An analysis and synthesis of lunar mascon hypotheses based on current accumulated lunar knowledge
Lunar mascons were first discovered from the tracking data of Lunar Orbiter V. Since their discovery, numerous hypothesis have been formulated to explain their origin and estimate their below-surface characteristics. As new data from Apollo missions are analyzed, various hypothesis have been altered, some new ones have been added, some old ones have been dropped. In this paper, the author summarizes the current factual knowledge on lunar mascons. The most recent hypothesis are then presented, and tested against the facts. Finally, a compromise hypothesis is synthesized from the most tenable points of the current hypothesis.No embarg

A method for the production of reticles, particularly those for use in outer space, where the product is a quartz base coated with highly adherent layers of chromium, chromium-silver, and silver vacuum deposited through a mask, and then coated with an electrodeposit of copper from a copper sulfate solution followed by an electrodeposit of black chromium is described. The masks are produced by coating a beryllium-copper alloy substrate with a positive working photoresist, developing the photoresist, according to a pattern to leave a positive mask, plating uncoated areas with gold, removing the photoresist, coating the substrate with a negative working photoresist, developing the negative working photoresist to expose the base metal of the pattern, and chemically etching the unplated side of the pattern to produce the mask
Formation of star tracking reticles
The present application is directed towards a process for producing high resolution, substantially non-reflective reticles or choppers suitable for use for transmitting in both the visible and near ultra-violet regions, able to withstand reasonable handling and extreme environmental conditions, and capable of operating at speeds of from 2800 to about 9000 revolutions per minute without distortion. In particular, the present invention is directed towards the production or reticles having a quartz base vacuum coated with chromium, chromium-silver alloy, and silver with electrodeposited copper and black chromium thereon, respectively, in the form of a reticle pattern. The quartz permits the transmission of light while the pattern is opaque to light. The reticles of the present invention are intended for use in optical trackers, such as star trackers used in outer space
Thomassen's Choosability Argument Revisited
Thomassen (1994) proved that every planar graph is 5-choosable. This result
was generalised by {\v{S}}krekovski (1998) and He et al. (2008), who proved
that every -minor-free graph is 5-choosable. Both proofs rely on the
characterisation of -minor-free graphs due to Wagner (1937). This paper
proves the same result without using Wagner's structure theorem or even planar
embeddings. Given that there is no structure theorem for graphs with no
-minor, we argue that this proof suggests a possible approach for
attacking the Hadwiger Conjecture
SImulator of GAlaxy Millimetre/submillimetre Emission (SIGAME): CO emission from massive z=2 main-sequence galaxies
We present SIGAME (SImulator of GAlaxy Millimetre/submillimetre Emission), a
new numerical code designed to simulate the 12CO rotational line emission
spectrum of galaxies. Using sub-grid physics recipes to post-process the
outputs of smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations, a molecular gas
phase is condensed out of the hot and partly ionized SPH gas. The gas is
subjected to far-UV radiation fields and cosmic ray ionization rates which are
set to scale with the local star formation rate volume density. Level
populations and radiative transport of the CO lines are solved with the 3-D
radiative transfer code LIME. We have applied SIGAME to cosmological SPH
simulations of three disc galaxies at z=2 with stellar masses in the range
~(0.5-2)x10^11 Msun and star formation rates ~40-140 Msun/yr. Global CO
luminosities and line ratios are in agreement with observations of disc
galaxies at z~2 up to and including J=3-2 but falling short of the few existing
J=5-4 observations. The central 5 kpc regions of our galaxies have CO 3-2/1-0
and 7-6/1-0 brightness temperature ratios of ~0.55-0.65 and ~0.02-0.08,
respectively, while further out in the disc the ratios drop to more quiescent
values of ~0.5 and <0.01. Global CO-to-H2 conversion (alpha_CO) factors are
~=1.5 Msun*pc^2/(K km s/1), i.e. ~2-3 times below typically adopted values for
disc galaxies, and alpha_CO increases with radius, in agreement with
observations of nearby galaxies. Adopting a top-heavy Giant Molecular Cloud
(GMC) mass spectrum does not significantly change the results. Steepening the
GMC density profile leads to higher global line ratios for J_up>=3 and CO-to-H2

The coated quartz base is then coated by electroplating utilizing an acid copper deposit followed by a black chromium electrodeposit to produce the product of the present invention
Gains from the upgrade of the cold neutron triple-axis spectrometer FLEXX at the BER-II reactor
The upgrade of the cold neutron triple-axis spectrometer FLEXX is described.
We discuss the characterisation of the gains from the new primary spectrometer,
including a larger guide and double focussing monochromator, and present
measurements of the energy and momentum resolution and of the neutron flux of
the instrument. We found an order of magnitude gain in intensity (at the cost
of coarser momentum resolution), and that the incoherent elastic energy widths
are measurably narrower than before the upgrade. The much improved count rate
should allow the use of smaller single crystals samples and thus enable the
upgraded FLEXX spectrometer to continue making leading edge measurements.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, 5 table
Distant red galaxies in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field
We take advantage of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (UDF) data to study the
restframe optical and ultra violet (UV) morphologies of the novel population of
Distant Red Galaxies (DRGs). Six galaxies with J-Ks > 2.3 are found to Ks=21.5,
five of which have photometric redshifts z_phot > 2, corresponding to a surface
density of 0.9/arcmin^2. The surface brightness distributions of the z_phot > 2
galaxies are better represented by exponential disks than R^{1/4}-laws. Two of
the z_phot > 2 galaxies are extended, while three have compact morphologies.
The restframe optical morphology of the z_phot > 2 galaxies is quite different
from the restframe UV morphology: all the galaxies have red central components
which dominate in the NICMOS H_{160}-band images, and distinct off-center blue
features which show up in (and often dominate) the ACS images. The mean
measured effective radius of the z_phot > 2 galaxies is =1.9+/-1.4 kpc,
similar (within the errors) to the mean size of LBGs at similar redshifts. All
the DRGs are resolved in the ACS images, while four are resolved in the NICMOS
images. Two of the z_phot > 2 galaxies are bright X-ray sources and hence host
AGN. The diverse restframe optical and UV morphological properties of DRGs
derived here suggest that they have complex stellar populations, consisting of
both evolved populations that dominate the mass and the restframe optical
light, and younger populations, which show up as patches of star formation in
the restframe UV light; in many ways resembling the properties of normal local
galaxies. This interpretation is supported by fits to the broadband SEDs, which
for all five z_phot > 2 are best represented by models with extended star
formation histories and substantial amounts of dust.Comment: Accepted for publication in APJ
