these programs are trending close together making the election decision more complex this year as opposed to previous years. Utilizing a case farm in Gage County Nebraska that is representative of a typical operation in the county provides the framework for farm level analysis of farm program decisions. The case farm consists of irrigated and non-irrigated corn and soybean enterprises. Analyzing the relevant data at the national, state, and county levels and drawing on correlations and distributional assumptions to simulate farm level data provides the necessary parameters to analyze farm program decisions eligible producers can make. Results and conclusions based on this simulation for the 2024 crop year indicate the combination of farm program decisions and crop insurance that provides the optimal balance of risk and return for a risk-averse producer. Program decisions reflect current legislation laid out in the 2018 Farm Bill. The programs could change with future farm bill legislation, extension, or elimination, leaving the need for continued farm level research. The alternatives in this analysis based on different financial scenarios for the case farm include crop insurance and production practices that reflect similar operations in Gage County. Results could vary for farms with different acres, enterprises, and locations, but this analysis provides a framework for a stochastic simulation for farm level analysis that could be adapted for other farms, crops, farm programs, or years.     Fundamental Vibrational Transition of CO During the Outburst of EX Lupi in 2008

    We report monitoring observations of the T Tauri star EX Lupi during its outburst in 2008 in the CO fundamental band at 4.6–5.0 μm. The observations were carried out at the Very Large Telescope and the Subaru Telescope at six epochs from 2008 April to August, covering the plateau of the outburst and the fading phase to a quiescent state. The line flux of CO emission declines with the visual brightness of the star and the continuum flux at 5 μm, but composed of two subcomponents that decay with different rates. The narrow-line emission (50 kms^(−1) in FWHM) is near the systemic velocity of EX Lupi. These emission lines appear exclusively in v =1–0. The line widths translate to a characteristic orbiting radius of 0.4 AU. The broad-line component (FWZI ~ 150 km s^(−1)) is highly excited up to v ≤ 6. The line flux of the component decreases faster than the narrow-line emission. Simple modeling of the line profiles implies that the broad-line emitting gas is orbiting around the star at 0.04–0.4 AU. The excitation state, the decay speed of the line flux, and the line profile indicate that the broad-line emission component is physically distinct from the narrow-line emission component, and more tightly related to the outburst event

    This article focuses on the relationship between social justice, emotionality and mathematics teaching in the context of the education of prospective teachers of mathematics. A relational approach to social justice calls for giving attention to enacting socially-just relationships in mathematics classrooms. Emotionality and social justice in teaching mathematics variously intersect, interrelate or interweave. An intervention, usng creative action methods, with a cohort of prospective teachers addressing these issues is described to illustrate the connection between emotionality and social justice in the context of mathematics teacher education. Creative action methods involve a variety of dramatic, interactive and experiential tools that can promote personal and group engagement and embodied reflection. The intervention aimed to engage the prospective teachers with some key issues for social justice in mathematics education through dialogue about the emotionality of teaching and learning mathematics. Some of the possibilities and limits of using such methods are considered
