Thermal and cryogenic design study for space infrared telescope facility (SIRTF)

A study was conducted to determine the ability of an all superfluid helium design to meet the performance requirements of background limited to 200 micrometer, and a two year lifetime for a one meter class free flying infrared observatory. Both a 98 deg and 28.5 deg inclination orbits were examined, and aperture shade designs were developed for both orbits. A unique forebaffle cooling design significantly reduces the sensitivity to aperture heat loads. With certain restrictions on observing modes, the study determined that an all superfluid helium Dewar will meet the temperature and lifetime requirements. A dual cryogen SFHe/SH2 system was also investigated for the 28.5 deg orbit and found to provide a more constant forebaffle temperature but with only a slight improvement in lifetime

    A (P)HMC algorithm for N_f = 2 + 1 + 1 flavours of twisted mass fermions

We present a detailed design of a (P)HMC simulation algorithm for N_f = 2 + 1 + 1 maximally twisted Wilson quark flavours. The algorithm retains even/odd and mass-shift preconditionings combined with multiple Molecular Dynamics time scales for both the light mass degenerate, u and d, quarks and the heavy mass non-degenerate, s and c, quarks. Various non-standard aspects of the algorithm are discussed, among which those connected to the use of a polynomial approximation for the inverse (square root of the squared) Dirac matrix in the s and c quark sector.Comment: Contribution to the proceedings of Lattice 2005 (Algorithms and Machines), 6 pages, 1 figur

Lymphoma and hypercalcemia in a pediatric orthotopic liver transplant patient

We present a case report of a pediatric orthotopic liver transplant recipient who developed lymphoma with hypercalcemia on cyclosporine and prednisone immunosuppression. This is the first reported posttransplant lymphoproliferative disorder complicated by hypercalcemia, with a finding of an elevated 1,25 dihydroxyl vitamin D state, suggesting that it has a role in the pathophysiology of this B cell lymphoma hypercalcemia. The clinical course and management of this disorder with a 31-month follow-up are described. © 1989 by Williams & Wilkins

    Pion scattering in Wilson ChPT

We compute the scattering amplitude for pion scattering in Wilson chiral perturbation theory for two degenerate quark flavors. We consider two different regimes where the quark mass m is of order (i) a\Lambda_QCD^2 and (ii) a^2\Lambda_QCD^3. Analytic expressions for the scattering lengths in all three isospin channels are given. As a result of the O(a^2) terms the I=0 and I=2 scattering lengths do not vanish in the chiral limit. Moreover, additional chiral logarithms proportional to a^2\ln M_{\pi}^2 are present in the one-loop results for regime (ii). These contributions significantly modify the familiar results from continuum chiral perturbation theory.Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures. O(a^2) cutoff effects in lattice Wilson fermion simulations

In this paper we propose to interpret the large discretization artifacts affecting the neutral pion mass in maximally twisted lattice QCD simulations as O(a^2) effects whose magnitude is roughly proportional to the modulus square of the (continuum) matrix element of the pseudoscalar density operator between vacuum and one-pion state. The numerical size of this quantity is determined by the dynamical mechanism of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking and turns out to be substantially larger than its natural magnitude set by the value of Lambda_QCD.Comment: 38 pages, 1 figure, 2 table

The dynamics of thin vibrated granular layers

We describe a series of experiments and computer simulations on vibrated granular media in a geometry chosen to eliminate gravitationally induced settling. The system consists of a collection of identical spherical particles on a horizontal plate vibrating vertically, with or without a confining lid. Previously reported results are reviewed, including the observation of homogeneous, disordered liquid-like states, an instability to a `collapse' of motionless spheres on a perfect hexagonal lattice, and a fluctuating, hexagonally ordered state. In the presence of a confining lid we see a variety of solid phases at high densities and relatively high vibration amplitudes, several of which are reported for the first time in this article. The phase behavior of the system is closely related to that observed in confined hard-sphere colloidal suspensions in equilibrium, but with modifications due to the effects of the forcing and dissipation. We also review measurements of velocity distributions, which range from Maxwellian to strongly non-Maxwellian depending on the experimental parameter values. We describe measurements of spatial velocity correlations that show a clear dependence on the mechanism of energy injection. We also report new measurements of the velocity autocorrelation function in the granular layer and show that increased inelasticity leads to enhanced particle self-diffusion.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figure

    Ghost-gluon coupling, power corrections and ΛMS\Lambda_{\overline {\rm MS}} from twisted-mass lattice QCD at Nf=2

We present results concerning the non-perturbative evaluation of the ghost-gluon running QCD coupling constant from Nf=2N_f=2 twisted-mass lattice calculations. A novel method for calibrating the lattice spacing, independent of the string tension and hadron spectrum is presented with results in agreement with previous estimates. The value of ΛMS\Lambda_{\overline{MS}} is computed from the running of the QCD coupling only after extrapolating to zero dynamical quark mass and after removing a non-perturbative OPE contribution that is assumed to be dominated by the dimension-two \VEV{A^2} gluon condensate. The effect due to the dynamical quark mass in the determination of \Lams is discussed.Comment: 33 pages, 6 fig
