    Relationships Between Higher Education Leaders and Subordinates in Pakistan: A Path-Goal Approach

    This article is based on a quantitative research to examine the leadership behaviour of degree college principals, selected personal and organizational characteristics, acceptance of leadership, faculty job satisfaction and job expectancies. Leadership style was defined in four dimensions – directive, supportive, participative, and achievement-oriented. The measuring instrument comprised 120 items and was administered to the randomly selected sample of 854 lecturers and 138 principals. Twenty-six hypotheses were tested in educational setting. MANCOVA and ANCOVA were used to discover the moderating affect of situational variables on the relationship of leadership style and subordinates’ outcomes, controlling the effect of role ambiguity and stress of the principals. The moderators tested in three-way interactions included need for autonomy, need for achievement, perception about ability, locus of control, task structure and stress. Findings indicated that the support for House’s path-goal theory was limited. Only 16 of the 26 three-way interactions accorded with the predictions of theory

    Income Mobility in Old Age in Britain and Germany

    The increases in human longevity in recent decades and the trends for early retirement have posed new challenges for policy makers, and require a holistic understanding of the processes that influence the economic resources of older people. This paper contributes to this knowledge by examining the income mobility experienced by older people living in Britain and Germany during the 1990s, and by identifying personal attributes and life-course events that influenced its direction and likelihood. The analysis uses the British Household Panel Survey (BHPS) and the German Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP) panel data. The comparative perspective yields insights about the different income experience of older people in the two markedly different welfare regimes. Results show that old-age income mobility is more pronounced in Britain than in Germany, and that in both countries its occurrence is particularly associated with changes in living arrangements, in the employment status of the co-resident family members and with widowhood among women. Unemployment during working life is also associated with significant negative later life income mobility. Among those on low incomes, a high share of income from an earnings-related pension had a significant and positive effect in both countries. One policy implication is the need to strengthen the social safety net, to safeguard against downward income mobility in old age, particularly among widows. Policy incentives are required to encourage flexible living arrangements in old age, as well as a greater protection from unemployment during working life, more so in Germany than in Britain.income mobility, old age, pensions, Britain and Germany

    The stepper motor movement process produced different frequency and pulses. This research explained about the frequency and pulses for the stepper motor movement by using Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) as research method. The study was done to find the suitable frequency and pulses for stepper motor movement by developing a prototype stepper motor controller system. The pulse frequency used did not affected the distance of moving load in the stepper motor operations. The increasing number of pulse frequency only will affect the time taken for the stepper motor to complete its operations. The result showed that number of pulse frequency at high operation was 5000 Hz. Pulse number reacted as a manipulated variable that affected both factor which is time taken of stepper motor operation and the distance of moving load

    Tilt Angle Optimization in Two-Tier Cellular Networks - A Stochastic Geometry Approach

    In this work, we address the antenna tilt optimization problem for a two tier cellular network consisting of macrocells and femtocells, where both tiers share the same spectrum and their positions are modelled via two independent Poisson Point Processes (PPPs). First, we derive the coverage probability for a traditional cellular network consisting only of macrocells and obtain the optimum tilt angle that maximises the overall energy efficiency (EE). Gains of up to 400% in EE were found for a scenario (approximately) equivalent to a hexagonal cell deployment with cell radius of 200 m when the optimum tilt was selected. We then proceed to model the Heterogeneous Network (HetNet) scenario where femtocells are also deployed in the network’s area. We observe that the macro users performance is highly sensitive to the interference emanating from the femtocell tier. In order to circumvent this issue, interference coordination by employing a guard zone for the macrocell user is proposed. Subsequently, we formulate a joint optimization problem where we derive both, the radius of a guard zone protecting the macro user and the tilt angle that maximize the EE of the network

    AGC 226067: A possible interacting low-mass system

    We present Arecibo, GBT, VLA and WIYN/pODI observations of the ALFALFA source AGC 226067. Originally identified as an ultra-compact high velocity cloud and candidate Local Group galaxy, AGC 226067 is spatially and kinematically coincident with the Virgo cluster, and the identification by multiple groups of an optical counterpart with no resolved stars supports the interpretation that this systems lies at the Virgo distance (D=17 Mpc). The combined observations reveal that the system consists of multiple components: a central HI source associated with the optical counterpart (AGC 226067), a smaller HI-only component (AGC 229490), a second optical component (AGC 229491), and extended low surface brightness HI. Only ~1/4 of the single-dish HI emission is associated with AGC 226067; as a result, we find M_HI/L_g ~ 6 Msun/Lsun, which is lower than previous work. At D=17 Mpc, AGC 226067 has an HI mass of 1.5 x 10^7 Msun and L_g = 2.4 x 10^6 Lsun, AGC 229490 (the HI-only component) has M_HI = 3.6 x 10^6 Msun, and AGC 229491 (the second optical component) has L_g = 3.6 x 10^5 Lsun. The nature of this system of three sources is uncertain: AGC 226067 and AGC 229490 may be connected by an HI bridge, and AGC 229490 and AGC 229491 are separated by only 0.5'. The current data do not resolve the HI in AGC 229490 and its origin is unclear. We discuss possible scenarios for this system of objects: an interacting system of dwarf galaxies, accretion of material onto AGC 226067, or stripping of material from AGC 226067.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 6 pages, 4 figure

    Modelling and performance evaluation of non-uniform two-tier cellular networks through Stienen model

    In this paper we introduce Stienen's model for analysing the performance of a non-uniform two-tier networks. The topology of the network consists of a set of macro base stations (MBSs) uniformly deployed, and a set of femtocell access points (FAPs) deployed only outside exclusion areas (discs) surrounding the MBSs. The MBSs serve users within the innermost areas of each macrocell, while the femtocells are restricted to serve users located in the outermost areas towards the edge of the macrocells. Results show that the edge user performance in terms of coverage is highly increased by the addition of femtocells. Moreover, the coverage in the macrocell tier can be also increased in comparison with a macrocell-only network if the number of femtocells deployed is judiciously selected. Furthermore, a well balanced network can be achieved, where the same performance is expected throughout the entire area

    "Better Safe than Sorry" - Individual Risk-free Pension Schemes in the European Union - Macroeconomic Benefits, the Mobile Working Citizen's Perspective and Why Nots

    Variations between the diverse pension systems in the member states of the European Union hamper labour market mobility, across country borders but also within the countries of the European Union. From a macroeconomic perspective, and in the light of demographic pressure, this paper argues that allowing individual instead of collective pension building would greatly improve labour market flexibility and thus enhance the functioning of the monetary union. I argue that working citizens would benefit, for three reasons, from pension saving in a risk-free savings account. First, citizens would have a clear picture of the accumulation of their own pension savings throughout their working life. Second, they would pay hardly any extra costs and, third, once retired they would not be subject to the whims of government or other pension fund managers. This paper investigates the feasibility of individual pension building under various parameter settings by calculating the pension saved during a working life and the pension dis-saved after retirement. The findings show that there are no reasons why the European Union and individual member states should not allow individual risk-free pension savings accounts. This would have macroeconomic benefits and provide a solid pension provision that can enhance mobility, instead of engaging workers in different mandatory collective pension schemes that exist around in the European Union

    Stochastic Geometric Modeling & Analysis of Non-Uniform Two-tier Networks: A Stienen’s Model Base Approach

    While stochastic geometric models based on Poisson point processes (PPP) provide a tractable approach for the analysis of uniform two-tier network deployments, the performance evaluation of a non-uniform deployment remains an open issue which we address in this paper. This is due to the fact that smaller cells can be more efficiently deployed in areas where the QoS of traditional macro base stations is poor. Therefore, in this paper we introduce Stienen’s model which allows us to analyse such non-uniform deployment. In contrast to traditional PPP based analysis, performance characterization under Stienen Model are more challenging due to location and density dependencies. However, we demonstrate that the performance can be approximated in a tractable manner. The developed statistical framework is employed to characterize the gains in terms of energy efficiency (EE) for non-uniform deployments. Results show an achievable 19% to 124% improvements in the macrocell coverage as compared to a uniform deployment, while the femtocell coverage and system EE are of the same order of magnitude for both deployments. These results are complemented with the fact that OPEX and CAPEX are reduced due to a lesser number of FAPs deployed

    Why do families of sick newborns accept hospital care? a community-based cohort study in Karachi, Pakistan

    Objective: Sick young infants are at high risk of mortality in developing countries, but families often decline hospital referral. Our objective was to identify the predictors of acceptance of referral for hospital care among families of severely ill newborns and infants Karachi, Pakistan. Study Design: A cohort of 541 newborns and infants referred from home by community health workers conducting household surveillance, and diagnosed with a serious illness at local community clinics between 1 January and 31 December 2007, was followed-up within 1 month of referral to the public hospital. Result: Only 24% of families accepted hospital referral. Major reasons for refusal were financial difficulties (67%) and father/elder denying permission (65%). Religious/cultural beliefs were cited by 20% of families. Referral acceptance was higher with recognition of severity of the illness by mother (odds ratio = 12.7, 95% confidence interval = 4.6 to 35.2), family\u27s ability to speak the dominant language at hospital (odds ratio = 2.0, 95% confidence interval = 1.3-3.1), presence of grunting in the infant (odds ratio = 3.3, 95% confidence interval = 1.2-9.0) and infant temperature Conclusion: Refusal of hospital referral for sick young infants is very common. Interventions that encourage appropriate care seeking, as well as community-based management of young infant illnesses when referral is not feasible are needed to improve neonatal survival in low-income countries
