An interatomic potential for saturated hydrocarbons based on the modified embedded-atom method
In this work, we developed an interatomic potential for saturated
hydrocarbons using the modified embedded-atom method (MEAM), a reactive
semi-empirical many-body potential based on density functional theory and pair
potentials. We parameterized the potential by fitting to a large experimental
and first-principles (FP) database consisting of 1) bond distances, bond
angles, and atomization energies at 0 K of a homologous series of alkanes and
their select isomers from methane to n-octane, 2) the potential energy curves
of H, CH, and C diatomics, 3) the potential energy curves of hydrogen,
methane, ethane, and propane dimers, i.e., (H), (CH),
(CH), and (CH), respectively, and 5)
pressure-volume-temperature (PVT) data of a dense high-pressure methane system
with the density of 0.5534 g/cc. We compared the atomization energies and
geometries of a range of linear alkanes, cycloalkanes, and free radicals
calculated from the MEAM potential to those calculated by other commonly used
reactive potentials for hydrocarbons, i.e., second-generation reactive
empirical bond order (REBO) and reactive force field (ReaxFF). MEAM reproduced
the experimental and/or FP data with accuracy comparable to or better than REBO
or ReaxFF. The experimental PVT data for a relatively large series of methane,
ethane, propane, and butane systems with different densities were predicted
reasonably well by MEAM. Although the MEAM formalism has been applied to atomic
systems with predominantly metallic bonding in the past, the current work
demonstrates the promising extension of the MEAM potential to covalently bonded
molecular systems, specifically saturated hydrocarbons and saturated
hydrocarbon-based polymers
GridCertLib: a Single Sign-on Solution for Grid Web Applications and Portals
This paper describes the design and implementation of GridCertLib, a Java
library leveraging a Shibboleth-based authentication infrastructure and the
SLCS online certificate signing service, to provide short-lived X.509
certificates and Grid proxies. The main use case envisioned for GridCertLib, is
to provide seamless and secure access to Grid/X.509 certificates and proxies in
web applications and portals: when a user logs in to the portal using
Shibboleth authentication, GridCertLib can automatically obtain a Grid/X.509
certificate from the SLCS service and generate a VOMS proxy from it. We give an
overview of the architecture of GridCertLib and briefly describe its
programming model. Its application to some deployment scenarios is outlined, as
well as a report on practical experience integrating GridCertLib into portals
for Bioinformatics and Computational Chemistry applications, based on the

Quantifying the Energetics and Length Scales of Carbon Segregation to Fe Symmetric Tilt Grain Boundaries Using Atomistic Simulations
Segregation of impurities to grain boundaries plays an important role in both
the stability and macroscopic behavior of polycrystalline materials. The
research objective in this work is to better characterize the energetics and
length scales involved with the process of solute and impurity segregation to
grain boundaries. Molecular dynamics simulations are used to calculate the
segregation energies for carbon within multiple grain boundary sites over a
database of 125 symmetric tilt grain boundaries in Fe. The simulation results
show that the majority of atomic sites near the grain boundary have segregation
energies lower than in the bulk. Moreover, depending on the boundary, the
segregation energies approach the bulk value approximately 5-12 \AA\ away from
the center of the grain boundary, providing an energetic length scale for
carbon segregation. A subsequent data reduction and statistical representation
of this dataset provides critical information such as about the mean
segregation energy and the associated energy distributions for carbon atoms as
a function of distance from the grain boundary, which quantitatively informs
higher scale models with energetics and length scales necessary for capturing
the segregation behavior of impurities in Fe. The significance of this research
is the development of a methodology capable of ascertaining segregation
energies over a wide range of grain boundary character (typical of that
observed in polycrystalline materials), which herein has been applied to carbon
segregation in a specific class of grain boundaries in iron
Surfactant protein-D and exposure to bioaerosols in wastewater and garbage workers
Purpose: Bioaerosols and their constituents, such as endotoxins, are capable of causing an inflammatory reaction at the level of the lung-blood barrier, which becomes more permeable. Thus, it was hypothesized that occupational exposure to bioaerosols can increase leakage of surfactant protein-D (SP-D), a lung-specific protein, into the bloodstream. Methods: SP-D was determined by ELISA in 316 wastewater workers, 67 garbage collectors, and 395 control subjects. Exposure was assessed with four interview-based indicators and by preliminary endotoxin measurements using the Limulus amoebocyte lysate assay. Influence of exposure on serum SP-D was assessed by multiple linear regression considering smoking, glomerular function, lung diseases, obesity, and other confounders. Results: Overall, mean exposure levels to endotoxins were below 100EU/m3. However, special tasks of wastewater workers caused higher endotoxin exposure. SP-D concentration was slightly increased in this occupational group and associated with the occurrence of splashes and contact to raw sewage. No effect was found in garbage collectors. Smoking increased serum SP-D. No clinically relevant correlation between spirometry results and SP-D concentrations appeared. Conclusions: These results support the hypothesis that inhalation of bioaerosols, even at low concentrations, has a subclinical effect on the lung-blood barrier, the permeability of which increases without associated spirometric change
A review of bovine tuberculosis at the wildlife-livestock-human interface in sub-Saharan Africa
Infection of wild animals by bovine tuberculosis (bTB) is raising concern worldwide. This article reviews the current epidemiological situation, risk of emergence and control options at the wildlife-livestock-human interface in sub-Saharan Africa. In livestock, bTB has been confirmed in the majority of countries from all parts of the continent. Wildlife infection is confirmed in seven countries from southern and eastern Africa, apparently spreading in the southern Africa region. Mycobacterium bovis has been isolated from 17 wild mammal species, although only four are suspected to play a role as maintenance host. Zoonotic risks are a concern, but no direct spillover from wildlife to humans has been documented, and no case of bTB spillback from wildlife to livestock has been confirmed. Effects of passive smoking on heart rate variability, heart rate and blood pressure: an observational study
Background Exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) has been shown to increase the risk for cardiovascular diseases and death, and autonomic dysfunction (specifically, reduced heart rate variability (HRV)) is a predictor of increased cardiac risk. This study tests the hypothesis that ETS exposure reduces HRV in the general population and discusses possible pathways. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted between 2001 and 2003 and is part of the SAPALDIA (Swiss Cohort Study on Air Pollution and Lung Diseases in Adults) study. The analysis included 1218 randomly selected non-smokers aged 50 and above who participated in 24-h electrocardiogram recordings. Other examinations included an interview, investigating health status (especially respiratory and cardiovascular health and health relevant behaviours and exposure to ETS) and measurements of blood pressure, body height and weight. Results Subjects exposed to ETS at home or at work for more than 2 h/day had a difference of −15% in total power (95%CI: −26 to −3%), low frequency power (−28 to −1%), low/high frequency ratio (−26 to −3%) and −18% (−29 to −4%) in ultralow frequency power of HRV compared with subjects not exposed to ETS at home or work. We also found a 2.7% (−0.01 to 5.34%) higher heart rate during the recording in exposed subjects. Conclusions Exposure to ETS at home and work is associated with lower HRV and with higher heart rate in an ageing population. Convergent origination of a Drosophila-like dosage compensation mechanism in a reptile lineage
Sex chromosomes differentiated from different ancestral autosomes in various vertebrate lineages. Here, we trace the functional evolution of the XY Chromosomes of the green anole lizard (Anolis carolinensis), on the basis of extensive high-throughput genome, transcriptome and histone modification sequencing data and revisit dosage compensation evolution in representative mammals and birds with substantial new expression data. Our analyses show that Anolis sex chromosomes represent an ancient XY system that originated at least ≈160 million years ago in the ancestor of Iguania lizards, shortly after the separation from the snake lineage. The age of this system approximately coincides with the ages of the avian and two mammalian sex chromosomes systems. To compensate for the almost complete Y Chromosome degeneration, X-linked genes have become twofold up-regulated, restoring ancestral expression levels. The highly efficient dosage compensation mechanism of Anolis represents the only vertebrate case identified so far to fully support Ohno’s original dosage compensation hypothesis. Further analyses reveal that X up-regulation occurs only in males and is mediated by a male-specific chromatin machinery that leads to global hyperacetylation of histone H4 at lysine 16 specifically on the X Chromosome. The green anole dosage compensation mechanism is highly reminiscent of that of the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster. Altogether, our work unveils the convergent emergence of a Drosophila-like dosage compensation mechanism in an ancient reptilian sex chromosome system and highlights that the evolutionary pressures imposed by sex chromosome dosage reductions in different amniotes were resolved in fundamentally different ways
Corporate Social Responsibility/Sustainability Reporting Among the Fortune Global 250: Greenwashing or Green Supply Chain?
The sustainability reporting efforts of MNCs who are members of the Fortune Global 250 (FG250) was investigated. The focus was on sustainability reporting by MNCs of supply chain impacts. The reporting of FG250 MNCs was examined to determine if greenwashing was occurring or whether MNCs had committed to operating a green supply chain. A mixed methodology was used consisting of quantitative analysis of twenty-five MNC CSR/sustainability reports which were randomly selected from the FG250 listing. Qualitative analysis using content analysis was also conducted on the reports. Both methodologies concentrated on the sustainability reporting of the selected MNCs in regard to their supply chain. Findings were mixed as there were great variations among the MNCs in their level of sustainability reporting about their supply chains. Some MNCs did not report on the activities of their supply chain at all (20%), the majority of the MNCs reported on their supply chain impacts at the value and goal level (48%), while the rest reported at the management approach level (32%). A majority of the sampled MNCs could be accused of greenwashing due to the lack of detailed quantitative information provided by the MNCs on the environmental impacts of their supply chai
