Euler angles for G2
We provide a simple parametrization for the group G2, which is analogous to
the Euler parametrization for SU(2). We show how to obtain the general element
of the group in a form emphasizing the structure of the fibration of G2 with
fiber SO(4) and base H, the variety of quaternionic subalgebras of octonions.
In particular this allows us to obtain a simple expression for the Haar measure
on G2. Moreover, as a by-product it yields a concrete realization and an
Einstein metric for H.Comment: 21 pages, 2 figures, some misprints correcte
VLTI/PIONIER images the Achernar disk swell
Context. The mechanism of disk formation around fast-rotating Be stars is not
well understood. In particular, it is not clear which mechanisms operate, in
addition to fast rotation, to produce the observed variable ejection of matter.
The star Achernar is a privileged laboratory to probe these additional
mechanisms because it is close, presents B-Be phase variations on timescales
ranging from 6 yr to 15 yr, a companion star was discovered around it, and
probably presents a polar wind or jet. Aims. Despite all these previous
studies, the disk around Achernar was never directly imaged. Therefore we seek
to produce an image of the photosphere and close environment of the star.
Methods. We used infrared long-baseline interferometry with the PIONIER/VLTI
instrument to produce reconstructed images of the photosphere and close
environment of the star over four years of observations. To study the disk
formation, we compared the observations and reconstructed images to previously
computed models of both the stellar photosphere alone (normal B phase) and the
star presenting a circumstellar disk (Be phase). Results. The observations
taken in 2011 and 2012, during the quiescent phase of Achernar, do not exhibit
a disk at the detection limit of the instrument. In 2014, on the other hand, a
disk was already formed and our reconstructed image reveals an extended H-band
continuum excess flux. Our results from interferometric imaging are also
supported by several H-alpha line profiles showing that Achernar started an
emission-line phase sometime in the beginning of 2013. The analysis of our
reconstructed images shows that the 2014 near-IR flux extends to 1.7 - 2.3
equatorial radii. Our model-independent size estimation of the H-band continuum
contribution is compatible with the presence of a circumstellar disk, which is
in good agreement with predictions from Be-disk models
Approximating Clustering of Fingerprint Vectors with Missing Values
The problem of clustering fingerprint vectors is an interesting problem in
Computational Biology that has been proposed in (Figureroa et al. 2004). In
this paper we show some improvements in closing the gaps between the known
lower bounds and upper bounds on the approximability of some variants of the
biological problem. Namely we are able to prove that the problem is APX-hard
even when each fingerprint contains only two unknown position. Moreover we have
studied some variants of the orginal problem, and we give two 2-approximation
algorithm for the IECMV and OECMV problems when the number of unknown entries
for each vector is at most a constant.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figure
Parameterized Complexity of the k-anonymity Problem
The problem of publishing personal data without giving up privacy is becoming
increasingly important. An interesting formalization that has been recently
proposed is the -anonymity. This approach requires that the rows of a table
are partitioned in clusters of size at least and that all the rows in a
cluster become the same tuple, after the suppression of some entries. The
natural optimization problem, where the goal is to minimize the number of
suppressed entries, is known to be APX-hard even when the records values are
over a binary alphabet and , and when the records have length at most 8
and . In this paper we study how the complexity of the problem is
influenced by different parameters. In this paper we follow this direction of
research, first showing that the problem is W[1]-hard when parameterized by the
size of the solution (and the value ). Then we exhibit a fixed parameter
algorithm, when the problem is parameterized by the size of the alphabet and
the number of columns. Finally, we investigate the computational (and
approximation) complexity of the -anonymity problem, when restricting the
instance to records having length bounded by 3 and . We show that such a
restriction is APX-hard.Comment: 22 pages, 2 figure
High-spin states and band terminations in v 49
High-spin states in 49 V have been studied through the 28 Si(28 Si, α3p) reaction using the EUROBALL γ-ray detector array. The 49 V level scheme has been extended up to 13.1 MeV including 21 new states. Both negative and positive parity states have been interpreted in the framework of theShell Model. Transition probabilities in the X(5) candidate Ba
To investigate the possible X(5) character of 122Ba, suggested by the ground
state band energy pattern, the lifetimes of the lowest yrast states of 122Ba
have been measured, via the Recoil Distance Doppler-Shift method. The relevant
levels have been populated by using the 108Cd(16O,2n)122Ba and the
112Sn(13C,3n)122Ba reactions. The B(E2) values deduced in the present work are
compared to the predictions of the X(5) model and to calculations performed in
the framework of the IBA-1 and IBA-2 models
Off-Axis Nulling Transfer Function Measurement: A First Assessment
We want to study a polychromatic inverse problem method with nulling interferometers to obtain information on the structures of the exozodiacal light. For this reason, during the first semester of 2013, thanks to the support of the consortium PERSEE, we launched a campaign of laboratory measurements with the nulling interferometric test bench PERSEE, operating with 9 spectral channels between J and K bands. Our objective is to characterise the transfer function, i.e. the map of the null as a function of wavelength for an off-axis source, the null being optimised on the central source or on the source photocenter. We were able to reach on-axis null depths better than 10(exp 4). This work is part of a broader project aiming at creating a simulator of a nulling interferometer in which typical noises of a real instrument are introduced. We present here our first results
U and Th content in the Central Apennines continental crust: a contribution to the determination of the geo-neutrinos flux at LNGS
The regional contribution to the geo-neutrino signal at Gran Sasso National
Laboratory (LNGS) was determined based on a detailed geological, geochemical
and geophysical study of the region. U and Th abundances of more than 50
samples representative of the main lithotypes belonging to the Mesozoic and
Cenozoic sedimentary cover were analyzed. Sedimentary rocks were grouped into
four main "Reservoirs" based on similar paleogeographic conditions and
mineralogy. Basement rocks do not outcrop in the area. Thus U and Th in the
Upper and Lower Crust of Valsugana and Ivrea-Verbano areas were analyzed. Based
on geological and geophysical properties, relative abundances of the various
reservoirs were calculated and used to obtain the weighted U and Th abundances
for each of the three geological layers (Sedimentary Cover, Upper and Lower
Crust). Using the available seismic profile as well as the stratigraphic
records from a number of exploration wells, a 3D modelling was developed over
an area of 2^{\circ}x2^{\circ} down to the Moho depth, for a total volume of
about 1.2x10^6 km^3. This model allowed us to determine the volume of the
various geological layers and eventually integrate the Th and U contents of the
whole crust beneath LNGS. On this base the local contribution to the
geo-neutrino flux (S) was calculated and added to the contribution given by the
rest of the world, yielding a Refined Reference Model prediction for the
geo-neutrino signal in the Borexino detector at LNGS: S(U) = (28.7 \pm 3.9) TNU
and S(Th) = (7.5 \pm 1.0) TNU. An excess over the total flux of about 4 TNU was
previously obtained by Mantovani et al. (2004) who calculated, based on general
worldwide assumptions, a signal of 40.5 TNU. The considerable thickness of the
sedimentary rocks, almost predominantly represented by U- and Th- poor
carbonatic rocks in the area near LNGS, is responsible for this difference.Comment: 45 pages, 5 figures, 12 tables; accepted for publication in GC
Multinucleon transfer reactions in closed-shell nuclei
Multinucleon transfer reactions in 40Ca+96Zr and 90Zr+208Pb have been measured at energies close to the Coulomb barrier in a high resolution gamma-particle coincidence experiment. The large solid angle magnetic spectrometer PRISMA coupled to the CLARA gamma-array has been employed. Trajectory reconstruction has been applied for the complete identification of transfer products. Mass and charge yields, total kinetic energy losses, gamma transitions of the binary reaction partners, and comparison of data with semiclassical calculations are reported. Specific transitions in 95Zr populated in one particle transfer channels are discussed in terms of particle-phonon couplings. The gamma decays from states in 42Ca in the excitation energy region expected from pairing vibrations are also observed
