Combining ability analysis and gene action of grain quality traits in rice (Oryza sativa L.) using line × tester analysis
In rice, twelve lines were crossed with five testers in a line × tester mating design and the resultant 60 hybrids along with their parents were evaluated for their combining ability effects for 15 grain quality traits. The results revealed that the ratio of GCA: SCA variances computed for all the fifteen grain quality traits showed the predominance of non-additive gene action. Among the lines, ADT (R) 47 showed significant desirable gca effects at 1% probability level (p = 0.01) for 11 grain quality traits viz., hulling percentage, milling percentage, head rice recovery percentage, kernel breadth, kernel breadth after cooking, breadth wise expansion ratio, gelatinization temperature, amylose content, gel consistency, water uptake and volume expansion ratio. Among the testers, Pusa 1460 showed significant desirable gca effects at 1% probability level (p = 0.01) for 10 grain quality traits viz., kernel length, kernel breadth, kernel length/breadth ratio, kernel length after cooking, kernel breadth after cooking, linear elongation ratio, gelatinization temperature, amylose content, water uptake and volume expansion ratio and hence they were adjudged as the best combiners for the improvement of the respective traits. Among the hybrids, the hybrids CO 47/Imp., Samba Mahsuri, ADT (R) 47/IRBB 21 and ADT (R) 46/IRBB 21 were identified as best hybrids for exploitation of grain quality traits since they revealed significant sca effects at 1% probability level (p = 0.01) for eight, eight and five grain quality traits, respectively

Optimisation of substrate angles for multi-material and multi-functional inkjet printing
Three dimensional inkjet printing of multiple materials for electronics applications are challenging due to the limited material availability, inconsistencies in layer thickness between dissimilar materials and the need to expose the printed tracks of metal nanoparticles to temperature above 100 °C for sintering. It is envisaged that instead of printing a dielectric and a conductive material on the same plane, by printing conductive tracks on an angled dielectric surface, the required number of silver layers and consequently, the exposure of the polymer to high temperature and the build time of the component can be significantly reduced. Conductive tracks printed with a fixed print height (FH) showed significantly better resolution for all angles than the fixed slope (FS) sample where the print height varied to maintain the slope length. The electrical resistance of the tracks remained under 10Ω up to 60° for FH; whereas for the FS samples, the resistance remained under 10Ω for samples up to 45°. Thus by fixing the print height to 4 mm, precise tracks with low resistance can be printed at substrate angles up to 60°. By adopting this approach, the build height “Z” can be quickly attained with less exposure of the polymer to high temperature

Electron Beam Irradiation Effects on Dielectric Parameters of SiR–EPDM Blends
The survival of an electrical system is mostly governed by the endurance limit of the dielectric material employed in it. The five different compositions of SiR–EPDM blends were prepared. Electron beam radiation has been widely used in the cable manufacturing industries in order to increase the life of the cable. Hence, the five blends were irradiated to 5, 15 and 25 Mrad dose levels by electron beam accelerator. The dielectric parameters such as breakdown voltage (BDV), dielectric strength (DS), dielectric constant (DC), and dissipation factor (DF) were measured as per ASTM/IEC standards. This chapter evaluates the effect of electron beam irradiation on dielectric parameters of SiR–EPDM blends

Investigating the melt pool properties and thermal effects of multi-laser diode area melting
Diode area melting (DAM) is a new additive manufacturing process that utilises customised architectural arrays of low-power
laser diode emitters for high-speed parallel processing of metallic feedstock. The laser diodes operate at shorter laser wavelengths
(808 nm) than conventional SLM fibre lasers (1064 nm) theoretically enabling more efficient energy absorption for specific
materials. This investigation presents the first work investigating the melt pool properties and thermal effects of the multi-laser
DAM process, modelling generated melt pools the unique thermal profiles created along a powder bed during processing. Using
this approach process, optimisation can be improved by analysing this thermal temperature distribution, targeting processing
conditions that induce full melting for variable powder layer thicknesses. In this work, the developed thermal model simulates the
DAM processing of 316L stainless steel and is validated with experimental trials. The simulation indicates that multi-laser DAM
methodology can reduce residual stress formation compared to the single point laser scanning methods used during selective laser
melting

3D-Inkjet Printing of Flexible and Stretchable Electronics
Inkjet printing of conductive tracks on flexible and stretchable materials have gained
considerable interest in recent years. Conductive inks including inks with silver nanoparticles, carbon based inks, inks containing poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT)
doped with polystyrene sulfonic acid (PSS) are being researched widely to obtain a printed
electronic patterns. In this study, we present drop-on-demand inkjet printing of conductive
silver and PEDOT:PSS on a flexible and stretchable substrate. Process conditions for the
inkjet printing of silver nano-particles and PEDOT:PSS were optimised and simple
geometrical patterns (straight line and sinewave tracks) were printed. Surface profile, surface
morphology and electrical resistance of the printed patterns were examined. The printed
silver patterns were observed to be highly conductive; however when stretched, the patterns
did not conduct due to the origination of cracks. The measured conductivity for the
PEDOT:PSS patterns was significantly lower than the silver patterns; however, they
remained conductive when stretched for up to 3 mm. When flexed, PEDOT:PSS remained
conductive for a lower radius of curvature (10 mm) than the silver. Among the printed
patterns, the sinewave pattern was observed to be superior for flexible electronics application.Mechanical Engineerin
Who Are the Workers Who Never Joined a Union? : Empirical Evidence from Western and Eastern Germany
"Using representative data from the German social survey ALLBUS 2002 and the
European Social Survey 2002/03, this paper provides the first empirical analysis of trade union
‘never-membership’ in Germany. We show that between 54 and 59 percent of all employees in
Germany have never been members of a trade union. In western Germany, individuals’ probability
of ‘never-membership’ is significantly affected by their personal characteristics, their
political orientation and (to a lesser degree) their family background. In addition, the presence
of a union at the workplace plays a significant role. While the latter factor is also important in
eastern Germany, many of the variables which are relevant for ‘never-membership’ in the west
prove to be irrelevant in the east. This difference probably reflects the fact that most employees
in eastern Germany did not really have a choice not to become union members during the
communist regime."
(Autorenreferat
