A mixed reality telepresence system for collaborative space operation
This paper presents a Mixed Reality system that results from the integration of a telepresence system and an application to improve collaborative space exploration. The system combines free viewpoint video with immersive projection technology to support non-verbal communication, including eye gaze, inter-personal distance and facial expression. Importantly, these can be interpreted together as people move around the simulation, maintaining natural social distance. The application is a simulation of Mars, within which the collaborators must come to agreement over, for example, where the Rover should land and go.
The first contribution is the creation of a Mixed Reality system supporting contextualization of non-verbal communication. Tw technological contributions are prototyping a technique to subtract a person from a background that may contain physical objects and/or moving images, and a light weight texturing method for multi-view rendering which provides balance in terms of visual and temporal quality. A practical contribution is the demonstration of pragmatic approaches to sharing space between display systems of distinct levels of immersion. A research tool contribution is a system that allows comparison of conventional authored and video based reconstructed avatars, within an environment that encourages exploration and social interaction. Radial Distribution of Near-UV Flux in Disc Galaxies in the range 0<z<1
(Abridged) The goal of this paper is to quantify the changes on the SF
distribution within the disc galaxies in the last ~8 Gyr. We use as a proxy for
the SF radial profile the Near-UV surface brightness distributions, allowing
suitably for extinction. We compare the effective radii (R_eff) and
concentration of the flux distribution in the rest-frame Near-UV for a sample
of 270 galaxies in the range 0<z<1. This radial distribution is compared to
that measured in the rest-frame B-band, which traces older stellar populations.
The analysis is performed using deep, high resolution, multi-band images from
GALEX, SDSS, and HST/ACS - GOODS-South. The relation R_eff(NUV)- M* suffers a
moderate change between z~1 and z~0: at a fixed stellar mass of 1E10 M_sun,
galaxies increase their effective radii by a factor 1.18+/-0.06. Median
profiles in NUV show signs of truncation at R~R_eff, and median colour profiles
(NUV-B) show a minimum (a "bluest" point) also around R~1-1.5 R_eff. The
distributions of NUV flux are more compact at z~1 than nowadays, in terms of
the fraction of flux enclosed in a specific radius (in kpc). Our results
indicate that the SF surface density has decreased dramatically in discs since
z~1, and this decline has been more intense in the central parts (<~R_eff) of
the galaxies. In addition, our data suggest that the bulges/pseudo-bulges have

A catalog of visual double and multiple stars with eclipsing components
A new catalog of visual double systems containing eclipsing binaries as one
component is presented. The main purpose of this catalog is to compile a
complete list of all known multiples of this variety, both for current analysis
and to highlight those in need of additional observations. All available
photometric and astrometric data were analyzed, resulting in new orbits for
eight systems and new times of minimum light for a number of the eclipsing
binaries. Some of the systems in the catalog have acceptable solutions for
their visual orbits, although in most cases their orbital periods are too long
for simultaneous analysis. Also included, however, are a number of systems
which currently lack an orbital solution but which may be suitable for

Observation of the Isospin-Violating Decay
Using data collected with the CLEO~II detector, we have observed the
isospin-violating decay . The decay rate for this mode,

Search for the Decays B^0 -> D^{(*)+} D^{(*)-}
Using the CLEO-II data set we have searched for the Cabibbo-suppressed decays
B^0 -> D^{(*)+} D^{(*)-}. For the decay B^0 -> D^{*+} D^{*-}, we observe one
candidate signal event, with an expected background of 0.022 +/- 0.011 events.
This yield corresponds to a branching fraction of Br(B^0 -> D^{*+} D^{*-}) =
(5.3^{+7.1}_{-3.7}(stat) +/- 1.0(syst)) x 10^{-4} and an upper limit of Br(B^0
-> D^{*+} D^{*-}) D^{*\pm} D^\mp and
B^0 -> D^+ D^-, no significant excess of signal above the expected background
level is seen, and we calculate the 90% CL upper limits on the branching
fractions to be Br(B^0 -> D^{*\pm} D^\mp) D^+

Improved Measurement of the Pseudoscalar Decay Constant
We present a new determination of the Ds decay constant, f_{Ds} using 5
million continuum charm events obtained with the CLEO II detector. Our value is
derived from our new measured ratio of widths for Ds -> mu nu/Ds -> phi pi of
0.173+/- 0.021 +/- 0.031. Taking the branching ratio for Ds -> phi pi as (3.6
+/- 0.9)% from the PDG, we extract f_{Ds} = (280 +/- 17 +/- 25 +/- 34){MeV}. We
