Role of Electrotonic Coupling in the Olivocerebellar System
The level of electrotonic coupling in the inferior
olive is higher than in any other brain region. Connexin36 is the
main protein that forms the olivary gap junctions. Yet, the functional
role of electrotonic coupling in the cerebellar motor control remains
to be determined. In this thesis mice that lack coupling among their
olivary neurons were subjected to classical eyeblink conditioning.
Cx36 deficient mice showed impaired learning-dependent timing in that
they were not able to fix the timing of their conditioned responses at
the moment when the unconditioned stimulus is about to occur. The
timing of spike activities generated in the olive of coupling-
deficient mice was abnormal in that their latencies in response to the
unconditioned stimulus were inconsistent and that their overall
synchrony was reduced. Whole cell recordings of olivary neurons in
vivo showed that these different spiking activities over time result
in part from altered interaction!
s with their subthreshold oscillations. These results, combined with
analysis of olivary activities in a computer simulation of the
cerebellar system, suggest that electrotonic coupling among olivary
neurons is necessary for proper synchronous oscillations in the
inferior olive, which in turn determine the pace of the olivary
responses necessary for learning-dependent timing in cerebellar motor
control
Using a cognitive architecture to examine what develops
Different theories of development propose alternative mechanisms by which development occurs. Cognitive architectures can be used to examine the influence of each proposed mechanism of development while keeping all other mechanisms constant. An ACT-R computational model that matched adult behavior in solving a 21-block pyramid puzzle was created. The model was modified in three ways that corresponded to mechanisms of development proposed by developmental theories. The results showed that all the modifications (two of capacity and one of strategy choice) could approximate the behavior of 7-year-old children on the task. The strategy-choice modification provided the closest match on the two central measures of task behavior (time taken per layer, r = .99, and construction attempts per layer, r = .73). Modifying cognitive architectures is a fruitful way to compare and test potential developmental mechanisms, and can therefore help in specifying “what develops.
Anti-self-dual conformal structures with null Killing vectors from projective structures
Using twistor methods, we explicitly construct all local forms of
four--dimensional real analytic neutral signature anti--self--dual conformal
structures with a null conformal Killing vector. We show that is
foliated by anti-self-dual null surfaces, and the two-dimensional leaf space
inherits a natural projective structure. The twistor space of this projective
structure is the quotient of the twistor space of by the group action
induced by the conformal Killing vector.
We obtain a local classification which branches according to whether or not
the conformal Killing vector is hyper-surface orthogonal in . We give
examples of conformal classes which contain Ricci--flat metrics on compact
complex surfaces and discuss other conformal classes with no Ricci--flat

Going higher in the First-order Quantifier Alternation Hierarchy on Words
We investigate the quantifier alternation hierarchy in first-order logic on
finite words. Levels in this hierarchy are defined by counting the number of
quantifier alternations in formulas. We prove that one can decide membership of
a regular language to the levels (boolean combination of
formulas having only 1 alternation) and (formulas having only 2
alternations beginning with an existential block). Our proof works by
considering a deeper problem, called separation, which, once solved for lower
levels, allows us to solve membership for higher levels
Soliton solutions in an effective action for SU(2) Yang-Mills theory: including effects of higher-derivative term
The Skyrme-Faddeev-Niemi (SFN) model which is an O(3) model in three
dimensional space upto fourth-order in the first derivative is regarded as a
low-energy effective theory of SU(2) Yang-Mills theory. One can show from the
Wilsonian renormalization group argument that the effective action of
Yang-Mills theory recovers the SFN in the infrared region. However, the thoery
contains an additional fourth-order term which destabilizes the soliton
solution. In this paper, we derive the second derivative term perturbatively
and show that the SFN model with the second derivative term possesses soliton

Statistical Model for the Nucleon Structure Functions
A phenomenological model for the nucleon structure functions is presented.
Visualising the nucleon as a cavity filled with parton gas in equilibrium and
parametrizing the effects due to the finiteness of the nucleon volume, we
obtain a good fit to the data on the structure function . The model then

The effect of the dynamical state of clusters on gas expulsion and infant mortality
The star formation efficiency (SFE) of a star cluster is thought to be the
critical factor in determining if the cluster can survive for a significant
(>50 Myr) time. There is an often quoted critical SFE of ~30 per cent for a
cluster to survive gas expulsion. I reiterate that the SFE is not the critical
factor, rather it is the dynamical state of the stars (as measured by their
virial ratio) immediately before gas expulsion that is the critical factor. If
the stars in a star cluster are born in an even slightly cold dynamical state

Purity of Gaussian states: measurement schemes and time-evolution in noisy channels
We present a systematic study of the purity for Gaussian states of
single-mode continuous variable systems. We prove the connection of purity to
observable quantities for these states, and show that the joint measurement of
two conjugate quadratures is necessary and sufficient to determine the purity
at any time. The statistical reliability and the range of applicability of the
proposed measurement scheme is tested by means of Monte Carlo simulated
experiments. We then consider the dynamics of purity in noisy channels. We
derive an evolution equation for the purity of general Gaussian states both in
thermal and squeezed thermal baths. We show that purity is maximized at any
given time for an initial coherent state evolving in a thermal bath, or for an
initial squeezed state evolving in a squeezed thermal bath whose asymptotic
